The rapid rise in airplay of See You Again will likely slow its fall from the top and delay the sudden crash Predicting more than a week in advance gets a little tricky, as we saw "out of nowhere" new releases could come in and mess everything up. Predicting what those "out of nowhere" new track are also gets a little tricky. As we have seen a new release by a female pop star doesn't automatically translate to a #1 hit (see recent Rihanna songs for example). In fact the nextt "out of nowhere" hit might not be from a female pop star at all. But at least this time we know what's coming so it's not really out of nowhere at all unless a viral smash pops out similar to Gangnam Style. Fans are anticipating the big releases from Britney/Iggy and Taylor (and we as chart followers are also aware of this), as well as we know that SUAD is on the rise (and is being performed on The Voice which, depending on the timing, could be the deal-breaker). So that's three contenders for dethroning SYA as early as the 5/23 chart. I dread the thought of all three of the, failing as that would mean no competition for SYA and that exploitation will continue to dominate for who knows how much longer...not only is the chart going to be boring to watch, it will be really sad to see how Paul is being used...
I can tell you don't like the song, I won't comment on the "exploitation" thing for now. We as chart followers are aware of new female pop singles. LOL - this is Pulse, that is what this board does. Not all of them hit #1 though.
See You Again charted for 3 weeks before dethroning your song. Did it come out of nowhere or were we not paying attention? We as chart followers should also be aware of the movie schedule and the tendency for hit songs to come from these movies, instead of being blind-sided that a blockbuster movie produced a hit single not sung by Britney or Taylor or whomever. This one goes further with an exploitation (another word for that might be "tribute") song that is resonating with people. We as chart followers know that Shut Up and Dance is on the rise but should also know that See You Again has not peaked yet.

We as chart followers know that Shut Up and Dance is on the rise but should also know that See You Again has not peaked yet. SYA has definitely peaked in sales and probably streaming, meaning that radio play is the wild card here. I do partially agree with you on the bolded though, in the sense that we (well, I, at least) shouldn't have practically ruled it out considering that it's the lead track off the soundtrack of the blockbuster, but on the other hand We Own It never did make the top 10, hence the skepticism about SYA at the time. I am aware that not every pop diva release debuts at/quickly rises to #1, but it is certainly a possibility. I like SYA a lot as a song, but it's what's behind the song that bugs me and prevents me from enjoying it a lot more...of course the way one perceives the song is purely subjective. But yeah, like you said, we will see what happens on the charts!

Technically you are correct. Nowhere to go but down from a 464K opening on sales. Streaming had been around 25M for 2 weeks so you are technically correct there too. The rise at radio will keep those levels high for a while probably.
I agree that it is a possibility that pop diva releases debit quickly and rise to #1 is a possibility. You should also consider that songs not from pop divas are capable of that too. The exploitation tribute song could be around a while or it could suddenly crash in 3 weeks when the pop diva cavalry arrives. We will see.

Well there's the possibility of a viral sensation like Gangnam Style too. And I thought SUAD was chatting for 23 weeks lol...typo perhaps I guess speaking of which, if SUAD were to in fact make it to #1 on 5/30 then it would be reaching #1 in its 27th week on the chart, tying it with With Arms Wide Open for the 5th-longest climb to #1

RIHANNA - American Oxygen: 2.245 (- 0.530) it's been sent for adds, right??? It's too bad this song isn't doing better. I really like it, thought it could really smash. Although I'm not sure, maybe it hasn't been sent for adds yet.

Do you think Girl Crush can smash on pop radio? I hope so. Is difficult but not impossible. I hate the most of country songs but I love it anyway... If Stay With Me smashed why not?

In fact the nextt "out of nowhere" hit might not be from a female pop star at all. Im def w/ you. Guess the lesson of possibly the decade or century lol ( so far) is what happened with UF/SYA. As of *right now, I don't see/feel like anything is within striking distance of SYA esp. now that SYA is seeriously starting to smash on radio, still holding up very well w/ sales (even w/ the hype of the movie kinda slowing down) and super strong streaming points. Now, it's becoming a hit due to the song itself more than hype of the movie (which obviously gave it a major advantage/promotion). Again, *multi format radio is def. getting all over it...hard. Yes, in the next few weeks we'll see if it was flash in the pan all hype song vs. true substance. While I think it sounds dated and not all that, it def has that 'sound' the GP loves/continues to buy in droves (esp. w/ radio giving it way more exposure than just the movie). Not at all feeling SUAD is strong enough to come close to toppling SYA. Earned It will be lucky to peak at #2 possibly next week or the week after. It's sales just arent going anywhere (basically stagnant..same way like LMLYD ended up). Gut is telling me the Britney song may be another Rihanna like situation. All hype, zoom up to #1 on iTunes but end up not being very good or having longevity. If that proves correct, SYA has no competition in sight.

I think Hey Mama has a chance for #1 or at least top 10. It is #8 in Itunes for a while but is just rising in radio. it also made a huge leap this week on the Hot 100.
Maybe a few more week til top 10...

People love "exploitation" songs of celebrities, so this one has a good chance of sticking around awhile. Back in 1997 they "exploited" Princess Di to the point of generating the biggest selling single in history.

Is there a way for someone to write a song about someone they loved without some people calling it "exploitation?"

Is there a way for someone to write a song about someone they loved without some people calling it "exploitation?" Well.... No matter how genuine someone make a song about someone they loved, if it smashed and become a huge success, many will call it exploitation. The only way such songs would be accepted as genuine only if it didn't have any success, especially if it didn't dethrone a song in the verge of breaking a long-standing record ;)

Is there a way for someone to write a song about someone they loved without some people calling it "exploitation?" Nightshift by the Commodores and Missing You by Diana Ross (which is such a sad song) were tributes to Marvin Gaye. I'll Be Missing You a tribute to Notorious BIG. I always thought those were genuine. And I never thought Elton Johns tribute to Lady Diana was exploitive. I would assume in SYA situation, producers and/or directors asked for a tribute song. Makes sense to me since its a huge movie franchise.

This post was written as a joke by the way. This and other tribute songs are wonderful and hits for a reason.
The only reason "See You Again" might be considered "exploitive" in my opinion is not because of the lyrics or who it is about but because some in this thread may feel wronged because it was used in what could appear to some to be a blatant attempt to block Uptown Funk from getting 17 weeks at #1.

I still think it should be Charlie Puth feat. Wiz Khalfisawdm. People know this song for the hook, not the rap
