So it looks like the song is off to a respectable start, but is the "who is Fancy" deal getting any traction? I feel like there isn't THAT much discussion around the "mystery." There was the Time article that cited @kurt and then a few other blogs from people who seem to already know who he is/know the gimmick - but I'm not seeing this massive media blitz.

Sure there is...as the song grows so will the mystery.

Love this. My buddy Telemitry co-wrote this song. I am confused by the picture posted of Jake Hagood though. Not sure if that's the image they are going to unveil of him or the image of the Fancy Hagood that has been hanging around Nashville for a while now. Two different looks.

He looks way more masculine in that photo. I've never known him to go by the name Jake.

The chorus of this song is a quite similar to "Stay With Me' by Sam Smith… which in turn was identical to "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty. Unlike Sam Smith, Who is Fancy changed a couple of the notes of the chorus so that it is not a carbon copy, so there probably will not be another joint songwriting credit given to Tom Petty…

Tom Petty never was the problem there were more similarities between The strokes Last nite with a song of Tom Petty than there are with Stay with me, but Petty is not the only writer. To be honest, i don't think Petty would win a lawsuit against Smith, because apart of several notes of the chorus the songs are very different, but in the end Smith's team did the best, because i lawsuit for plagiarism in the end would cost him a lot more than the deal even if he ends winning it. They acknoleged the similarities, Petty recognized not bad intentions, and everyone ended happy. Anyway, it will depend of internet behaviour around the song, because i doubt Tom Petty is searching for similarities in new songs, but as i say, i doubt he was the one who wanted a deal

Because they settled out out of court, no judge ever declared that Stay With Me plagiarized from I Won't Back Down. So it is incorrect to say that Petty & Lynne "won" their lawsuit.
But the terms of the settlement are a de facto victory for Petty & Lynne. Moreover, because this settlement gives Petty & Lynne songwriting credit, it effectively does admit that the song borrowed from I Won't Back Down. They're not simply admitting similarities; they're saying that Petty & Lynne deserve to be recognized as co-writers. It is not at all equivalent to a tobacco company paying off some cancer victims to make an inconvenient lawsuit go away.
I believe JJose's other point is that he believes it was Jeff Lynne--not Tom Petty--who pushed for this lawsuit based on the fact that Petty did not (to my knowledge) sue over Last Nite's likeness to American Girl or Dani California's likeness to Mary Jane's Last Dance.
That could be a fair point, but at the same time, the offense wasn't as egregious. Stay With Me *clearly* borrows (intentionally or not) from I Won't Back Down, whereas the other two examples involve strong similarities. Stay with Me was far more of a "slam dunk" case for Petty than the other two would be.
-- Back to "Goodbye," though. I'm not really hearing anything that copies of Stay With Me or I Won't Back Down...the BEAT calls to mind Say it Right and Undressed at different times, but I'm not getting the Sam Smith reference.

It's just the "ooh"s in the beginning of "Goodbye" are mildly similar to the "ohh"s in the middle of "Stay With Me".

This whole 'we'll reveal the artist when the song reaches the top of the charts' sounds odd. Like how do they even know it's going to top the charts anw? Unless he pulls a Sia and doesn't show his face in the video and the performances I doubt how this will make it to the top only with the aid of airplay (if it catches on) and eventually sales.

Tom Petty did sue. And won. He gets royalties from "Stay with Me" now. Umm no, and in fact he clearly say that the words lawsuit never was mentioned. They contacted Sam's management, they acknoleged the similarities, they reach a deal. As simple as that. But that was not my point, my point is that (that's my personal opinion) it was not Tom Petty's idea, and i say that because he didn't open his mouth to only clarify the deal, in the case of The Strokes he clearly say that the beginning of Last nite was exactly the same that one of his songs but he never made any attempt to contact the Strokes, reach a deal or sue them. The difference was in that case he was the only writer of the song, and on I won't back down he was the cowriter, so it was another person involved

This is giving me Timbaland circa 2006-2007 vibes, but I really like it. I hope it continues to grow on the charts in the coming months.

Pretty brilliant marketing strategy, gotta say. Usually I'm never a fan of these "be yourself/love yourself" pep talks that come in songs, but the song/video is such an exception.

I'm starting to stan majorly for this song, it's just so perfect and catchy. I also love this cloak-and-dagger style of "Who Is Fancy?" that they're displaying in the vids and elsewhere.

That Justin Bieber theory is hilarious. Of course it has the little problem that everybody knows how Bieber's voice sounds

Is there any possibility of chances of sales and radio airplay for 'Goodbye'? When will 'Goodbye' be going to Billboard Hot 100? What happened to sales and airplay to Who Is Fancy's 'Goodbye'?
