It also depends on viewership of the VMA's. Last year's show had a 50% decline in the ratings, so that's not a guarantee by any means. I don't say the decline was because of her absence, but I'm sure we'll see an increase this year. Plus I think being on a Thursday definitely hurt it. Plus no Britney (not that she's performed for a few years now), Gaga, Beyonce, Katy, etc. Everyone typical was gone.

WBT had a single week where an American Idol single ranked No. 1. Not sure about others.

I really hate the edit function.
"Dilemma" was another song that was interrupted, also by an American Idol winner. "Moments Like This" by Kelly Clarkson.

What were MTV thinking when they put their awards on a Thursday??? This year will surely increase its rating.

But she didn't perform. No one's going to watch just to see her sit there, they're going to watch to see her perform.

But she didn't perform. No one's going to watch just to see her sit there, they're going to watch to see her perform. She was in the commercials, and I wouldn't classify her as a performer that people actively tune in for.

The show has not been hindered on Thursday in the past. All of these shows were on a Thursday:
1994 1995 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2006
When the show went to Sundays in 2004 and 2005, ratings were down.

Awful. 2004 was the first year it aired on Sunday, where it's been ever since other than last year and 2006. As Button just stated, it's aired multiple times on Thursdays before. BUT, last year they moved it to the night where President Obama gave his speech at the DNC. Oopsie.

When the show went to Sundays in 2004 and 2005, ratings were down. Doesn't that prove my point, though? When it moves, ratings drop. It doesn't matter when it moves to, but the year it moves, it's likely to confuse people, giving lower ratings. That's not just the VMAs either. It's a usual occurance that when a show moves out of a timeslot it's been in for a while, it's ratings slip until it builds back it's "normalcy" by staying in a time slot for a while.

Regardless of where the ratings land, the show usually has a pretty big impact on digital sales.

Hey guys, do you know which version of "Cruise" has sold the most and how much? :) I suppose the original version was surpassed already.

But she didn't perform. No one's going to watch just to see her sit there, they're going to watch to see her perform. Yeah, there's probably a few hundred thousand people who'd tune in to specifically see Katy, etc, but there's also a few hundred thousand people who would tune in to see their favourite rock group or favourite country star perform. It's not only female pop stars that people care about. Whoever performs each year will be drawing in viewers imo.

Katy Perry - Part of Me was debuted @ #1 and Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) reclaimed the #1 spot the next week. Same with Whistle and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, S&M and E.T., Someone Like You and Moves Like Jagger, OMG and Not Afraid, Whatcha Say and Fireflies, etc. Each single week breaking up a streak was because of a sales boost.

This time I wouldn't be surprised to see Katy #1 (in her 2nd week, after airplay-only debut), then Gaga, then either of them, due to VMAs. At that point it depends on the performances and songs. Also, if "Blurred Lines" stays off iTunes lol...

it's really exciting to see a song like this break all these records. Blurred Lines ascent to the top of radio is spectacular. I still can't believe it's getting +2.5 million updates at this level.

So next week Robin will have the #1 album on billboard and he will be #1 on: airplay sales pop hot ac urban urban ac rhythmic OMG...this is a crazy mega hit. Was we belong together the last song to achieve this
I hope they let this song die out and push Give it to me in September (it seems like the only song on the album that can be a hit that follows up this smash...then songs like ooh la la or top of the world or something else can follow it. he needs two solid hits in a row and then the 3rd single can benefit off of that.
