that's why a Wednesday premiere (with the intent to debut at #1 or at least high) is best. Not Monday. 7 days of sales, 7 days of video/streaming, no clear channel deal (but still a full week of airplay) vs. 5 days of sales, 5 days of video/streaming, clear channel deal (and 6 regular days) ... Monday definitely looks better.

If so, Wednesday would yield: 7 days of airplay 7 days of streaming 5 days of sales compared to Monday's: 5 days of airplay 5 days of streaming 7 days of sales assuming it doesn't debut because of airplay those first 2 days.

All this speculation about whether Katy or Ga are going to hit #1 and we haven't even heard either the song. I remember when there was so much speculation when Kelly Clarkson was releasing NA - that it was a certain #1 because she was coming off such a huge era, etc. Once people heard the song, even with the heavily weighted digital sales component at the same, the public didn't buy it. I hope both songs deliver. After that, I'll root for one or both to chart well.

1. ROBIN THICKE β Blurred Lines f/Pharrell & T.I: 270.243 (+ 0.555) YASSS, peaking soon! It has done its job, only the huge AC gain kept it positive. It should start to decrease in three days and will hopefully fall faster after its AC peak.
JAY Z β Holy Grail f/Justin Timberlake: 60.490 (+ 2.019) Radio finally realized which "Justin song" deserves the big gains.
4. MAROON 5 β Love Somebody: 145.675 (+ 1.399) This should peak #2 on Airplay. They need to perform this somewhere, because it's not selling that well and going nowhere on the third component.

Adonis, it's not a "controversial" rule- I don't see much analyzing and discussion outside of fan forums. A No. 1 debut isn't that big a deal; it is if a track hits the mark in the long run. And if a track is going to get significant airplay outside of an airplay promo, the first day or two shouldn't make much of a difference. SPRΞΞ- that would be ideal, but if a single is released Monday, what's going to stop radio from playing it then? If it's released on Wednesday to digital outlets, then it's losing two days of sales for the debut. However you look at it, one component or another isn't going to match up. And the airplay period is Wed-Tues. because BDS supplies up-the-minute audience information that can be used for the chart, whereas sales data takes longer to process. EDIT: I didn't read this page, where there was further discussion on the matter. :)

I think today will be BL's peak.
270.243M is going to be hard to beat. I bet it will be another 10 years before it happens.

Last week, "Blurred Lines" was at 256.048m in Mediabase numbers; so, that's a gain of 14.195m. The BDS tally was roughly 81% of the Mediabase tally last week; if similar patterns occur for this week, the BDS tally may be i nthe neighborhood of 217-219 million.

Couldn't be any longer than BDS that is also digital could it?

^Apparently, it is- otherwise the periods would match up. SoundScan sales info isn't available until at least Tuesday evening (Billboard sometimes notable numbers at that point); BDS info for all of Tuesday is pretty readily available for Wednesday.

Sometimes record companies report digital sales as early as Monday when it's a large debut.

Plus, that Kelly example is the complete oddity and not one to use in defence of the likelihood of something happening or not.

Billboard.com
Over on the Digital Songs chart, Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (featuring Pharrell and T.I.) regains the No. 1 slot, after being temporarily dethroned by One Direction's "Best Song Ever" last week. "Blurred" sells another 405,000 downloads (up 30%), rising 2-1 on the chart. It's now the only song to have ever sold at least 400,000 downloads in four different weeks. (One Direction's "Best Song Ever," meanwhile, tumbles 1-12 on the chart with 91,000, down 72%).β¨β¨
"Blurred Lines" also overtakes Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" to become the second-biggest-selling song of the year. "Blurred" has shifted 4.3 million, while "Radioactive" stands at 4.1 million. Ahead of both is the year's biggest seller, "Thrift Shop," by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (featuring Wanz), with 5.8 million.β¨β¨
Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" rises 3-2 with 173,000 (down 9%) while Jay Z's "Holy Grail" (featuring Justin Timberlake) ascends 4-3 with 162,000 (up 2%).β¨β¨
Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" moves 5-4 (155,000; down 3%), Anna Kendrick's "Cups" jumps 11-5 (110,000; up 8%), and Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" steps 7-6 (108,000; down 10%).β¨β¨
Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," featuring Pharrell Williams, moves 8-7 (103,000; down 9%), and Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound" zips into the top 10 with a 12-8 rise (nearly 103,000; up 1%). Avicii's red-hot "Wake Me Up!" flies 32-9 with 100,000 (up a whopping 88%) while Macklemore and Lewis' "Same Love" is steady at No. 10 with 97,000 (down 7%).β¨β¨
Digital track sales this past week totaled 22.8 million downloads, down 2% compared with last week (23.2 million) and down 6% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (24.1 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 798.1 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (821.4 million).β¨β¨

Wow at "Cups" and "Wake Me Up!." Great to see "Safe and Sound" in the top ten in digital sales now!
"Best Song Ever," though...

The digital sales for a single are an estimate, though, no? In any event, that's the reason Billboard has given for using the different tracking periods, so we gotsa accept it.

So next week "Blurred Lines" may sell 300-350k at least. Then the following week another 300k?
Things don't look easy for "Roar" to reach #1 on the Hot 100.

Ugh, the digital songs top10 is so boring right now. Only 13,000 downloads separating #5 from $10, and the #5 song sold only 110,000 downloads, which is pretty low. The appropriately named "Wake Me Up!" has an outside chance of going to #1, if overseas success is any indication (it is #2 on the Global Track Chart behind the ubiquitous "Blurred Lines").

The digital sales for a single are an estimate, though, no? I don't think so. It just takes a while for all of that data to be compiled correctly, whereas airplay is much faster to compile.

Why is that though? Isn't sales data all computerized. Why does it take so much time to compile it.
