A soundtrack single takes over at #1 on Radio Songs, replacing a soundtrack single from the same movie.. That's gotta be a first. Ooh...fun factoid time! Thanks for pointing that out :) The only other example I could find happened in '92 with the Boomerang Soundtrack (which I'd never heard of until today): Boyz II Men - "End Of The Road" (13 weeks) P.M. Dawn - "I'd Die Without You" (2 weeks) Whitney came close with "I Will Always Love You" and "I Have Nothing" (from The Bodyguard), but those were interrupted by a song from a different soundtrack: "A Whole New World."

It's worth noting, though, that should the same thing happen on CHR (which looks likely), it'd be the third time that happened, after Saturday Night Fever ("Stayin' Alive" followed by "Night Fever") and City of Angels ("Uninvited" followed by "Iris").

Um..I believe BB got it wrong. Isnt this the THIRD week UFs been at #2 after 14 weeks at #1. If so, that means it def. wouldve broken the record. My god, it looks like it would've even had a shot at 18 or 19 weeks at #1! 8*o

Well, this is the first example where the soundtrack (and its own promotional single set) is the only source for the songs at the time of the replacement. Boomerang was released in July 1992. I'd Die Without You's commercial single (which was marketed for the upcoming album) was released in October 1992. The song ended up leading radio songs starting on the chart dated February 13, 1993. Meanwhile, neither The Weeknd or Ellie Goulding have announced their songs to be released on future albums of their own.

Wikipedia (which, God knows, isn't perfect) says it took over Hot 100 Airplay on November 21, 1992. Their album didn't come out until March '93. EDIT: Billboard's site confirms that it climbed to No. 1 on November 21, 1992. I get what you're saying, though - slightly different situations. Though both The Weeknd + Ellie could certainly tack these songs onto their next albums too.

In any case, it's still the same scenario: it topped Radio Songs after becoming a promo single for the duo's album as opposed to the soundtrack. Sorry about goofing on the dates: Billboard has linkable peak dates now, but apparently it's got more than its fair share of glitches (lots of display errors and such; Saw a lot of December 31, 1969 dummy dates for peaks).

His reasoning (a.k.a. the labels) is so weak. Get rid of Afrojack from the credits and leave him as a co-producer.

So "See You Again" officially prevents "Uptown Funk!" from breaking the record. I bet SYA will be every Mariah fan's favorite song now lol. But my point is that as it turns out, "Earned It" and all the other songs would not have dethroned UF! in time. Next week it probably would've been dethroned as in the current situation it looks like this is its 18th and final week in the top 2. Let's see now how long it will stay in the top 10...

Does anyone have a list of most weeks in the top 2-3-5? I read that Uptown Funk broke the record for most weeks in the Top 2 last week and Top 3 this week, but that Billboard didn't mention it. The reason why Billboard doesn't mention it is because it is not a legitimate, official record it is one that only we on Pulse discuss amongst ourselves. There is a list for each somewhere on Pulse but I'm not entirely sure of its whereabouts. Hopefully someone on here can point it out.

I bet SYA will be every Mariah fan's favorite song now lol. Maybe zombieshadesofgrey but not every Mariah fan. lol Yeah lol I bet he's been having a huge celebration these past few weeks -___- it is really annoying how people like that always get what they want... but yeah lol I think many other Mariah stans will buy and love SYA out of gratitude for it, because clearly if it didn't come along to save them then Mariah would've lost the record as EI and the rest of the songs would not have dethroned UF in time. Uptown Funk's staying power at number 2 on the Hot 100 makes me hope it can at least get back at number 1 for one week to break that tie for second place. I hate to say it, but it's not gonna happen. A couple weeks ago I thought it might do it after SYA gets 1 or 2 weeks at #1 but as it turns out SYA refused to plummet after the movie impact like most blockbuster soundtrack hits do and somehow managed to sell over 300k for yet a third week in a row. In fact, this is probably its last week in the top 2 as well. Either TQ or EI (or maybe even both) will pass it next week (that means SYA will block one or both them which really sucks...I can't wait for SYA to be dethroned).

Anything is a "legitimate official record" Billboard writes articles that they hope attract an audience. They will print what they think will attract the most attention. A record for most weeks in the top 3 or top 4 is certainly legitimate and certainly official but do people really care?

I think it's almost safe to say in terms of total weeks in the top 2 (and overall potential weeks/points) it may end up the biggest hit of the century so far (even though there are numerous other 14 weeks at #1 songs). *That, would be worth mentioning and Im sure BB will go there if/when it achieves that. It prob. has to first get the points based on their old and new system. I'm sure there are non #1 songs though that have more overall points. If UF lingers in the top 5/10 for quite some time which looks likely, def. don't be surprised for BB to randomly declare it 'officially the #1 song' of the century so far or something along those lines.

Uptown Funk's staying power at number 2 on the Hot 100 makes me hope it can at least get back at number 1 for one week to break that tie for second place. Impossible. Only shot UF had was if SYA was all hype and a one week fluke w/ sales. What happened w/ SYA was like lottery odds. Well..in this day/age nothing is really lottery odds anymore lol cause 'something' can just come out of nowhere and go viral or instantly connect w/ the GP in this epic way (SYA) and only get bigger and bigger. Pretty sure w/ the old formula UF still would've lost #1 to SYA simply based on SYAs huge sales. Radio obviously wasn't a factor and streaming still wasn't that great until about week 2 of SYA being #1. Plus, UF was simply declining at *exactly the right time and for weeks was #1 by default. Love the song and wish it got the record but it was a very unusually non competitive time. I def. think we're in a day and age that the 19 year old record is now def. on borrowed time. W/ this new formula it benefits songs to have many, many weeks at #1. Look at how many 10+ week songs we've had just in the past 2-3 years. For those who love turnover, you're kind of screwed lol. Sorry to say but even now, SYA has like NO immediate competition. It's already on week 3 at #1 and radio is only first catching up (only 12% of its points last week were due to radio according to Billboard). Long as sales/streaming stay strong enough, radio is only first coming 'hard' to keep this at the top for a long time. Waay too soon to know but w/ nothing noteworthy coming from any mega stars on the horizon (except Britney and Taylors 4th single..all which I doubt will topple SYA), won't be surprised if we're dealing w/ the same drama w/ SYA that we had w/ UF lol. The irony if SYA (the song the prevented UF from toppling OSD) actually is the one to do it or come close! lol

^ I don't understand how one can be predicting the possibility of breaking the record for a song that has just gotten its third week at #1 lmao. Mind you it decreased in sales by 50k per week for two weeks in a row now. Streaming has also inevitably peaked for it. The only thing that will hold it up at this point is airplay, and I'm not so sure that's going to continue getting those 5M+ daily increases for another 7+ weeks...also it is very important to keep in mind that Britney/Iggy are debuting with a new single which has been talked about a lot and much anticipated from the mega fanbases as well as the remix of Taylor's "Bad Blood". Plus, SUAD will be performed on the voice next month, by which time it will be top 5 in airplay and will have continued to gain. And of course one last important thing to consider is he appearance of another SYA-type song which comes out of nowhere (possibly due to a viral video or another death or what have you) and dethrones SYA the same way SYA dethroned UF. So there is more competition than you think and it is unlikely that SYA will beat out each and every one of those competitors and spend 10+ weeks at #1.

Anything is a "legitimate official record" Billboard writes articles that they hope attract an audience. They will print what they think will attract the most attention. A record for most weeks in the top 3 or top 4 is certainly legitimate and certainly official but do people really care? Totally agree. Weeks in the top 3 and stuff like that are records all the same. Even if they're records nobody in the general public cares about, it's still worth talking about for us chart followers. But really in Billboard articles you'd only expect them to talk about records for #1, top 5, top 10, top 20, top 40, top 50 and top 100, because nobody will care about the rest. For example recently I remember people talking about Riptide's chart run and how it was unique. The general public won't care about that since it's quite a specific situation, but it is definitely interesting for us and impressive for the song. As for See You Again, I'm predicting 8-10 weeks at #1. I think it'll be on top for a long time but not as long as Uptown Funk. I can't believe Trap Queen would've been #2 this week and close to #1 if it wasn't for See You Again! Weird thought.
