Re: Genre classifications - isn't classifying "Shut Up And Dance" as "Alternative" quite the stretch? It sounds mighty poppy to my ears, with an 80's/new wave bent. They'll take it when it's successful.

Wiz Khalifa F&F7 Soundtrack - See You Again Taylor Swift 1989 - Shake It Off Rihanna - Unapologetic - Diamonds Wasn't Meghan Trainor's "Title" #1 on the Billboard 200 simultaneously with "All About That Bass" being #1 on the Hot 100? Or was that when "Shake It Off" took back over? Nope, Title came out when 1989 already was #1 (she kicked Taylor out too :v) and 1989 came after AATB finale week

Didn't know BL was #1 album :o Yep lol just for the one week though 8/17/2013 Adele was able to do it for the most week's with "21" (album title, not number of weeks haha) - 4 weeks for "Rolling In The Deep", 1 week for "Someone Like You" and 2 weeks for "Set Fire To The Rain" for a total of 7. Amazing how 21's weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 spanned over more than a year lol :O #slay

Taylor did it 7 weeks as well D: 2 with SIO, 5 with BS
Guess it's not that cool cause it's only 2 singles against 3 in a longer period c:

It's like how Hips Don't Lie will be in the Top 10 of Latin Digital Songs from now until the end of time because BB decided it could chart on the latin genre charts and it far outsells most real Latin songs.

Yep, it was a multi-week No. 1 on Alternative Songs.

Uh...SUAD topped the Alternative chart not too long ago. You can't just write it off and say it's not Alt when something like that happens.

Yeah it would be like saying "Radioactive" is not alternative just because it made almost #1 on pop and reached the top 10 on the Hot 100. Makes no sense whatsoever. SUAD did in fact top the alternative format which a non-alternative song could never do. Hell, even "Rude" made the top 20 on the format last year (although I guess that one is debatable and can be classified as being much closer to reggae-pop than to alternative)

Yeah, true...so if "Alt Rock" stations were spamming it, that's not Billboard's call. I guess I just don't have a great understand of what "Alt" encompasses, then? SUAD just sounds like 80's-influenced pop/rock to me. Lyrically, it wouldn't have sounded out of place on 1D's last two albums.

Is the alt chart still primarily based on the radio format, or is it (like the country and hip-hop/r&b genre charts) a re-formulated version that includes overall airplay and sales?
Just asking because Iggy and Macklemore have both topped hip-hop/r&b songs before, and I'm sure you guys know by now how most hip-hop/r&b fans feel about that...

Yeah, those chart toppers don't satiate me as an R&B fan. Nor does John Legend's "All Of Me" which is basically an Adele adult contemporary ballad that happens to be sung by a black man. Nor does Pharrell's "Happy" which is a pop ditty from a children's movie with some mild R&B touches of the retro nature. I want some fresh, inventive, forward thinking R&B back on top!

"Alternative Songs" = This week's most popular alternative/modern rock songs, ranked by airplay detections as measured by Nielsen Music. (Airplay-only) "Hot Rock Songs" = This week's most popular rock songs, based on radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen Music, sales data as compiled by Nielsen Music and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by Nielsen Music. (Like R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Country Songs, etc.)

The problem is similar to country, the more inventive and creative R&B songs (and hip/hop and rap) generally are not the favourite of radio stations which generally push more typical in sound and lyrics songs

Didn't know BL was #1 album :o He was another example where he was under-estimated. He went from predictions of 130K-140K to an actual total of 177K.

I'm not trying to be hyperbolic, but I feel that R&B music is probably at its worse state ever right now. The problem is, there is really no present-day R&B sound. I can't think of any other time it's been like it is now. Everyone's either doing retro R&B or singing (or rhythmically talking) over trap beats. I think that's why I like "Earned It" so much and have been rooting for it. Melodically, it has hints of the R&B music that most of us grew up on, but the cinematic aspects in the song kind of update it for the 2010s. It sounds modern.

My actual prediction for SYA is 5 weeks at #1, counting with SUAD rising fast.
About American Oxygen... why it isn't higher on iTunes? I think BBHMM topped the chart faster.

Possible chart records next week. Not the One Sweet Day variety but still records
- If Riptide does not go recurrent, it will tie the record or longest stay in the Hot 100 peaking outside the top 20 (Moving Pictures set the record in the 80s peaking at #29 for 43 weeks - at this time it was the longest stay in the Hot 100 period which has been passed many times since)
Uptown Funk, if it can hold at #2 for another week will spend its 17th week at either #1 or #2, thus setting a record.

IMO Rihanna and her team hyped BBHMM more as the second single, and it had a well-received awards show performance. The first time we heard AO in full was when she performed it at the March Madness Festival, but she was having major sound/tech issues, so the performance didn't get much of a reaction. The video was then released as a Tidal 'exclusive' which I think dampened the buzz for it even more. I am kind of surprised AO is even as high as it is; the announcement for it being the next single seems to have been made pretty quietly.

I'm not even a massive fan of "Riptide", but I find this "record" pretty interesting - that a song has managed to stay popular enough to avoid going recurrent/falling below No. 50, but never popular enough to crack the Top 20. It's just stayed at this level of...middling interest for so long. Random, but impressive.
