For most men and women, him being gay won't matter. But his femininity may be a problem for some men since we tend to be very 'headstrong' and "SPORTS". But mainly, I think to succeed if you're gay and want to sing about love, either sing generally and not about a gay relationship, or hide that you're singing about a gay relationship (which is what this song is about, a lover won't come out). Although it is obviously accepted to be gay now (for the most part), and marriage legal in a lot of places, people who disagree with it (idiots, imo) will not buy music from a man singing "I love my husband". But in general, I don't think him being gay will affect his career and fame, it'll be how feminine he is, which is just sad (sad that he could be ruined for being himself)

The good think with english is that you don't need to hide anything at all, because it's very easy to make a song very universal. Everybody knows Sam Smith's songs are about a man, but they are easy to relate to anyone.
In english you can write a very personal song, and that song can be sing by a man or a woman without the need to change a comma in a lot of cases.
Anyway, there are a lot of things that changed in recent years. I remember back in the 90's that people always said that one of the greatest burdens for Robbie Williams to break in the United States was that he was not masculine enough or not traditionally masculine. Well Robbie Williams is like Rambo if you compare him with Justin Bieber, so it's pretty obvious that at least into the younger audiences (or at least in pop audiences) the things changed a lot and they are not so narrow minded in terms of behaviour (becuase that has very little to do with sexual orientation).
That doesn't mean that a gay singer has a lot more probabilities if he is "masculine" or simply not flamboyant. Anyway, sometimes charisma just shadows everything else, and we have the great Mick Jagger as example, he is/was not handsome, he is/was quite flamboyant on stage, but woman loved (and i'm pretty sure still love) him.
One of the worst things an artist can do is prefabricate an image, i'm not talking about an stage persona (a lot of artist transmorm themselves when they are on stage) but just the classic label making the singer being something he is not. In this times when social media is everywhere is difficult to fake with conviction. And i'm not talking about sexual orientation (in fact there are a lot of celebrities faking their sexual orientation, not everybody buy it, but as long as magazines find profitable the fake couple they are goint to promote them) but attitudes ans styles. When a label prefabricate an image for a singer made to people like him, sooner or later it explode in their faces. We have a lot of cases of very very clean images, destined to be liked by preteens. It's difficult to run out that image without destroy your career in your attempt.
What i wanted to say is that if the guy is femenine and like his nails polished, it's better not try to be someone else. Yes, maybe he won't succeed, but the odds are that he won't succeed if he change for the sake of being liked, and it's always better if he get fans being who he is

Can someone tell me if this still has a chance or not? it's a great song No; it got purged from the chart three weeks ago and Republic even pulled the planned 4/20 HAC adds date. It's done.
