I'm pretty sure if Z100's on this, KIIS is too. They're not going to pass on an opportunity like that.

I think pop music can become too formulaic at the same time as I realize not every pop song will be or needs to be innovative. To be honest, if I found the cheap and easy formula for hits I would probably reuse it too over and over again. The next 2-3 weeks will be so interesting with Katy and Gaga. Then we also have a few others coming out (Miley's second single, Eminem's cd and maybe single, Britney and Rihanna if they release this year). It will be a fun chart to watch for the Fall!

It doesn't, you're right, and Katy Perry certainly wouldn't be the one I'd peg to be a gamechanger of any kind. My comment was directed at the assumption that all of Pop music is formulaic, which isn't entirely true. The last bit was meant to reiterate that this particular song is formulaic though.

Of course it's formulaic. It's pop music. Pop music doesn't necessarily have to be formulaic. I mean, any music can find a home on Pop because it's one of the most diverse markets with a consistently evolving sound. If it was that easy, hits like 'Too Close', 'Radioactive', etc. wouldn't have happened because they weren't "planned". Just because it's catering to the pop market doesn't mean it can't show some kind of innovation. I agree with you, but he said "formulaic," not un-innovative or unimaginative. "Toxic" was formulaic and extremely innovative, arguably much more so than "Too Close" and "Radioactive" (generic alt. rock with subtle hints of the same dubstep that began springing up on Pop after "Hold It Against Me" was released).

Ah, ok see I misinterpreted your post like (I believe) you did 14887fan.'s. I still think with what he's saying though, "formulaic" works. One can deviate from the standard formula and still arrive at a hit. All he was saying was that this song sticks to a very set formula, which it does. But like I said above, that shouldn't be surprising to anyone because it's Katy Perry.

However, this is by no means a sign of any career transitioning since it's as formulaic as a math equation. Of course it's formulaic.Β It's pop music.Β Exactly, which is why formulaic does not equate to riskiness when it's the same thing being released over and over again. Riskiness in mainstream is sending something unordinary to Top 40, i.e., "Someone Like You". "Roar" is consistent with today's airplay, which is why there's no risk factor. If something's formulaic, it's safe. A title of a song doesn't justify the potential of a song. Plus, where would the discrepancy lie in determining what song is and isn't a risky release based off of the title alone? Is the song enjoyable? Sure. I don't see myself buying it, but it's a respectable effort. However, this is by no means a sign of any career transitioning since it's as formulaic as a math equation. It's supposed to be formulaic, it's Katy Perry! Why do you put her on a pedestal with the likes of Gaga in terms of progression? Unless you take her burning her blue wig SUPER seriously, lol. LMFAO as if I would ever put the likes of Katy Perry on a pedestal.

If something's formulaic, it's safe. I get where you're coming from and I'm well aware of the meaning of the word formulaic. You said it was as formulaic as a math equation. Most popular song structures are formulaic in that regard. Had you not said "like a math equation," I would've assumed you meant safe, ordinary, etc. and wouldn't have said anything.

Nice to finally have this experience!

I don't think she the Carrie fan views Perry or Gaga as progressive artists like say a Prince and yes I realize I shouldn't speak for her but I did:D even if its just what I think!

This is quickly becoming my favorite Katy song. My only complaint is that the 2nd 'you're gonna hear me' part on every chorus should have been sung in the same way as that in the final chorus.

They just wanted a nice little inoffensive song to start it out and be a guaranteed hit. There is no reason NOT to play a generic inspirational song by Katy Perry so it will definitely be huge on radio. Then, meatier second single (hopefully).

Jesus, my head is spinning with all these mixed posts. Let's get real. Katy has hammered radio and iTunes with TD era so this is going to be huge. Period. I am hooked, most songs it takes two or more listens to rope me in but Roar struck a cord with me from the start. Yes Katy is one of my favorite artists but I find Roar to be catchy as hell and the last verse and ending just blows it out of the park. I know this will go # 1 so how many will she have now? Looking forward for the remixes too. Roar is stuck in my head. Can't shake it and frankly I don't want too. Thanks again Katy for delivering another anthem.

Personally not impressed on first listen, but maybe it will grow. It's not bad but it's nothing substantial to me, personally.

Chorus is a definite earworm on this. I still forget how the verses go though, even after listening dozens of times now. Weak verse-strong chorus syndrome strikes again.

I like it! Yes, it's safe and not very different from her previous material, but I understand that after so many hits it's hard to change your sound dramatically.
