we were also saying that CS wouldn't reach top 2 until next week, and that SS would go back up, and that WMU would be kicked out of the top 5 this week, and had no idea that WB would be back in the top 10. This week was full of surprises. DH is still only #10 on streaming songs and #18 on radio songs and #4 on digital songs. It didn't increase by quite as much as you anticipated. you have me mixed up with someone else.

I a bit surprised that the gap is only 9% between Timber and CS. I'm guessing the latter may be able to sneak a week before DH rises to the top. OneRepublic should pull a Katy Perry and discount "Counting Stars" to 69 cents this week to increase their chances of getting that week at #1. which would be smart of them.

I am very happy for Kesha and more importantly Pitbull. Many people keeps writing him off but this man knows how to make hit singles.

Also, while the instrumentation of the two songs are similar, "Timber" is by far more mainstream-friendly: less emphasis on the folk sound, but still enough there to be engaging and interesting, and the hook on "Timber" is more instant and catchier than "Wake Me Up!." "Wake Me Up!" was still a massive hit, though. While it didn't have a big pig peak, its longevity is incredible.

I'd like to say it was ke$ha, but my favorite song of hers was Die Young and it didn't hit #1 either... so it's definitely Pitbull. IMO, I think Wake Me Up is just as radio friendly as Timber...

"Die Young" probably wouldn't have hit #1 anyways, but it was cut way back on radio before it reached its true peak.

It's not even that people think a song they buy is "best"- it's just a matter of what has the most points from all the chart factors. 'Tis all. music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-lorde-double-top-10-013301758.htmlChart Watch: Will Lorde Double Up In The Top 10?By Paul Grein - Yahoo Music Lorde is very likely to take home a few awards at the Grammys on Jan. 26. She's the front-runner to win Record and Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her breakthrough smash, "Royals." The 17-year old phenom will probably have other reasons to celebrate by month's end too—namely having two songs in the top 10 on the Hot 100. Her former #1 smash "Royals" holds at #4 this week. Her new single, "Team," jumps from #19 to #14 in its 15th week. The big news on this week's Hot 100 is the rise to #1 of "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha. I covered that, and the rest of the top 10 action, in a Chart Watch blog that we posted earlier today. If you missed it, here's a link. This blog is a look at key movers and debuts below the top 10. Beyonce's "Drunk In Love" (featuring Jay Z) rebounds from #17 to #15 in its third week. (It has climbed as high as #12.) Beyonce's other hit, "XO," jumps from #73 to #54 in its third week…The lusty "Do What U Want" by Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly rebounds from #23 to #17 in its 11th week. The song has climbed as high as #13.…Bastille's robust "Pompeii" jumps from #21 to #18 in its 21stweek. Both versions of "Let It Go" from "Frozen" move up this week. Idina Menzel's original version jumps from #32 to #27 in its sixth week. Demi Lovato's pop cover version jumps from #43 to #38 in its sixth week. The song is sure to receive an Oscar nomination next Thursday (Jan. 16). Sara Bareilles's "Brave" jumps from #36 to #30 in its 30th week. This may well top Bareilles' 2007 breakthrough smash "Love Song" for Hot 100 longevity. That song spent 41 weeks on the chart. (I didn't expect Bareilles to ever top that mark, and I bet she didn't either.)…"Show Me" by Kid Ink featuring Chris Brown jumps from #42 to #31 in its ninth week. Kid Ink's "My Own Lane" is expected to be one of next week's top new albums. Florida Georgia Line's "Stay" drops from #31 to #34 in in its 12th week. The song has climbed as high as #28. It's #1 on Hot Country Songs for the sixth straight week…American Authors' "Best Day Of My Life" jumps from #52 to #40 in its eighth week. "Talk Dirty" by Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz vaults from #85 to #49 in its third week…Darius Rucker's "Radio" jumps from #75 to #65 in its 12th week, matching its highest ranking to date. It's the first song titled "Radio" to crack the Hot 100, but we've had Queen's "Radio Ga-Ga" (#16 in 1984), Tiffany's "Radio Romance" (#35 in 1989) and R.E.M's "Radio Free Europe" (#78 in 1983). Daughtry's "Waiting For Superman" jumps from #87 to #66 in its eighth week…Frankie Ballard's "Helluva Life" jumps from #86 to #73 in its fifth week…Aloe Blacc's "The Man" re-enters the chart at #79. Blacc is featured (without a credit) on Avicii's megahit "Wake Me Up!." This is from Blacc's "Wake Me Up" EP. The Fray's "Love Don't Die" is this week's top new entry at #81. It's from the group's fourth studio album, "Helios," which is due Feb. 25…Dierks Bentley's "I Hold On" jumps from #94 to #83 in its third week… Britney Spears's "Work B**ch!" re-enters the chart at #86. The song reached #12. Spears's newer "Perfume" dips from #91 to #92 in its sixth week. The song has climbed as high as #76…"Paranoid" by Ty Dolla $ign featuring B.o.B jumps from #98 to #87 in its third week. Jerrod Niemann's "Drink To That All Night" is the week's second highest new entry at #90. It's the country artist's fifth Hot 100 hit…Bruno Mars' "Young Girls" debuts at #94. It's the fifth single from "Unorthodox Jukebox." The first three made the top five. The fourth, "Gorilla," peaked at #22...Dan + Shay's "19 You + Me" debuts at #96. Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney comprise a county duo. Pharrell's "Happy" debuts at #98. It's from the "Despicable Me 2" soundtrack. The song reached #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart last week and is likely to bounce back to the top spot next week. This is the 13th different song titled "Happy" to crack the Hot 100. Only one of these songs made the top 10. Ashanti took a song titled "Happy" to #8 in 2002. Three other artists took songs with that title into the top 40: Surface (#20 in 1987), the Rolling Stones (#22 in 1972) and Leona Lewis (#31 in 2009). Which I'm sure made them all very happy.

"Die Young" was blocked by "Diamonds." It was a big hit just like "Timber." Number ones don't come to popular songs, they come to the biggest hits of the particular week. Timing is important. "Timber" was lucky enough to be the hit in between "The Monster" and probably "Dark Horse." "Die Young" unfortunately peaked when there was just one other song that was slightly bigger. "Counting Stars" is doing the same thing right now.

Of course the star power of Mr. Worldwide made the difference! He has 13 digital top 10 hits in the US and he made sure to promote his latest single Timber. His star power sold this song last week when he performed at the Ryan S's New Year Eve; his performance convinced 301,000 people to buy Timber.

Timber is the worst #1 since We Found Love imo. Oh well. :( Hopefully Pitbull's next single is better. You do like Harlem Shake then? What about 'Whistle'? Whistle was fine, quite catchy...Harlem Shake though, what a joke -___- like seriously you can't sit there and tell me that more than 5% of those YouTube views for HS videos were for the actual song itself and not because people just wanted to see the stupid dance meme. It was a no-brainer that it wasn't even close to being the most popular song. Never gonna forget the fact that Thrift Shop, my #1 song of 2013 could have and should have been 11 weeks at #1. If you seriously think Timber or WFL are worse, I don't understand you at all.

Nothing like starting off a new year with a crappy song. Last year after Locked out of heaven dropped, we had to endure the crap of Thrift shop forever. and then Harlem shake. I want to know how many people over the years who purchased such dribble still go back and listen and say "This was my jam". or is it "What was I thinking?".

Thrift Shop was the best song of 2013 though (as evident by its 2013 year-end position on the Hot 100 and Digital Songs). I still love it and so do many people obviously if they still watch it on YouTube. I don't know what you're talking about.

Horrible. The days when Terror Squad could score a top 5 single. Improvement over some of the s**t that has gone huge and this board champion.... 1) It's almost always "this is my jam." I love the music I love. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others don't. Everyone's tastes are different. 2) Ignore him, he hates 99% of everything made today and complains about it every week.

Then I don't understand why he is on a thread that discusses current music if he hates it so much? He should go to threads for the 80s or 90s or whatever music decade he loves then. Rather pointless to be sitting here and just complaining (not to mention annoying for the rest of us).

Ok I can kind of understand why you hate Timber, I like it but it's not my favorite and I also like TM more than Timber (although I'm ok with it being #1 because it was time for a new #1 already)...the only thing I like about it is that it's catchy. Of course the lyrics clearly didn't have too much effort put into them. But I don't understand TS, like you're literally among maybe 3% who have something bad to say about this song. It's catchy, funny, has a lot of effort put into it, with great production from Ryan Lewis, and was the perfect jam for 2013 (as clearly many people thought if it was the year-end #1 song of 2013) and much preferred over Bieber or whatever so it makes me question just what the hell does a person listen to if they don't appreciate what is considered by a vast majority to be a very well-made song. It really gets on my nerves when someone talks crap about my favorite songs/artists. Not so much when it's a song/artist that I kinda like but isn't my favorite, I can let that go.

I find it interesting how Demi's version is exactly 11 spots behind Idina's two weeks running. Will the trend continue?!
