Just something I was thinking about today, but every now and again I find a poster has posted a song/artist/album that I find I really enjoy; but it always seems like these are things you stumble upon since they're sporadic and all over the place. You can find a lot in 'What Are You Listening To? (Pt. X)', but you can't really discuss in there either. I was wondering if anyone else felt the same?
The whole idea would be a subforum for posting a new artist you discovered. I think it could be formatted by song discussion, album discussion, and artist discussion (for artists that probably wouldn't get much traffic in the artist/album discussion threads, or songs that wouldn't get a lot of attention in the sub-forum for songs that aren't going for adds). That's obviously up for tweaking. This not only helps promote artists that are relatively unknown, but it could help introduce a lot of the board to a lot of new stuff. This should have been something I brought up in the summit, but w/e.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone would be interested. I don't feel like creating that forum would be difficult at all either having seen the admin layout on the test-board myself either (plus it could give new staff some jobs lol). Just something I thought was worth bringing up.

So, the Artist Showcase forum that we just got rid of due to inactivity and inaccuracy when artists once belonging there made it big? :kii:
That's the only thing that keeps me from really loving this idea, since I'm all for music discovery.

There wasn't even a convenient link for it under General Artist Discussion. Most people went there for the album sections and that's it, because that was the priority. If we made it its own subforum (like below General and above Your Opinion) and rebranded it to something that really gets the music across (Discovery Channel?) then people other than random rappers looking to drop their bedroom mixtapes might be more inclined to check it out.

I felt that the Artist Showcase section wasn't utilized in the way it was intended to be used.
I would support a section like that as I do like to discover new music and suggest something that I like that others might too.

OK, I'm down for that then (but maybe with a rule of no self-promo so we can have a reason to get rid of the spammers that will eventually plague it).

This is a great idea, I'm always looking for new music. A genre based sub forum where i can go looking for brand new artists/unknowns would be nice.

Dunno if it'll be genre based, but maybe include the genre in the title? ex thread titles: Album: Pink Strait (Folk) Artist: Bahamas (Folk) Song: Already Yours (Folk) That doesn't seem too messy, but I feel like it could get to that point.

I like that idea. What if we're already long time members. Can we post our stuff then?

OK yeah I guess I wouldn't personally care if members who are obviously not spambots did their thing.
Optional idea, but maybe a "Listen If You Like:" recommendation within the thread? i.e. Linus Young (Indie Rock)

What about pinning a thread in each General Artist Discussion forum for Rising Artists? Jokes aside, I'm all about RIYL/LIYL.

If we made it its own subforum (like below General and above Your Opinion) So are you suggesting a forum (aka, what Games, Nostalgia and Your Opinion Please are) or a sub-forum (aka, what A-J and K-Z are)? I don't think it would hurt to try making a forum and not just a sub-forum. As you implied, the reason why the Artist Showcase forum became a dumping ground for spammers and nothing more was probably because it was only a sub-forum (and therefore never stood out on the main page). If it ends up getting little to no activity, we can always delete it and move the threads over to the A-J and K-Z forums. OK yeah I guess I wouldn't personally care if members who are obviously not spambots did their thing. Ditto.

I love this idea and in fact suggested a re-branding of Artist Showcase over a year ago for this very reason. Another forum I posted at well over half a decade ago now had an "Under The Radar" section for indie/underground releases that would get buried in the General News section, and it was definitely much more active than Artist Showcase ever was. I think with proper branding (and @touch is on the right track) it could be a nice addition here indeed.

I love the idea, but it has flopped so many times before on this forum. I feel like one option might be -- instead of dividing the General Artists Discussion by letter, we could divide it by hits. For example, all artists who have had a Top 10 (or whatever) hit on the Billboard Hot 100 go in one forum, and those who haven't in another. I'd say the vast majority of artists discussed on Pulse have had a Top 10 (or at least Top 20) Hot 100 hit.
If you look at the first pages of A-J and K-Z right now, for example, that would separate out artists like Graffiti6, Disclosure, Bonnie McKee, Emeli Sande, Foxes, Elie Varner, Childish Gambino, and Sky Ferreira (pretty sure none of them have had big hits, but could be wrong). Now that's a subforum where there could be some interesting discussions!
