All the songs that are smashing in the United States (Fancy, Problem, Stay With Me) are doing almost nothing outside of English-speaking countries.

Coupled with how 21, Call Me Maybe, Gangnam Style, Somebody That I Used to Know, Happy and most of the major hits of the past few years blew up everywhere before they did in the US, it's safe to say America is no longer the world's tastemaker.

Because US radio would pick up the songs immediately? Like if STIUTK was sent to radio in July 2011 when it was a new release climbing the Australian charts, do you think it would've gotten US play? No chance. The delayed releases (to radio, they're almost always available to buy from early on) are because US radio is still so reluctant.

The only comparison to the Beatles is the occupation of the top two slots for a first chart entry- and since Billboard publishes charts, why not make the comparison? Charts and chart feats do not put one act on the same level as another act in any other way.

They were behind on Duran Duran, Wham!, and Culture Club.
They were behind Europe on the Backstreet Boys and N Sync.
This is nothing new... and yet the Hot 100 is still the foremost chart in the world, and the US is still the market everyone in the world wants to break.

Random chart anomalies occur with greater frequency these days than in the Beatles years.

"Fools" or not. Mentioning that the Beatles were the last to do something seems reasonble.

But beyond that, there really isn't any ay to compare.

Markets were completely different -

You have things today that were not around in the Beatles years that allow these things to happen frequently:

- Abundance of featurings to pad statistics --- This week alone there are 26 "featurings" in the Hot 100
- Every track on every album is a single and eligible to chart

Although Iggy Azalea has the top 2 spots, one of them is a "featuring"


if we put "featurings" and digital achievements on the same level as the Beatles and other acts that came before it then point-wise (per Joel Whitburn) the Glee Cast would be the second biggest artist of the rock era.(for example)

The US is the biggest market in the world, of course acts want to break there. A platinum record in the US gets you a lot more revenue than a platinum record anywhere else because its more units due to larger market size. Breaking the US means that you can do a big tour there, which will net you a lot more money than a similar scale tour in the UK, Australia, or any other country, because there are so many more places to hit and people to play to. The aura about breaking the US is still as present for most UK acts as ever.

No, but there was no reason for it to be delayed a year either. And in cases like STIUTK are different because that's a brand new artist. But why was "Happy" delayed in the US for such a long time?

Don't think it would've been a hit in like October 2011 either, lol. I mean look at Rather Be (which I will continue using as an example forever), sent for adds a couple months after release by when it was huge everywhere but North America; still barely moving. I don't think STIUTK being a new artist is relevant as most cases of this are new artists, so it's not an exception. If you want delayed US hits from artists that had prior US success, it's mainly like Talk Dirty and Trumpets where they chose to release a different single in the US, which is a different thing and not comparable. I guess there's Burn... which still took forever to climb. I don't know what went on with Happy, but it's only a couple European countries where it was a hit in mid-2013 so that one's not just the US where it was late.
