I was listening to an AT40 from 1998 with a Natalie Merchant song and was thinking back to how, in 1995-96, Natalie Merchant had a couple really big radio hits - three top 10s. But I couldn’t think of her music appealing to people under 25 (except I was 12 at the time and had her CD lol). It took me a few seconds to realize that back then, pop radio probably had a wider range of listeners, so it likely wasn’t just youth, and that’s how those AC-leaning lighter pop hits were able to do as well as they did. It was the norm rather than the exception. |

Dirty Heads featuring Train were on the Sunday published chart with "Vacation". Train front man Pat Monahan is 52.
Sir Elton John is back on the pop chart, this week, for the first time since 1998 with his duet with Dua Lipa, "Cold Heart". He's 74.

Radio use to play anything popular no matter the genre...I recently heard an old at40 show from 1984...that played everyone from Kenny Rodgers to Def Leppard to Madonna to The Stray Cats... it seems to be getting better but I wish Radio would get back to that kind of Variety

Radio stations have very limited playlists now and insist that this is what the listeners want to hear. It's been that way so long that most people (not counting us) don't remember anything else. |

Updated ages/songs on page 4 for Pitbull, Kanye  , Buckland, Champion, Bootsy, Barker, Fallon and Elton. Also added Walker Hayes who was 40 when "Fancy Like" charted. I also put a footnote at the bottom for the late Loleatta Holloway (already on the list for "Good Vibrations"), who was sampled in Wizkid's "Essence." She would have been 75. |
