199813. Monica, "Angel Of Mine" Now I know why they say the best things are free.Released: 1998 It wouldn't be the late 90s without some schmaltzy R&B love songs. 12. Pearl Jam, "Given To Fly" A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw.Released: 1998 Pearl Jam gravitates toward introspective Springsteen-esque rock, and they do it so well. 11. Deborah Cox, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" How did you get here?Released: 1998 Love, love, love. The original mix is a flawless neosoul ballad. 10. Lucinda Williams, "Can't Let Go" I've got a big chain around my kneck...Released: 1998 The goddess of alt-country. Her Car Wheels on a Gravel Road album is the best place to start in her discography. 09. Massive Attack, "Inertia Creeps" She's moving up slowly.Released: 1998 Industrial and world influences make this whirlwind of a song an unforgettable one. 08. Lauryn Hill, "Ex-Factor" Lovin' you is like a battle and we both end up with scars.Released: 1998 A major contributing factor to her Miseducation's status as an iconic album. 07. New Radicals, "You Get What You Give" First we run then we laugh 'til we cry.Released: 1998 Catchy generational power pop that has managed to capture that moment in time in spite of itself. 06. Bonnie Raitt, "One Belief Away" You and I, we dance around it.Released: 1998 A mellow groove worthy of the greatest female blues guitarist ever. 05. Dixie Chicks, "Wide Open Spaces" Many precede and many will follow.Released: 1998 Organic country simplicity from an act that the American public owes a major apology to. 04. Whitney Houston, "My Love Is Your Love" And I feel like I wanna go home...Released: 1998 One of the diva's crowning achievements, probably my favorite track by her. 03. PJ Harvey, "A Perfect Day Elise" God is the sweat running down his back.Released: 1998 A soul-shattering anti-abuse record. PJ Harvey's never received the recognition she deserves, but maybe that's as it should be. 02. Jay-Z, "Can I Get A..." (feat. Amil and Ja Rule) How we gonna get around your bus pass...Released: 1998 Hot. Amil's verse still kills. 01. Fastball, "The Way" They drank up the wine, and they got to talking.Released: 1998 A riveting urban legend in song form.

1999
11. Orbital, "Style" Now I'm achin' for you.Released: 1999 A refreshing, upbeat, spaced out piece of modern psychedelia. 10. Porcupine Tree, "Stranger By The Minute" It makes me want to laugh.Released: 1999 Stupid Dream remains one of the most fully realized progressive albums I've ever heard. 09. Dr. Dre, "The Next Episode" (feat. Snoop Dogg) Out of town, put it down for the father of rap.Released: 1999 Quite possibly the year's best sequel. 08. Backstreet Boys, "I Want It That Way" Tell me why.Released: 1999 As a culture we've come to fully understand the significance of this song. 07. Jennifer Lopez, "Waiting For Tonight" It's perfect, it's passion, it's setting me free.Released: 1999 A phenomenally constructed dance track - it's still the best thing she's ever released. 06. The Chemical Brothers, "Under The Influence" Listen plz.Released: 1998 (as "Electronic Battle Weapon 3") Hypnotic dance music, via some thrilling u-turns and a sample that stays with you. 05. Stone Temple Pilots, "Sour Girl" What was she lookin' at?Released: 1999 Swoon-worthy pop-alternative as the band took one more stab at making it work. 04. Moby, "Natural Blues" Don't nobody know my troubles but God.Released: 1999 Barely besting the Chemical Brothers for sample of the year. 03. Tom Waits, "Get Behind The Mule" We'll shovel the dirt upon a coffin lid.Released: 1999 Fucking Mule Variations. What possesses someone to release an album that's as genius in its darkness as this. 02. Enrique Iglesias, "Be With You" Don't let me die.Released: 1999 Many years later, I'm still standing by my recognition of this as one of the best modern pop songs out there. 01. Mariah Carey, "Heartbreaker" (feat. Jay-Z) Why did you have to run your game on me?Released: 1999 And speaking of perfect pop songs. As cringeworthy as the video is in retrospect, the song remains a worthy #1.

The "Heartbreaker" video is her best! >:( I love all versions of this song, it's her best single release all around imo.

200010. Nine Days, "Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)" How many lovers would stay, just to put up with this...Released: 2000 I'm ecstatic that we're getting into the years where I remember songs being released and loving them when they were fresh on radio, and this is a prime example - me zooming into middle school, watching VH1 videos in the mornings before school. Good stuff. 09. Shaggy, "It Wasn't Me" (feat. Rikrok) You let her catch you?Released: 2000 Absolutely ridiculous, "butt naked, banging on the bathroom floor" ridiculous, but it's such a great period piece. 08. Jill Scott, "A Long Walk" I really dig your company.Released: 2000 The classy neosoul of Jill Scott's debut album featured some train of thought tracks that still bring the chill. 07. Five For Fighting, "Superman (It's Not Easy)" I'm only a man looking for a dream.Released: 2000 A period piece from the opposite end of the spectrum, as the track would find an audience a year after the album's release due to the events of 9/11/01 and people finding relevance in the song's lyrics. 06. Toni Braxton, "He Wasn't Man Enough" Didn't he tell you the truth?Released: 2000 Honestly, this song is so damn fun. Still is. 05. Madonna, "Don't Tell Me" Tell the wind not to blow...Released: 2000 The only thing country about this is the video, despite what many said at the time. Still, it's the last Madonna track I truly loved (I'd take "Girl Gone Wild" in a pinch though). 04. Alice Deejay, "Better Off Alone" Talk to me...Released: 1998 This is off the charts catchy, undeniably so. 03. Aaliyah, "Try Again" If at first you don't succeed...Released: 2000 That Rakim sample and Timbaland production backed up Aaliyah's best vocal performance. 02. Linkin Park, "In The End" Its starts with one...Released: 2000 The rap-rock hybrid of Hybrid Theory's success seemed like a change in the tide of pop music. 01. Coldplay, "Yellow" Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.Released: 2000 Just like the song's intro, Coldplay broke through to the masses via some killer tracks like this one. At this point, it'd be safe to give them the ol' reliablie "influential" tag.

1998Monica's "Angel of Mine" and Deborah Cox' "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" are both amazing ballads. Massive Attack's "Inertia Creep" is a whirlwind of a song, I like that description. Its production is really hot. Lauryn Hill - "Ex-Factor" - I'm not big on Lauryn (sacrilege, I know!) but this is really good and one of the songs I'd definitely choose as showcases of everything that was good in 90's urban music. New Radicals - "You Get What You Give" - LOVE. One of my favorite singles of 1998 too. I could be having the s**tiest day ever, and yet listen to that song and forget all about it for a moment. Jay-Z - "Can I Get A..." (feat. Amil and Ja Rule) - Wow... I had forgotten all about that song!! HOT. Fastball - "The Way" - Perfect #1. Love the lyrics, music and arrangement. Just an awesome song all around. 1999Dr. Dre - "The Next Episode" - I remember that haha! Jaaaaaaam. Backstreet Boys - "I Want It That Way" - One of my favorite songs of the bubblegum-pop/boy-band explosion from the late 90's. Tell me why... tell me why... tell me why...Jennifer Lopez - "Waiting For Tonight" - Yes and yes! This was and is my all-time favorite J.Lo song. Moby - "Natural Blues" - One of the few Moby songs I love and, yes, that sample worked. Tom Waits - "Go Behind The Mule" - Great songwriting. Enrique Iglesias - "Be With You" - Kylie's "On A Night Like This" always reminded me of this. Love it, though. Mariah Carey - "Heartbreaker" (feat. Jay-Z) - I'm with Mario here, you need to get over whatever bothers you in the video because it's one of Mariah's best (and you can basically count her actual great videos on one hand)! I prefer the remix with Missy and Da Brat, but the original is pretty awesome as far as pop songs go and that "give me your love" hook slays. Surprised you ranked this one so high... not complaing though lol. 2000Music from (way) back in the day is excellent, but I agree with you that it's cool to get into more recent and familiar territories... Nine Days - "Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)" - I love it, great little song. Shaggy - "It Wasn't Me" (feat. Rikrok) - Haha, I never took this seriously (duh!), but it was a bop, lol. Jill Scott - "A Long Walk" - Disregarding my dislike for her as a person, Jill is really talented and has made some of the best neo soul music of her generation. This my favorite by her and I love the way she sang it. Five For Fighting - "Superman (It's Not Easy)" - STELLAR song. Toni Braxton - "He Wasn't Man Enough" - Ohhh nice to see this here!! I've always loved this song from Toni. It was a great effort in modernizing her sound. So catchy. Madonna - "Don't Tell Me" - LMAO! Yeah, I don't think I love many of her songs from the 00's onwards either, but this is good and definitely my favorite on Music. Aaliyah - "Try Again" - One of Aaliyah's best for sure. Linkin Park - "In The End" - Classic.

1991
Even Flow remains as one of Pearl Jam's greatest tracks in a sea of many excellent songs. Ten still remains as one of the best debut albums in music history.
Loveless is the definitive shoegaze album, and "Only Shallow" is the most identifiable track and without a doubt, the best. Peaked at #27 on Alt in 1991, and should have done a lot more.
Hunger Strike was the most iconic part of a great collaboration between two grunge legends.
If You Have to Ask remains one of RHCP's most underrated tracks, and one of the best off Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Girlfriend is a sunny and breezy slice of alt-pop that sounded ahead of its time.
1992
I saw the Happiness in Slavery video before I knew what any of it was supposed to mean. Never took away from my enjoyment of the track.
90s Cure doesn't get much attention, but Friday I'm in Love is one of those songs that people still know from them today.
Plush remains the most well known song from a grunge band not from Seattle, and for good reason. Killer riff.
1993
Mr. Jones is a 90s classic, a song that everyone knows and loves, but I personally prefer "A Long December".
All Apologies is a sad song that becomes even more sadder to listen to knowing the circumstances behind it.
Cherub Rock opens up one of the best albums to be released in this year. That drum roll that opens it is iconic.
I prefer the original version of Night Goat, but the version on Houdini isn't that bad.
1994
Fell on Black Days is one of Soundgarden's supreme ballads, with Cornell's vocals shining.
Roman Candle is one of the best debut albums of the 90s, paving the way for a short but illustrious career filled with sorrow and relateable pain.
1995
I don't even know how many albums Guided by Voices have released by now.
Thom Yorke may hate High and Dry, but it's one of Radiohead's best ballads and right behind "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" for the best song on The Bends.
Heaven Beside You is the sonic equivalent of loneliness.
Champagne Supernova and all of it's 7-minute long glory closed out Oasis' last truly great album in style.
1996
For all the shit Pinkerton got back in the day, it's all been erased now, and El Scorcho is a prime reason why.
Crash Into Me is a voyeurist's dream fantasy.
Barely Breathing may have been Sheik's only hit, but the hooky pop tune made him one of the best one-hit wonders of the 90s.
What I Got is a quintessential summer jam.
1997
One Headlight is a song full of nostalgia for me, childhood memories held to this song are endless.
1998
Given to Fly is one of Pearl Jam's more forgotten hits, but the change in sound works well for them.
I just heard You Get What You Give on a pop station yesterday. What a catchy, bright song.
The Way is another great alt-pop song from the tail end of the 90s that still sounds fresh today.
1999
The modern prog movement was spearheaded by Porcupine Tree, who thrived on Steven Wilson's pondering lyrics and a knack for writing hooky melodies, and while Stranger by the Minute isn't quite as good as Even Less or Piano Lessons, it's still a standout on their fourth best album.
2000
Everyone knows "In the End". Its legacy 15 years later grows as Hybrid Theory stands out as one of the premier nu-metal albums of the decade.

200111. Radiohead, "I Might Be Wrong" I could have sworn I saw a light.Released: 2001 Amnesiac is probably my favorite Radiohead album, for sheer atmospheric indulgence. 10. The White Stripes, "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground" When I hear your lips make a sound.Released: 2001 Shades of Bowie on this one. Such a great sound. 09. Spoon, "Everything Hits At Once" Don't say a word, the last one's still stinging.Released: 2001 Lyrically biting, Spoon's music has been among this generation's best from the get-go. 08. Jay-Z, "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" He who does not feel me is not real to me.Released: 2001 After "99 Problems," my favorite Jay-Z single by a mile. 07. Jimmy Eat World, "Sweetness" Sing it back...Released: 2001 Astonishingly well-crafted power pop for the ages. 06. Eve, "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" (feat. Gwen Stefani) Drop your glasses, shake your asses...Released: 2001 A hot record that gave Eve some true mainstream success and signaled a new approach for Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. 05. John Mayer, "Why Georgia" Four more exits to my apartment, but I am tempted to keep the car in drive.Released: 2001 Back when John Mayer was everyone's (right?) guy with guitar crush. 04. Gorillaz, "Clint Eastwood" I'm useless, but not for long.Released: 200103. Daft Punk, "One More Time" Don't stop the dancin'.Released: 2000 I didn't connect the two until after ranking the list, but how fitting considering the animated videos for each of these tracks. Both were instantly memorable and are still among the most recognizable tracks of the decade. 02. Mary J. Blige, "Family Affair" Let's get it percolating...Released: 2001 Playing fast and loose with the dictionary, Mary threw her hands up in the air for an era of No More Drama. 01. The Strokes, "Last Nite" It was a great big lie.Released: 2001 The first appearance by the Strokes within the project, but my attention to them here will be as short-lived as their mainstream attention ended up being.

200208. P!nk, "Just Like A Pill" I can't stay on your morphine, 'cause it's making me itch.Released: 2002 One of the most perfect pieces of pop to come out of the last 20 years. 07. The Coral, "Dreaming Of You" Up in my lonely room...Released: 2002 An under-the-radar hipster favorite you've probably heard in and ad or a TV show at some point. 06. Bruce Springsteen, "The Rising" Can't see nothing in front of me.Released: 2002 Springsteen's last truly great song confirmed what we all already knew, that he's one of the difinitive voices of America. 05. Nelly, "Hot In Herre" I am getting so hot...Released: 2002 People have been partying to this so hard since 2002 that I'm surprised the human race has any clothes left to take off. 04. Iron & Wine, "Upward Over The Mountain" Mother don't worry.Released: 2002 One of the finest modern folk voices conjuring images of home, family, fear, darkness and instability. 03. Dixie Chicks, "Travelin' Soldier" Our love will never end.Released: 2002 Twice as patriotic as the Pro-'Murica anthems released by their male counterparts at the time. 02. Thievery Corporation, "Facing East" Listen plz.Released: 2002 The Richest Man in Babylon is a tremendous listening experience, I can't recommend it highly enough. 01. Missy Elliott, "Work It" Is it worth it?Released: 2002 Just as the #1 spot in 2001's list did, 2002 allows me to spotlight a song that should be called "Essential."

200310. Yellowcard, "Ocean Avenue" If I could find you now, things would get better.Released: 2003 It's a generational thing for me, the MTV pop-punk sound that I related to so much. Expect much more of this in the coming years' lists. 09. Travis, "Re-Offender" Foolin' my selfish heart, going through through the motions.Released: 2003 The best of Travis' sound - yearning in the lyrics matched with bright instrumentation. 08. Josh Turner, "Long Black Train" You can find redemption staring back into your eyes.Released: 2003 Refreshing in its folk and roots-country sound, Turner remains one of the most traditional voices in modern country. There, I wrote that without mentioning how hot the dude is. 07. Ryan Adams, "Answering Bell" Let your tears fall and touch my skin.Released: 2001 The reigning king of Americana and one of his most fabulous songs. 06. Alicia Keys, "You Don't Know My Name" My imagination's running wild.Released: 2003 Still so much love for Alicia's Diary, piano soul picking up where Roberta Flack left off. 05. Muse, "Time Is Running Out" I wanna break the spell you've created.Released: 2003 With one of the greatest modern male voices in Matt Bellamy, Muse brought the epic back to rock music. In fact, I'm noticing a trend within this year's list, as Ryan Adams, Josh Turner and Bellamy would all surely make a "greatest vocalists since 2000" list. 04. Craig Morgan, "Almost Home" I wish you'd just left me alone.Released: 2002 Within the country genre, this song ranks among the best-written modern hits, combining striking visuals with room for interpretation on the listener's part. 03. Kings Of Leon, "Molly's Chambers" You want it, she's got it.Released: 2003 Pre-"Sex On Fire" Kings of Leon doing their southern-alt thing with beards to match. 02. Damien Rice, "Volcano" What I am to you is not what you mean to me.Released: 2002 An ethereal Bell X1 cover that's as charming as it is intimate. 01. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Date With The Night" Don't tell me to fix her.Released: 2003 The song is incredibly dirty and fun, and Karen O's voice and presence is a wonder to behold.

2001Eve's collaboration with Gwen Stefani on "Let Me Blow You Mind" is amazing and a classic. "Everything Hits At Once" is *gorgeous*. John Mayer - "Georgia" - I like this, but not a favorite of mine by JM. Love both "Clint Eastwood" and "One More Time," and yes they're both definitely among the biggest standouts of the 00s. Mary J. Blige - "Family Affair" - I used to love this when it was out. It's still hot, but eh. 2002P!nk - "Just Like A Pill" - I actually had to stop and listen to this... I hadn't listened to it in years. Yep, still awesome. (And I'm not the biggest P!nk fan.) Nelly - "Hot In Herre" - Haa! This was huge. Dixie Chicks - "Travelin' Soldier" - <3 Thievery Corporation - "Facing East" - Besides a couple of songs, I'm not that familiar with Thievery Corporation. I will listen to the album you just recommended though, as soon as I get time. Missy Elliott - "Work It" - This is so nostalgic, isn't it? (Can't believe I just called a 00's song nostalgic! ) Missy was one of the acts who defined that decade. Love her. 2003The strongest bunch of the last three for me. Yellowcard - "Ocean Avenue" - Love the lyrics. And that chorus. Travis - "Re-Offender" - This is yet another example of a song I listen to for the first time, thanks to this chart, and instantly fall in LOVE with. Whoa! His voice is so emotive. I actually didn't want this song to end. Ryan Adams - "Answering Bell" - I like it... Alicia Keys - "You Don't Know My Name" - ...and this as well. I still LOL @ the creepy spoken part in the middle of the song. But yeah, this is awesome and so retro-leaning. AK at her best. Muse - "Time Is Running Out" - One of their best. Craig Morgan - "Almost Home" - Wonderful song. (I will be a country junkie by the end of this coundtown, I can tell.) Kings of Leon - "Molly's Chambers" - Cool song! Damien Rice - "Volcano" - LOVE. Damien Rice's voice is so beautiful. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Date With The Night" - Hmm, I don't know what to say about "Date With The Night" without annoying you (cuz obviously you love the song enough the song to rank it as #1). Um, the lyrics are interesting.

Landmarx, you have to finish this countdown! We're getting close to the end now, and I really wanna see what's coming up next; especially your selections on the late 00's up until today (which is the most solid overall era of music in quite some time IMO). I mean take your time (obv), but please don't drop this...

"Let Me Blow Ya Mind" is a bop. Same for "Family Affair."
I love "Time Is Running Out" too. I remember that year each of my friends was obsessed with that song, it was everywhere here between radio and TV commercials.
"Just Like a Pill" is one of P!nk's best tracks.
"You Don't Know My Name" is kinda basic as far as the songwriting goes, but it's classic AK.

I agree with the other comments about finishing this - it's wonderful! I haven't been able to provide the commentary the I would have liked due to time constraints but I've been loving your most recent entries.

Thanks Dreams and popstop! Just a heads up to all that I'm going to continue this on another site/venue. No one here really gives a s**t, haha. Please continue. Now that I'm doing my top 200, I want to see if we have songs in common.

200406. Keane, "Somewhere Only We Know" Sat by the river and it made me complete.Released: 2004 There's always room for ridiculously pretty songs. 05. Destiny's Child, "Lose My Breath" I'm starting to believe that I'm way too much for you.Released: 2004 Drumline pop for days. 04. Loretta Lynn, "Portland, Oregon" (feat. Jack White) But we loved enough for the both of us.Released: 2004 A hypnotic reinvention of one of America's original badasses through the power of a modern rock legend. 03. The Walkmen, "The Rat" Can't you hear me, I'm calling out your name.Released: 2004 Anthemic Springsteen-esque driving rhythm. amplified through a vintage punk sound, but polished into something that's entirely its own. 02. Gwen Stefani, "Hollaback Girl" B-A-N-A-N-A-S.Released: 2004 There's a lot that could take away from this, but the truth lies in its infectious production and timeless Gwen Stefani inflection. 01. Sufjan Stevens, "The Dress Looks Nice On You" I can see a lot of life in you.Released: 2004 The lowkey folkiness and mysticism in Sufjan's music is an acquired taste, but once you get it, you're in for life.

I guess it's not necessary to say that I'm little behind this, but I will try to catch up in the following days.
Anyway, regarding your recent post from 2004, a massive yes for the inclusion of "Somewhere Only We Know". I think this is one of my favourite songs from Keane! Also, thumbs up for "Lose My Breath" and "Hollaback Girl".

"Lose My Breath" is one of DC's hottest singles still. Straight up fire. "Hollaback Girl" slayed.
