In the credits isn't really the same thing as 'in the movie'. Demi's version isn't played anywhere during the actual film, is it? Whereas Idina's is featured because a) it's plot-relevant and b) performed by a main character. Idina's is the main version, which to me is why it was the one that received all the nomination attention. Demi's is a supporting version, same as it would be had the pop version been done by anyone else.

I just made that comment with past Disney songs in mind. not recalling all the instances the nominated songs were performed. I see that in some instances, the singing voices heard in the movie performed the song at the Oscars (i.e. "A Whole New World"), and for others, it was the "pop version" that was performed (i.e. "Colors of the Wind"). So, I guess it's just a matter of choice or availability- or whether the acts want to perform.

Poor Angela Lansbury could have had a hit single.

Honestly, I believe if the original weren't as big of a hit as it is, then it wouldn't have been performed at all on the Oscars. U2 probably would've performed their song instead.
Also, this has been relisted under Cool New Music!

The song itself was nominated not a specific version. Both versions are of the same damn song. If Demi's had blown up, she probably would've performed it at the Oscars.
Anyone could've performed the song. There's no rule on that. Both movie and pop versions of Disney songs have been performed at the Oscars.

I thought Demi's version had different lyrics?
Either way, Demi's pop version isn't as good as, say, Celine Dion/Peabo Bryson on "B&tB" or Christina's "Reflection," which is probably why the in-film version did better.

I thought Demi's version had different lyrics? There's, like, 2 lines that are different. The structure and arrangement is mostly different. Demi's version omits a verse and maintains a constant chorus (Let it go, let it go, can't hold back anymore) rather than changing.

Demi's version omits a verse and maintains a constant chorus (Let it go, let it go, can't hold back anymore) rather than changing. She changed the last two lines in the second verse and used another bridge. That's all I heard.

I prefer the Demi version, but only because of the bridge. The lyrics (which are not found on the original version)
Β¨Standing frozen In the life I've chosen.Β¨
give me life.

Yeah, I think the Oscar's just ask the more popular version to be performed. Whitney and Mariah's version of When You Believe is not the film version. Actually, their version had Babyface as a writer as well. But the film version is always the nominated version.

Well you have to consider that the writers have said that they specifically wrote the song with Idina Menzel in mind. While writing it they considered how she would sing it and that's how they came up with those ridiculous high notes. I also think that there's some crossover between broadway and movie stars so there were a lot more of the voters who'd be familiar with Idina Menzel vs Demi Lovato.

They're voting on the composition, not the performer.
I don't see how that's hard to understand.

I don't see why this is even an issue or why it is even being discussed. It's a hypothetical I that didn't happen.
Fact: The version in the main feature is Idina's. Fact: Demi's version appears in the credits. Fact: Neither version specifically was nominated for the Oscar, just the song itself. It's exactly like Song of the Year at the Grammys. Fact: Idina performed at the Oscars. Fact: Idina's version is the more popular version. Fact: This shouldn't be surprising because never has the pop version technically been the more popular version. This is just the first time in history that the way the music industry works can support the movie version alone. Never before has an individual Disney song been available to receive its own points for charting purposes. Streaming and digital sales are to thank for this. Do you really think when people think of "Beauty and the Beast" that they're thinking of Celine Dion? Nah, they're definitely thinking of Angela Lansbury even if they don't know her name.
Had Demi's version miraculously been the more popular version, she may have performed at the Oscars or she may not have. Why should that matter so much? Literally any of the nominated songs could have had their performers on that stage. I'd venture to say that the reason the song was performed at all at the Oscars was because the film it came from was the most popular film from the list of movies that had songs nominated. Had Frozen not been as big as it was, we could have easily seen Pharrell or U2 performing.
Also, when everything is said and done, is anyone really going to remember the Oscars performance? Is anyone really going to care that Idina's version was the more popular of the two? Because as far as it looks, both versions became hits in their own merits and both will easily be remembered in the Disney music catalog.

I like both versions, but Demi's is better in my opinion because I'm more of a fan of her pop voice than Idina's musical voice.

I've never seen the Oscars nor did I watch this year's. I didn't even think it was common for more than one or two people to perform on it. All I knew performance wise was Idina and P!nk (for some weird reason). Prior to that, the only person I ever heard of performing on the Oscars was Adele.
