Doesn't the Year-End Hot 100 Chart also use a reverse chart point system (#1 song gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points and the #100 song gets 1 point) for the songs' Hot 100 respective chart runs? So, regardless of how well a song does in one, two, all or a combination of 3 major Hot 100 components (Airplay, Sales and Streaming), that was already factored in the computation and determination of the weekly Hot 100 Chart placement and it no longer has the "extra" bearing on the Year-End Hot 100 Chart, right? Billboard adds up a song's chart points each week to determine its' year-end placement. The chart points are determined by a formula that BB has developed that gives different weightings for sales, airplay and streaming. The method you outlined was used by BB until the late 1980s.

"To My Readers: Cher’s “Woman’s World” didn’t make it this week. It sold 26K digital copies to enter Hot Digital Songs at #79. I thought that might be enough to do it. Alas, no." To my readers = "Hi a fan here who lives in his own world of Cher" (I don't think people really expected it to chart) #125 this week

I think they give a lot of extra points for top ten weeks. f**k new pageEdit #2: Also look at "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark". It's at #13 after 20 weeks. It will go down like most of their singles - relatively low peak and crazy longevity. I feel like this will fall after ~35 weeks.

There are 21 more weeks in the 2013 chart year, so "My Songs Know..." could end up with 41 weeks counting towards the year-end countdown. That would give it a shot at ending up in the year-end Top 20. Not bad for a song that at times seemed like it was stalling at TOP40.

Didn't Billboard use an inverse-point system when the chart methodology changes during the year?

Didn't Billboard use an inverse-point system when the chart methodology changes during the year? The 1990 and 1991 year-end Hot 100 charts were compiled via an inverse-point system. One of the (few) advantages of reaching a certain age, is that I can answer such questions, since I was an avid BB reader in the 80s and 90s. In 1990 and 1991 BB used the following method for its' year-end calculations: - for each chart position they arrived at an average # of points based on the actual points songs at that position achieved during the chart year (late November to late November). This was a significant change to the previous methodology which assigned a fixed # of points for each position and gave bonus points for additional weeks #1 (perhaps also top 5, and top 10, not sure). Also the chart year was very different. If a song was ascending the HOT 100 at the end of one chart year, all of its' points would be assigned to the next chart year. But if it was descending, BB would do an estimate of the points it would accumulate for the rest of its' chart life (the 1987 and 1986 year-end editions are on the Billboard.biz website if you want to read BB's explanation). Since the introduction of soundscan and BDS starting with the 1992 chart year, the methodology has been consistent. The actual # of chart points are added up for each week a song is on the HOT 100. Change in methodology does not matter.

I thought there was a recent year when, because of methodology changes, BB didn't just add up all of the chart points tracks had each week. Hmmph.
I never heard of that past methodology (i.e. climbing at end of a chart year, and all point going toward the next year; I know Fred Bronson did something similar in his Hottest book, i.e. if a track peaked in the following year, its full run wet toward the peak year). Thanks for the info. :)

I have Fred Bronson's book. It is a fun read although I don't totally agree with his methodology. To my mind it gives too much weighting to the top 5. Like some people on Pulse, I do my own in-house calculation of the HOT100 year-end. I award 250,000 points to the #1 song with positions 2-100 being awarded points based on a ratio, so that the #10 song is 1/2 as popular as the #1 song, the #19 song is 1/3rd as popular, down to #100 which is 1/12th as popular as #1. I also award bonus points based on additional weeks at #1. My chart year is based on the survey week period (similar to Soundscan).
I have combed the BB archives and have found the year-end issues for 1964, 1971, 1986, 1987 as well as recent years. In 1971 the chart year was not even 52 weeks!

I Knew You Were Trouble would have gone to #1 on pretty much every other Billboard chart methodology prior to the streaming changes. It sold almost 600,000 copies one week and was not #1. It is a bigger hit in the US than LoveStory in my opinion. I barely remember LoveStory, even tho I think it's a great song. I also think IKYWT got help when that girl performed it on The Voice, I know people who don't listen to TS that like that song. Agreed. IKYWT would've been #1, and it had multiple mega weeks that Love Story or You Belong With Me didn't have. YBWM and LS just had more longevity, but in terms of impact, IKYWT definitely could be one of her biggest hits.

Bronson's methodology did improve from what it was, but, yeah, still probably too much weighting.
In terms of all-time charts, think Billboard's weighting of pre-BS/-SS eras has been the best yet.
