3. How does BDS/Billboard even know about all user-generated videos that use a song? There are so many out there! Does someone have to submit specific videos? Did Beyonce's camp make BDS aware of the "GMB" one? 4. I would assume there are copyright issues as most of these user-generated videos don't even have permission to use the songs. Does BDS clear things with an artist before counting the stream? This article should give you a decent idea about these two. Great, thanks!

Any word on the current percentage of what streaming will be worth now then? The way that BB explained it in the "Over The Counter" column, was that in the last several weeks of the 2013 chart year, streaming was at or above the target range (25%-30% I believe). BB tweaked the weighting so that streaming would once again fall into the targeted range. One reason for the increased streaming #s was the addition of new services (not sure what streaming services were added).

I wonder if streaming being worth less will knock Sail out of the top 50 on the hot 100. With almost no points from airplay (less than 10 AI) and digital not being outstanding (#47 on iTunes) this song has been relying on streaming to keep it alive

So, Vevo views are those on vevo.com, and not the Vevo channel that one finds on YouTube, I gather?

I've yet to see the Wrecking Ball video. Am I missing anything? No, it's just some dude lip syncing and acting out parts of the Wrecking Ball video on Chatroulette, with a split screen of people's reactions, for two and a half minutes or so.

"Louie Louie" being kept out of the #1 spot by "Dominque" has to be one of the greatest "you gotta be kidding me" moments in the HOT 100's history. Scanning the top 10 from 1968 and 1973, I counted 8 songs from each year on my IPod. I am surprised there were so many from 1973. I don't consider that a great year in pop music (and the next two years were even worse).

The "Dominique"/"Louie Louie" situation is a perfect example of the idea that the song that makes it to #1 is not always the song that is remembered as well long term. Today, "Dominique," as well as The Singing Nun, are basically considered a one hit wonder, while "Louie Louie" has enjoyed a long life as a frat boy classic; and the Kingsmen are widely considered pioneers in that musical genre that is often called garage band rock.

There are just WAY too many #2s to even begin that were blocked by some of the most forgotten dated/fluke songs ever LOL. Madonna is a prime example of someone who had some of her most iconic hits stall at #2. First one that comes to mind is Express Yourself which was blocked by 'Martika' lol :#. Toy Soldiers wasnt a 'bad' song but rarely gets recurrent airplay, is seriously dated and she essentially became a one hit wonder (though barely hit the top 10 in 1991 one other time). Still, you can't compare TS to the legendary Express Yourself or even Material Girl (another #2 peaking song which Im sure MOST of the public who doesnt follow charts thinks is a #1 song). I was just giving one example but there are other endless #2s and even lower that were positively #1 worthy.

I don't consider that a great year in pop music (and the next two years were even worse). I agree. 1973 was a pretty sh*t/lost year as it was in that 'transaction period' between the late 60s sound and true 70s sound starting. '73 was right before disco/funk really kicked in so you had this odd mix of late 60s sounding folk sounding songs and dated rock songs mixed in w/ weak, lightweight 'trying to be disco/funk' songs which lacked the bass and slick/stronger production that songs had just a few years later. Back on topic..I'm really hoping we get some word from Billboard or a tweet from one of their main people hinting whether or not theres going to be a shocker this week on the Hot 100. Obviously, if they did that, the surprise would be over and most people would figure it out. Yet, there's a way they could make their point in the form of a question re: Mileys streams (to create suspense and traffic to the site). I would think if we don't hear 'anything' by the end of today (as it would def. be very noteworthy) than The Monster is prob. getting #1 this week as they strongly hinted last week would happen.

Martika's song was blowing up at the time, while Madonna's was a second single from a big-selling album (meaning not as many people were buying the single). Same with "Material Girl". "Thriller" was a huge song that now seems like a number one, but it makes sense in the context of 1984 that the seventh single from the biggest selling album ever wouldn't race to the top. The fact that people like Madonna and MJ could land top 5 hits at all several singles deep into an album cycle (multiple times!) is a testament to their star power and the quality of their work.

RE 1983- "Take a Chance on Me" is Abba. "Take a Chance" was the duet with John Travolta, that wasn't listed on the Hot 100 (it reached No. 3 on AC, though).

You are correct - it was never listed as a "Double A" single. I've noticed some "credit" discrepancies on these lists. (Like Stevie Nicks being credited for "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'." She was never received credit on the single (just KENNY LOGGINS in big letters), the sheet music (Recorded by "Kenny Loggins" for Columbia Records) or on the Billboard charts. She would have received credit today, but it was different back then.
