I am so glad for Lorde -- always thrills me to see someone sneak out of nowhere to outperform the "establishment" acts who have had well-oiled corporate machinery behind them for years. (Which is not to say Lorde doesn't have a label working her, it's just that she doesn't have the advantage of name recognition and history.) I think the advantage of novelty (in terms of new artist) is equally as beneficial because they are coming out with a clean slate that people can latch on to and labels can promote without having to compete with past image.

"Friday" was a real song- just not a good one. Some may have liked it, though.

'The Fox' may not win a grammy for best song of the year but it is fun. That is what novelty songs are supposed to be

2m, surely you're not using the Grammys as a measure of greatness? And, yes, "The Fox" is fun and goofy.

2m, surely you're not using the Grammys as a measure of greatness? Of course... just ask the Big 4 legend, Christopher Cross.

Yes Christopher Cross was great
A Grammy says you had a good year. What it doesn't do though is predict the future. Not everyone can have 30 years in the spotlight

Well, it looks like it's time for my hot 100 questions! -Is "Royals" staying at #1 for next week, or does another song have a shot at dethroning it? -Will "The Fox" enter the top 5 next week? -Can "Dark Horse" and/or "Walking On Air" go top 10 next week? -Will "Baby Blue" re-enter the Hot 100? -Will "Work Bitch" go top 10 next week?

Being unknown is never an advantage on the charts. Ask the 99.9999% of musicians who will never spend a single week on the Hot 100.

Does anyone know what the highest re-entries ever are? Wiki has a list of highest jumps within the Hot 100, and #1 debuts. 23 seems very impressive re-entering at #11, which seems bigger than, say, an 80something spot jump, but I can't find a list anywhere. Off the top of my head, I'm guessing I Will Always Love You and Forget You are likely high on that list. I think Control Myself (LL Cool J/Jennifer Lopez) holds that honor, re-entering at #4 in 2006.

So, which song will last longer -- Radioactive or Sail?
I would've bet on Radioactive a few months ago but Sail is just chugging along endlessly it seems. I kinda like the song but would never have guessed it would appeal so broadly.

I loved Control Myself. Also Lose Control by Missy Elliott/Ciara was quite similar, and Ayo Technology too. I loved all those electro/techno songs from the mid-00s.

Given that Take Back The Night never went above Mirrors in its whole chart run, does anyone know any other instances where a follow up singe was below its predecessor during its entire run on the charts?
Katy's Thinking Of You comes to mind, as well as Rihanna's Right Now.
