This is EXACTLY why this new formula doesn't work. Nobody watched that video because of the song, they watched it because they wanted to see strangers kissing. The song just happened to be playing in the background. Exactly. Thrift Shop was the most popular song for 11 weeks last year, yet it only got 6 weeks at #1. Can't stress that enough.

Viral 'First Kiss' Video Sends Soko To No. 1 Debut On Streaming Songs, Top 10 Start On Hot 100The rising singer/songwriter blasts in with 'We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow' thanks to its inclusion in clothier Wren's 'First Kiss' ad campaign "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow," a single by atmospheric alt singer/songwriter Soko, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Streaming Songs chart with 11.5 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen BDS. The quickly-building viral hit concurrently launches at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 (which measures streaming, airplay and sales). Of the song's streaming sum (in the week ending March 16), 99% are from YouTube, the majority of which stem from users who viewed the viral video "First Kiss," which hit the Internet on March 10. Shot entirely in black-and-white, the 3-minute, 28-second "Kiss" clip captures 20 strangers sharing an intimate moment for the first time, along with their ensuing bashful, yet heartwarming, reactions. Throughout, Soko's song accompanies the potential romance, its subtly-stated melody and instrumentation adding to the ambience necessary to set the video's intended intimate mood. Originally thought to be a purely viral creation, "Kiss," in which Soko herself appears as one of the lip-locking strangers, was revealed to be a collaboration between Soko and Wren, a Los Angeles-based womenswear brand. "We asked 20 strangers to kiss for the first time," the company confirmed on Twitter the day of the video's release. "Tomorrow" was chosen for the clip by Wren's founder and creative director Melissa Coker. "I wanted to create something that was pure, authentic and full of emotion for the Wren Fall 2014 campaign," Coker wrote in an email to Billboard. "When casting the video, I reached out to the most dynamic, charming and inspiring people I know in LA, including Soko. She generously agreed to be one of the performers and went one step further: asking if I would like to use some of her music in it." "'We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow' has the perfect slow, ethereal feel to match the emotional charge of the video. It was a perfect match and added so very much to the project." Soko first released a video for "Tomorrow" on May 25, 2012. The track originally appeared on her debut album, "I Thought I Was an Alien," which was first released in January 2013. After the sudden rise of the "Kiss" clip, the set sold 1,000 units in the week ending March 16, from a negligible amount during the previous tracking frame, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Tomorrow" bows on the Hot 100 with 96 percent of its points from streaming. It also sold 10,000 downloads in the week ending March 16, up, like its parent album, from a minuscule amount the prior week. Soko nets the year's first top 10 Hot 100 debut and the first top 10 launch for an act's first entry since Ariana Grande began at No. 10 with "The Way" (April 13, 2013). It's the highest arrival for a new act since Baauer's "Harlem Shake" bowed at No. 1 to begin its five-week command. Like "Tomorrow," "Shake" surged to its success via viral means, as fans famously created masses of clips featuring the song and its feverish dance.

This song however, is #676 on iTunes, clearly showing the difference between the songs' prominence in their respective videos.

Even at HS's peak when it sold like 300k and was #2...it didn't deserve to be #1 because those 100 million views were not for the song itself, but for the dance meme (again I can't stress this enough).

Pharrell Williams Tops Hot 100 Again; Soko Surprises With Top 10 Debut"Happy" holds at No. 1 for a fourth week, while newcomer Soko's viral hit "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow" rockets in at No. 9. Aloe Blacc's "The Man" also enters the top 10.Pharrell Williams' "Happy" crowns the Billboard Hot 100 for a fourth week, and marks a notable radio audience milestone, while two titles enter the chart's top 10: Soko, whose viral hit "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow" blasts in at No. 9, and Aloe Blacc's "The Man," which rises 12-10. "Happy" continues its Hot 100 command, claiming top Airplay Gainer honors for an eighth consecutive week. The streak is the second-best dating to the award's 1985 inception, with Williams also on-board the record-holder: Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring Williams and T.I., linked a 10 weeks (in a row and total) last year. "Happy" tops the Radio Songs chart for a third week with a 12 percent surge to 210 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. In the Radio Songs chart's 23-year history, only two other titles have cracked the 200-million audience barrier: "Lines," which logged a record 229 million on the July 20, 2013, tally, and Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," which peaked with 212 million (May 28, 2005). "Happy" leads the Digital Songs chart for a fifth week, despite a 26 percent drop to 364,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (It swelled to 490,000 on last week's chart after he performed it on ABC's broadcast of the Academy Awards on March 2.) On Streaming Songs, "Happy" dips from its No. 2 peak to No. 5 with 5 million U.S. streams (down 37 percent), according to BDS. Still, it leads the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (2.8 million U.S. streams, down 13 percent, according to BDS) for a second week. The cut spends a sixth week at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and, as previously reported, takes over atop Pop Songs, Rhythmic Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts. Bookending the Hot 100's top 10, two songs enter the region, led by Soko, whose "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow" debuts at No. 9. The moody alt ballad opens at No. 1 on Streaming Songs with 11.5 million U.S. streams. Of the sum, 99 percent are from YouTube, the majority of which stem from users who viewed the viral video "First Kiss," which hit the Internet on March 10. Shot entirely in black-and-white, the 3-minute, 28-second "Kiss" clip captures 20 strangers sharing an intimate moment for the first time, along with their ensuing bashful, yet heartwarming, reactions. Throughout, Soko's song accompanies the sparks. Originally thought to be a purely viral creation, "Kiss" was revealed as a collaboration between Soko and Wren, a womenswear brand. "Tomorrow" bows on the Hot 100 with 96 percent of its points from streaming. It also sold 10,000 downloads in the week ending March 16, up from a negligible amount the prior week. Like "Tomorrow," "Shake" surged to its success via viral means, as fans famously created a firestorm of clips featuring the song and its frenetic dance. Aloe Blacc likewise enters the Hot 100's top 10 with "The Man" (12-10). After not receiving credit as the vocalist on Avicii's No. 4-peaking "Wake Me Up!" (at No. 25 this week), Blacc scores his first top 10. "The Man" benefits from its 20-19 push on Radio Songs (52 million, up 2 percent), as it concurrently enters the Pop Songs top 10 (12-8). It holds at No. 8 on Digital Songs (97,000, down 10 percent), while slipping 33-37 on Streaming Songs (2 million, down 3 percent). Also notably, with "The Man" interpolating Elton John's classic "Your Song," which reached No. 8 on the Hot 100 in 1971 (becoming John's first top 10), John and Bernie Taupin earn their first Hot 100 top 10 as writers since John's "Candle in the Wind 1997"/"Something About the Way You Look Tonight" reigned for 14 weeks in 1997-98. Back to the Hot 100's upper reaches, Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, spends a fourth week at No. 2 after it ruled for four weeks. The track also holds the No. 2 spots on Radio Songs (155 million, up 1 percent), which it dominated for two weeks, and Streaming Songs (1-2; 9.4 million, up 6 percent), which it led for four frames, while rebounding 5-4 on Digital Songs (165,000, down 9 percent), which it topped for five weeks. John Legend's first Hot 100 top 10, "All of Me," keeps at its No. 3 highpoint for a second week. The piano ballad holds at No. 2 on Digital Songs (215,000, up 2 percent) and No. 4 on Streaming Songs (6.5 million, up 14 percent), while rising 6-4 on Radio Songs (128 million, up 20 percent). T he Nos. 4-6 titles remain in place from last week on the Hot 100: Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, at No. 4 for a second week after four weeks at its No. 3 best rank; Bastille's "Pompeii," at its No. 5 peak so far (and atop Hot Rock Songs for a fifth week); and Lorde's "Team," at its No. 6 peak.Above Soko and Aloe Blacc at Nos. 9 and 10 on the Hot 100, OneRepublic's No. 2 hit "Counting Stars" rebounds 8-7, swapping spots with Beyonce's fellow No. 2-peaking "Drunk in Love," featuring Jay Z (7-8).

If only that happened a couple months ago so CS could've gotten at least 1 week at #1 :( DW The Man will still get higher haha, I think it will get at least to #7 (it's like #5 or #6 on iTunes and it's climbing on radio too)

Happy already just 2M AI behind MC's song...with today's update, Happy has already passed WBT...no doubt Happy is gonna beat BL's record...BL got a nice lengthy 7 months of holding that record...let's see how long Happy will hold it before an even more massively overplayed huge radio hit strikes later!

I wonder how they decide which commercial is eligible and which isnt. The Puppy commercial featuring the song Let Her Go by passenger didn't count but this commercial where everyone is talking over the song does? I actually watched this video days ago and I actually didn't even notice the song playing in the background.

So were all psycho music fans, and billboard is saying that that song, which none of us knew, is a bigger hit than The Man this week. It's the 9th biggest song in the country. Ridiculous.

I think it is legit. Would people be watching the video without the song? Would the video be such a hit if it were a different song?
I think the song is a factor, rather than a video of people kissing and oh by the way there is a song attached to it.

It's the same with fanbase only downloads such as songs by 1D.
That Soko song won't be anywhere near top 40 next week any more

I think the song is a factor, rather than a video of people kissing and oh by the way there is a song attached to it. Completely disagree. Whatever song they chose they still would have gotten the same amount of views. Unless it was a death metal song. Song chosen doesn't matter as long as it was slow and fit the mood. I bet even without a song it would have gotten that many views. That's how incidental the music is to the point of the video
