On "Blurred Lines": "He has the Today Show, America Got Talent, The View, & Jimmy Fallon all next week." We are doomed. This will finish with 10 weeks of selling above 300k. oh my..hes DEF. goin' for some record breaking action full force! lol. Between the sales increases will also come more radio requests. Timing is a little too coincidental (and a very wise man)! ;) it's not coincidental. His album is released next week.

Why is We Can't Stop not doing as well in radio compared to Heart Attack and Come & Get It. Those had really fast climbs in terms of radio airplay. Idk how much this has an impact but Miley is also on a different label then Selena and Demi now, HWR pushes Demi and especially Selena like crazy, while Miley is on a label with a bunch of superstars now.

Hollywood Records doesn't do s**t though. They do for Selena and had z100 adding both songs the day they came out.

It's far less of a radio friendly song that "Heart Attack" and "Come & Get It." However, it's continuing to get decent updates and its callout scores continue to increase. The song should be a lock for top 20 in airplay. How is "We Can't Stop" far less radio friendly? The song is straight up made for top 40 radio.. It's basically a Rihanna song molded for Miley. That's why. Miley Cyrus isn't a beloved pop diva anyway. Give her a song like "We Can't Stop" and, well, you don't exactly get a hater-proof song. This is Miley Cyrus, a Disney starlet, singing about partying and strip clubs, not Rihanna doing the same.

Hollywood Records doesn't do s**t though. While Hollywood records isn't great , they are pretty good about pushing lead singles and sometimes the second single. Getting a third single from them is wear its gets hard

The "Disney Starlet" thing is long gone She still has that Disney brand tacked onto her whether she's still a part of it or not. There will be plenty of people who dislike her because of that and several who think she should always remain a perfect role model because of it. She still has yet to fully get rid of that brand like Britney, Christina, and Justin did.

"We Can't Stop" is basically known among many casual listeners as "Hannah Montana's new song." Hannah Montana was so huge that Miley is having (and will continue to have) a MUCH harder time dropping the Disney image than both Selena and Demi. Twitter, Facebook, tumblr, reddit, etc. all were blowing up with "what happened to Hannah Montana?" comments.

The weird thing is that people are buying We Can't Stop, it will probably outsell both Heart Attack and CAGI, despite lacking the radio success I still think a big problem with WCS is having is the lack of support from the big stations like z100. Hwr had z100 adding and putting in rotation both Selena and Demi's singles. Z100 is barely touching We Can't Stop.

Hanna Montana was a far bigger persona/character than any other female Disney-show character, so no surprise that the HM moniker would continue to follow her.
"We Can't Stop" is No. 20 on Z-100's rolling chart, so play is picking up there.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-july-21-2013-songs-dancing-miley-201711611.html#more-5604Week Ending July 21, 2013. Songs: Dancing With MileyBy Paul Grein | Chart Watch Miley Cyrus’ rather risqué “We Can’t Stop” moves up from #3 to #2 on the Hot 100, matching the peak position of her wholesome 2009 smash “Party In The U.S.A.” As was the case in 2009, a monster hit is blocking Cyrus’ ascendancy to #1. Then it was the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” which was in the midst of a 14-week run at #1 when Cyrus’ hit spent its first two weeks at #2. Now, it’s “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell, which this week logs its seventh week at #1. This is the fifth week in the top five for “We Can’t Stop.” “Party In The U.S.A.” logged 11 weeks in the top five. There had been some debate about whether Cyrus was singing “Dancing with Molly” (a slang term for ecstasy) or “Dancing with Miley.” Cyrus revealed this past week that she is indeed singing “Dancing with Molly.” (I think she should have left it open to interpretation. I guess she thinks a drug reference makes her look cool or “all-grown-up.” I’ll cut her some slack because, thanks to her Hannah Montana past, she had a particular need to prove the latter point.) “We Can’t Stop” logs its fourth straight week at #2 on Hot Digital Songs. It has sold 1,311,000 copies to date. As noted, “Blurred Lines” tops the Hot 100 for the seventh week. That’s the longest run by any song since Maroon 5’s “One More Night” logged nine weeks on top last fall. “Blurred Lines” received 197.7 million all-format “audience impressions” this week, according to Nielsen BDS. That’s the second-highest weekly audience total since this measurement began in December 1990. It trails only Mariah Carey’s comeback hit “We Belong Together,” which rang up 212.2 million “audience impressions” in the week ending July 9, 2005. Will “Blurred Lines” topple Carey’s record next week? Stay tuned. “Blurred Lines” sold 340K digital copies this week. This is its seventh week with sales of more than 300K. Only two other songs in digital history have topped 300K in weekly sales seven or more times: “We Are Young” by fun. featuring Janelle Monae (seven weeks) and the aforementioned “Thrift Shop” (nine weeks). Will “Blurred Lines” equal or surpass the record set less than five months ago by “Thrift Shop”? Stay tuned. “Blurred Lines” notches its seventh week at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Thicke’s personal best on the R&B chart is 11 weeks at #1 in 2007 with “Lost Without U.” Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” rebounds from #4 to #3 in its—get this—47th week on the chart. The song first reached #3 the week ending June 23. It’s #1 on Rock Songs for the 18th week. Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (which also features Pharrell Williams) drops from #2 to #4. It’s #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs for a 10th week. The song tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the 16th song to sell 2 million or more copies in 2013. Bruno Mars lands his 10th top five hit as “Treasure” jumps from #8 to #5. Though I’m a big Mars fan, I thought this one was a little slight when I first heard it. Its charms have worn down my resistance. “Treasure” echoes such pop/soul/dance hits of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s as Heatwave’s “The Groove Line” and DeBarge’s “Rhythm Of The Night.” “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly dips from #6 to #7. The song is #1 on Hot Country Songs for the 21st week, which puts it in a four-way tie for the longest run at #1 in the chart’s history. The other songs to log 21 weeks on top are Eddy Arnold’s “I’ll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms” (1947), Hank Snow’s “I’m Moving On” (1950) and Webb Pierce’s “In The Jailhouse Now” (1955). “Holy Grail” by Jay Z featuring Justin Timberlake holds at #8 for the second week. As you probably know, seven Jay Z songs entered the chart last week. Billboard’s Gary Trust reports that just four other artists have ever entered the chart with seven or more songs in one week. Eleven songs by David Cook debuted on June 7, 2008, following his American Idol victory. Ten songs by Taylor Swift debuted on Nov. 13, 2010, upon the release of Speak Now. Eight songs by Lil Wayne debuted on Sept. 17, 2011, upon the release of Tha Carter IV. Seven songs by Glee Cast debuted on both Oct. 23, 2010 and April 2, 2011, when that show was at its hit-making peak. Anna Kendrick’s “Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)” moves up from #10 to #9. Kendrick has received Oscar and Tony nominations in acting categories. Billboard’s Keith Caulfield notes that only one other performer has landed a top 10 hit on the Hot 100 and received Oscar and Tony nominations in acting categories. That’s entertainment legend Barbra Streisand. Four of Streisand’s 12 top 10 hits are from movies in which she starred. Kendrick’s song, too, is from a movie in which she starred. Streisand was last in the top 10 in January 1997—when Kendrick was 11. Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” dips from #9 to #10. This is its 15th week in the top 10, which enables it to surpass Timberlake’s 2006 hit “My Love” (featuring T.I.) as his longest-running top 10 hit to date. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell holds at #1 for the seventh week in its 14th week on the chart. What are the odds that songs titled “Blurred Lines” and “Clarity” would be in the top 15 at the same time?...Capital Cities’ “Safe And Sound” jumps from #19 to #16 in its 12th week. John Mayer’s “Wildfire” debuts at #91. That’s a nickname for Dequantes Lamar, a 23-year old Atlanta rapper…Paramore’s “Still Into You” re-enters the chart at #100. The song has climbed as high as #83. Eminem this week becomes the first male solo artist to amass three 5-million-selling digital hits. He accomplishes the feat as his 2010 smash “Not Afraid” tops the 5 million mark. It follows “Love The Way You Lie” (featuring Rihanna, 5,939,000) and “Lose Yourself” (5,555,000). Only two other artists have had three or more 5-million-selling digital hits. Katy Perry leads the pack with four. Lady Gaga has also had three. Both “Not Afraid” and “Love The Way You Lie” are from Eminem’s 2010 album Recovery. That’s one of seven albums to spawn two or more 5 million-sellers. The others are Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream (which is the only album to spawn three 5-million-sellers), the Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D., Adele’s 21, LMFAO’s Sorry For Party Rocking, Lady Gaga’s The Fame and Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops And Hooligans. Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” tops the 3 million mark this week. It’s her second 3-million-seller. “Jar Of Hearts” is up to 3,576,000. Perri recorded “A Thousand Years” for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 1 soundtrack.

Wow at "A Thousand Years" passing 3 million. Christina Perri definitely escaped the one hit wonder tag there with that song!

A big climb for Don't Drop That Thun Thun! Every week I think UOENO has peaked, but it just keeps climbing more and more. Same Love needs to go top 10. It keeps missing out. :(

Re: Miley. Avid watchers of the Disney channel would beg to differ. They would say she used to be Hannah Montana and liked her old stuff but no longer think of her that way and may not even like her anymore because they no longer see her on a Disney show.

But we're not talking about avid watchers of Disney Channel here. Avid Disney Channel watchers don't control the charts we're talking about. We're talking about, you better sit down because I'm about to use your favorite term, the general public. Collectively, people still think of Miley as little ol' Hannah Montana. Just read the comments on "We Can't Stop"'s music video. If you don't find HM mentioned within the first 50 comments, I will agree to say that I was wrong.

Actually they do control the charts. The reason Miley Cyrus sold a bazillion CDs in the first place was because of the people that saw her on the Disney Channel But we're not talking about sales for an album. We're talking about airplay for a single. Let's put it this way, I would say that the original fans of Hannah Montana, no longer think of Miley Cyrus as that persona. But I'm not talking about fans. I'm talking about just the common person who knew of Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus as the new "it" girl from Disney. According to them, Miley was supposed to be this amazing role model for their children (because apparently parents can't teach their children right from wrong, a celebrity has to do so, but that's a different argument) or a role model for themselves, but now she's singing about partying with drugs, alcohol, and risqué dancing. The original fans are the ones who purchased the music and control the charts. Since her image has changed, it is likely that she has new fans but the ones that say Miley = the Disney starlet named Hannah are fewer in number. They only controlled album sales and pretty much first week single sales. If they controlled everything, Meet Miley Cyrus would have had more than one hit, Breakout would have had more than "7 Things" barely getting much airplay, and Can't Be Tamed wouldn't have bombed. And again, I'm not talking about fans that say Miley = role model Hannah, because, to be honest, people who think that now probably aren't current fans. I'm talking about the general public. I don't understand why this is such a strange concept to grasp ahold of. We already ran into this EXACT same problem with "Can't Be Tamed"'s music video. And it's not like I'm saying she's completely doomed of ever having a hit as a mature artist, because obviously "We Can't Stop" is performing better than "Can't Be Tamed," so more and more people are starting to accept the fact that Miley is growing up, but there's still a LARGE amount of people holding back from it. Radio is very conservative in selecting what to play. They don't really want to play something that's causing a large amount of controversy or turn listeners off.

All I can say is I deleted my post
Take these as opinions only -
- people who post in the "Can't Be Tamed Thread" are not the general public - I don't know what the "General Public" is but I am sure it is not anyone else here either or your friends. - Any further comments I might have would circle back to 'general public' and the discussion would get circular in a hurry so I will close the loop now and stop here

My guess for why Miley's airplay is lagging is that she's been away for a little while and radically changed her look/persona. Radio is always very conservative and probably was not sure if people would still be into her. Perhaps they will catch up soon.
Also, re: Thicke vs Mariah. This is super nerdy, but Robin Thicke has a slight advantage due to the US's population growth -- there's simply more people here to listen to radio, thus more room for higher audience impressions. There were about 295m people in the US in 2005, and about 315m today. So, "adjusted for inflation," Mariah's total would be 226.6m if the same proportion of the country were listening to her song today. :) You could really apply this concept to any number of records though, and no one ever does, so take it with a grain of salt. (Also, in case it sounds like I'm a Mariah stan, I am far from it -- personally I feel like Blurred Lines is more of a pop culture phenomenon so I'd be happy if it surpassed WBT.)

I know the Mediabase panel changes all the time, so much that it's become somewhat of a joke. But over the years, has the BDS panel?

Do we think Radioactive will become the longest running Hot 100 hit ever?
I do. Because a) the next single hasn't done anything yet and b ) the album is still a steady seller and indicates that there are loads of people who don't know about ID yet.

It needs 30 more weeks to break the record held by I'm Yours.
If it can hang around the top 30 until the holiday season, I think it'll make it. Older hits always get boosted sales and boosted airplay right around Christmas.
It just needs to not crash before November. The thing it has going for it is that streaming seems to keep the big hits afloat for a long time.

(Also, in case it sounds like I'm a Mariah stan, I am far from it -- personally I feel like Blurred Lines is more of a pop culture phenomenon so I'd be happy if it surpassed WBT.) Yeah but digital sales and other forms like spotify etc have become much more mainstream which offsets any potential gains in radio audience. I think most of the recent gains in radio audience is largely artificial.

Miley will not drop the Disney association while Hannah Montana reruns are still being played multiple times a day. It'll take years before she can drop it, but it's going to be incredibly hard.

At least here anyway, there is no Hannah Montana reruns
so not as hard as it appears.
Hannah programming is available if you buy the DVDs or seek it out on Netflix but not if you simply turn on your TV

I don't think Britney and Christina were immune to the Disney association either. We don't see it as strongly now because they are now a couple decades removed from being mouseketeers. I remember the same comments being tossed toward Miley now that were thrown when "Dirrty" came up. And don't get me started on the mousketeer comments that came up when Britney was going through her meltdown phase.
