And all within a few weeks of each other too. More to do with issues behind how the chart was compiled in late 1974 than any song actually losing popularity that quickly

The charts were re-calibrated November 30, 1974, and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" rebounded 34-8 (after dropping 1-12 two weeks earlier).

This is why I'm not too keen on the YouTube/Vevo streaming methodology because a lot of people just watched the video to look at Nicki's ass and not for the song but I'm not trying to start the rant again... A lot of people just watched the Taylor video to see her make a fool or herself and listened to song to hear how awful it was. Doesn't mean they like it. What's the difference? If you don't want to start the rant again, don't. I would like to point out, though, that Nicki's ass is part of what makes "Anaconda" and Taylor's personality makes "Shake It Off," so they both relate to their songs, so I'm all for that counting as streaming points. It's not like those random videos the past year have brought us.

And all within a few weeks of each other too. More to do with issues behind how the chart was compiled in late 1974 than any song actually losing popularity that quickly Yes, as you can see there were 5 consecutive weeks in late 1974 where the #1 song plunged out of the top ten the following week. The charts were re-calibrated November 30, 1974, and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" rebounded 34-8 (after dropping 1-12 two weeks earlier). But does anyone know the specific weakness in the chart methodology that caused the songs to plummet so steeply?

85la, I know:
There are two reasons. In those days, radio airplay wasn't monitored by computers, it was based on where the songs fell on all the different Top 40 radio stations' playlists. These lists were imperfect, and were often based on the Program Director's desires, not specifically what his # 17 song was versus his #3 song. In those days, multiple singles off hit albums were released every three months, regardless of their predecessor's success. Thus the speed of the charts (and music / radio culture) was far faster than today. It would be like once Dark Horse hit #1 on the Hot 100, stations would be satisfied, and in order to keep their audience interested, would drop it and immediately start playing only Birthday.
So, once a song reached #1 on a radio station's playlist, it was frequently dropped or no longer reported the following week, in anticipation of the immediate followup. It's like the stations no longer cared. Occasionally a song would drop at different times nationally, or sales would lag a bit, thus a softer drop (Or even a 2nd or third week at the top of the Hot 100).
Now, why so dramatic in 1974? Popular theory is that Bill Wardlow, the Hot 100 Chart manger of the 70s was crooked, and fixed the charts for money (like Payola but nationally!). There are numerous such stories, particularly during the Saturday Night Fever era. Maybe true, maybe not. But those big drops in 74 - all falling to similar numbers outside the top 10 - always seemed pretty coincidental not to be fixed.

Even though Chandelier had a slow start, it's having amazing climbs on radio right now. It might outpace Rather Be and Break Free.
