And not to start a rant about streaming again, but I truly feel like Starships and Super Bass and even Turn Me On felt quite bigger at the time than Anaconda does now. Well, it's the song's first week in the top 10, so of course it doesn't seem as big as the songs you mention. You're comparing songs that had some longetivity to a week's peak. We still don't know how Anaconda will perform from now on.

We still don't know how Anaconda will perform from now on. No I meant in any given week out of the 10-15 biggest weeks for those songs those songs felt to me like they had drawn more popularity during that given week than Anaconda did this week. But maybe that's just because I don't really use YouTube as much as I did 2-3 years ago or discuss music with a lot of people (outside of Pulse) as I used to lol In my opinion TMO was her best one but it also felt like one of the smallest...maybe because it died out kinda quickly...it peaked at, what, #4? And it fell out of the top ten iirc after a few weeks and I only heard it on the radio (being a Canadian resident though) a lot for the first two weeks or so...guess it was one of those songs to explode briefly and then fade to obscurity. I hope that will be the case for Anaconda lol. Super Bass and Starships were presumably the dominant singles of hers, as they were year defining tracks (they were in year-end top 10 or 2011 and 2012, respectively, while TMO was only #35 I think, although I wish it would've done better than the other two...oh well). Could have also had a lot to do with David Guetta fading into obscurity after 2010 lol

The Hot 100 measures just one week. Of course a new song won't feel as big as an established hit in hindsight. I'd say Anaconda for this week definitely surpasses any of Nicki's past hits when taking into account the week by week.

Well each to their own. I'm not saying my opinion is better or worse than anyone else's lol. Just saying how I feel

Well, duh. That's because Billboard decided that it was a pop track (as they should), even though it debuted top 60 in the country airplay chart.

Chart Watch: Taylor Swift's Instant #1Despite Swift’s track record in country (seven #1 hits on Hot Country Songs), country radio is giving “Shake It Off” the cold shoulder. The overtly poppy song has yet to enter the Hot Country Songs chart. This isn’t the first time that a Swift single has been too pop for country radio. Two of her previous singles made the top 10 on the Hot 100 but never cracked Hot Country Songs: “You Belong With Me.,” which reached #2 on the Hot 100, and “If This Was A Movie,” which reached #10. Wasn't IKYWT shunned by country radio as well?

"Shunned" is NOT the same thing as "not released to". To say country "shunned" IKYWT or SIO suggests they were actually promoted to country in the first place, which they weren't. Taylor's last all-formats single was "We Will Never".

Well, it's a solo credited, but we cannot deny the presence of the legendary Sir Mix-a-Lot on "Anaconda." Sir-Mix-a-Lot's part is the only thing I like on Anaconda. :'(

Lol then why didn't the article include that one? Maybe he forgot to I guess lol It made #55 or something. That's odd lol. I see no country elements in that song whatsoever. Even "Am I Wrong" sounds more like a country song than IKYWT "Shunned" is NOT the same thing as "not released to". To say country "shunned" IKYWT or SIO suggests they were actually promoted to country in the first place, which they weren't. Taylor's last all-formats single was "We Will Never". Bad word choice I guess. I meant neglected. They didn't bother with them (radio can play a song without that song being promoted, can't it? Maybe I'm wrong). And according to Josh IKYWT was actually on country radio/charts, below the top 50 so I guess it might have been promoted.

Following yesterday's video premiere, Bang Bang will surely jump to the top 5 next week; maybe even top 3 or who knows, #1? Does Billboard count the MTV website views as well? Because it was an exclusive there up to now. "Bang Bang"s video has been on Jessie and Ariana's youtube pages since Monday, it was only an MTV exclusive for half a day. Edit: Huge congratulations to Taylor. This is her fifth era lead single, and she is still breaking records left and right, it must be fun to be her record label.

"Starships" was released during the chart run of "Turn Me On." I'm pretty sure "Starships" prematurely killed off "Turn Me On," otherwise it would have been more successful.

Chart Watch: Nicki Minaj Zooms To #2Nicki Minaj's “Anaconda” vaults from #39 to #2 in its third week on the Hot 100. The surge was fueled the video's premiere on Aug. 19 and by Minaj's performance on the VMAs on Sunday. The song was kept out of the top spot only by Taylor Swift's debuting “Shake It Off.” (We posted a separate blog on Swift's debut earlier today. If you missed it, here's a link.) "Anaconda" is based on Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” which logged five weeks at #1 in the summer of 1992 and went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. “Anaconda” ascended much faster than “Baby Got Back,” which took 11 weeks to climb as high as #2 (and 13 weeks to reach the top spot). This is Minaj’s highest-charting hit to date. It surpasses her own “Super Bass” (two weeks at #3 in August 2011) and Britney Spears's “Till The World Ends” (one week at #3 in May 2011). Minaj was featured on a remix of Spears's song—not on the principal version of the song. It probably shouldn't count as a top 10 hit for Minaj, but, according to Billboard, it does. "Anaconda" is Minaj’s 11th top 10 hit (again, counting that Spears remix). That extends her lead among female rappers. Missy Elliott is second, with 10 top 10 hits. Minaj has a second song in this week’s top 10. “Bang Bang,” on which she teams with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, rebounds from #10 to #9 in its fourth week. The song debuted and peaked (so far) at #6. "Anaconda" vaults from #42 to #1 on Streaming Songs, displacing Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass.” “Anaconda” received 32.1 million streams, which is the greatest one-week tally since Miley Cyrus's “Wrecking Ball” drew 36.4 million streams in September 2013 (the first full week after its video premiered). “Wrecking Ball” went on to receive a VMA as Video Of The Year. Will “Anaconda” be in line for that award next year? Place your bets. "Anaconda" jumps to #1 on both Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs. It dethrones "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX on both of these charts. This is Minaj’s third #1 on both charts. Her previous #1s on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs were “Moment 4 Life” and “Make Me Proud.” Both of those hits were collabos with Drake. "Fancy" was #1 on Hot Rap Songs for 18 weeks. That tied "Hot Boyz" by Missy Elliott featuring Nas, Eve and Q-Tip for the longest run at #1 in the chart’s history. Unlike “Fancy,” “Hot Boyz” didn’t also reach #1 on the Hot 100. It peaked at #5 in January 2000. Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass” dips from #2 to #3 in its seventh week. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week.I’m sure you noticed that female artists hold down the top three spots on this week’s Hot 100. It’s the first time this has happened since October 2013, when the top three were Lorde's “Royals,” Katy Perry's “Roar” and Miley Cyrus's “Wrecking Ball.” Sam Smith's “Stay With Me” dips from #3 to #4 in its 20th week. It peaked at #2. It's #1 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart for the third straight week. MAGIC!'s “Rude” tumbles from #1 to #5 in its 18th week. That's the steepest fall from the #1 spot since Britney Spears's “Hold It Against Me” dropped to #6 in February 2011 after debuting at #1 the week before. "Black Widow" by Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora jumps from #8 to #6 in is eighth week. It’s Azalea’s only song in this week’s top 10, which is another way of saying that her own “Fancy” and Ariana Grande's “Problem,” on which she is featured, both drop out of the top 10 this week. "Break Free" by Ariana Grande featuring Zedd drops from #4 to #7 in its eighth week. It tops Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a second week. Grande has a second song in the top 10: the aforementioned “Bang Bang.” Sia's “Chandelier” rebounds from #9 to #8 in its 16th week, matching its highest ranking to date. Nico & Vinz's “Am I Wrong” drops from #6 to #10 in its 19th week. The song peaked at #4. American Authors's “Best Day Of My Life” tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. The song reached #11 on the Hot 100. Maroon 5's “Maps” tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. The song reached #6 on the Hot 100. music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-nicki-minaj-zooms-to-2-221739201.html

radio can play a song without that song being promoted, can't it? They can, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will especially if the song in question does not fit their playlist and demographic, which in this case neither IKYWT nor SIO fit on country radio because there's nothing remotely country about the songs in question, and I'm not sure they would fare that well even if they were heavily country-fied because the material itself is too pop-leaning.

I assume a lot of people watched it on the first few hours, as it was advertised on the VMAs.

Still, a fair amount knew about the music video's launch but didn't care about the VMAs. I know this because a fan video with snippets of the official video along with clips from the 3 artists' various other songs to pad ended up trending on YouTube before the official launch. Now that the actual video is out on YouTube, it seems safe to say that it will have an actual surge in Streaming that will affect next week's chart.

Ah, my bad, I forgot about "Without You" and "Titanium" lol. #oops and CCHM was 2010 I believe and WDGA didn't do much so I don't really consider that one. It was in the top 40 for only like 10 weeks and never made the top 10. "Starships" was released during the chart run of "Turn Me On." I'm pretty sure "Starships" prematurely killed off "Turn Me On," otherwise it would have been more successful. But they were from completely different albums and even from a different lead artist. Why would that have any effect on Guetta's single? radio can play a song without that song being promoted, can't it? They can, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will especially if the song in question does not fit their playlist and demographic, which in this case neither IKYWT nor SIO fit on country radio because there's nothing remotely country about the songs in question, and I'm not sure they would fare that well even if they were heavily country-fied because the material itself is too pop-leaning. Yes, that's what I'm saying. They decided not to play them because they leaned towards pop too much and not enough towards country.

Chart Watch: Can Fifth Harmony Capitalize On Its VMA Win?The biggest surprise for me at Sunday’s VMAs came when Fifth Harmony took the prize for Artist To Watch, beating out 5 Seconds Of Summer (which I figured would win), Sam Smith, Charli XCX and Schoolboy Q. The big question now is whether Fifth Harmony will be able to capitalize on that award. The early signs are good. The female quintet’s current single, “Bo$$,” rebounds from #72 to #64 in its seventh week on the Hot 100. The song has already climbed as high as #43. This week’s big Hot 100 news is Taylor Swift's “Shake It Off” debuting at #1. I covered that in a Chart Watch blog that we posted earlier today. If you missed it, here's a link. I covered the rest of the top 10 action in another blog. Here’s a link to that one. This blog will fill you in on the key debuts and moves below the top 10. Jason Aldean's “Burnin' It Down” drops from #20 to #22 in its fifth week. It debuted and peaked at #12 four weeks ago. It's #1 on Hot Country Songs for the fifth week. Tove Lo's “Habits (Stay High)” jumps from #30 to #23 in its 13th week. It's the highest-ranking song below the top 10 that made an upward move this week …There are two “Kids” hits in the top 30 this week. Echosmith's “Cool Kids” jumps from #31 to #25 in its seventh week. Kenny Chesney's “American Kids” drops from #25 to #27 in its 10th week. Chesney's song has climbed as high at #23. Katy Perry's “This Is How We Do” vaults from #57 to #36 in its fourth week. That's the biggest positional gain on this week's chart. Red-hot rapper Young Thug is featured on three songs that are streaking up this week’s Hot 100: Rich Gang's “Lifestyle” (which also features Rich Homie Quan), which jumps from #44 to #38 in its sixth week; T.I.'s “About The Money,” which jumps from #91 to #79 in its third week; and Tyga's “Hookah,” which jumps from #94 to #85 in its second week. Bobby Shmurda's “Hot Boy” jumps from #52 to #43 in its fourth week … 5 Seconds Of Summer's “Amnesia” jumps from #54 to #46 in its eighth week. The song has already climbed as high as #16. (For their sake, I hope the lads develop “Amnesia” over their VMA loss to Fifth Harmony.) Wiz Khalifa's “We Dem Boyz” jumps from #58 to #49 in its 19th week. The song has climbed as high as #43. Khalifa lands his first #1 album on The Billboard 200 this week with Blacc Hollywood … Nicki Minaj's “Pills N Potions” jumps from #61 to #50 in its 14th week. The song has climbed as high as #24. Minaj's “Anaconda” vaults from #39 to #2 on this week's chart … Dustin Lynch's “Where It's At (Yep Yep)” jumps from #63 to #55 in its 16th week. "Fireball" by Pitbull featuring John Ryan leaps from #88 to #68 in its third week. That’s the week’s second biggest positional gainer … Frankie Ballard's “Sunshine & Whiskey” jumps from #80 to #72 in its seventh week. Blake Shelton's “Neon Light” is the week's second-highest new entry at #81. It's from his eighth (non-holiday) studio album, Bringing Back The Sunshine, which is due Sept. 30 … Maroon 5's “Animals” is the third-highest new entry at #86. It's from the group's fifth album, V, which is due Aug. 29 … Hozier's “Take Me To Church” jumps from #96 to #87 in is second week. Mr. Probz's “Waves” is the fourth-highest new entry at #88. The song spent two weeks at #1 on The U.K.'s Official Singles Chart in May. It has also reached #1 in Belgium, Austria, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. "Delirious (Boneless)" by Steve Aoki, Chris Lake & Tujamo featuring Kid Ink debuts at #96. It’s from Aoki’s upcoming studio album Neon Future. "Walk Thru" by Rich Homie Quan featuring Problem debuts at #99. It’s from the mixtape, I Promise I Will Never Stop Going In, which was released in November. I’m glad this song made the chart: Rich Homie Quan suffered two seizures and cracked his head open during a video shoot for this song. The incident occurred in May in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park. At least he got a chart hit for all his trouble. Shakira's “Dare (La La La)” re-enters the chart at #100. The song has climbed as high as #53. music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-can-fifth-harmony-capitalize-on-its-vma-003237415.html

The only reason "Shake it Off" isn't on Billboard's Country chart is because Billboard doesn't deem it (rightfully) country. So I'm not sure why Grein chose to write it as "ye to enter," as if it doesn't have enough points or something.

And three weeks ago, Katy had a HUGE flop according to Grein and this week it's "the biggest postiional gainer...." but obviously said without much enthsiasm from Grein. I should just wait for the chart, his columns have become pretty annoying.

He's surely just being a troll sometimes as he should know that Billboard randomly decides what fits a genre's chart. Which is why Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors", Ariana Grande's "The Way", and Lorde's "Royals" never entered Billboard's R&B/Hip Hop chart despite being played on the urban format. Same with Mumford & Sons' "I Will Wait" on the Country chart.

So I'm not sure why Grein chose to write it as "ye to enter," as if it doesn't have enough points or something. Becky G.'s "Shower" and Aloe Blacc's "The Man" both had enough points to enter Rap Songs and R&B Songs, respectively, early in their chart run but did not debut until much later because at first Billboard didn't categorize under that genre but did later on (I still don't get how the hell "Shower" is a rap song, just like I never understood how Gangnam Style was rap either though it was #1 on that 9 weeks, since it was and still is basically a useless chart when we have the Hot 100 which just ranks songs under the genre solely based on the order they're in on the Hot 100, same as Hot Rock Songs, Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Hot Country Songs, etc. I just don't get the point.) but yeah that's why it has yet to debut because who knows maybe Billboard will change their mind again.

Wasn't IKYWT shunned by country radio as well? That is a typo. They meant "I Knew You Were Trouble." instead of "You Belong With Me" (that hit #1 on Country Songs). It may have not entered the Country Songs tally, but "Shake It Off" did enter Country Airplay at #58. Yeah that was what I figured lol. YBWM sounded very country to me so it was surprising that it wouldn't have been on the country songs chart lol
