And now that reclaiming the top spot appears to be definitely out of the question for "Bad Blood", at least we've had our first 1-week-No. 1 in over 2 years. :) Yeah!!! Idr, this is the first instance since When I Was Your Man crowned no.1 for only a single week, and only the second instance since streaming started to be one component.. There've bin three songs that dominated chart for at least 12 weeks since 3/24/2012 but only two songs dominated for only one week. So... what Taylor achieved was rarer than what Wiz Damnass and Charlie Puss did! |

Insane we're in July and have essentially had 2 Hot 100 number one songs for the year. The hot 100 is dated 10 days ahead, so BS was essentially just #1 in 2014. And then BB just snuck one week in.

They make changes all the time without telling anyone. It's all corporate greed and corrupt. Should be a no-brainer by now. I'm not sure it's all corrupt, but I agree Billboard makes too many adjustments. Is the music industry changing that fast where they have to make a change every year or two? In 1991 when Soundscan arrived, I remember Billboard testing their new system for months before they integrated it into the consumer magazine. Seems like now they make an adjustment, go live with it and hope it makes sense. If it doesn't they just keep readjusting. The fact they change these rules and formula all the time just puts their credibily to question. Like, is SYA really the #1 song in the country or are they just using a "wrong" formula again? |

Looks like I was wrong about "Bad Blood" dominating the charts over the summer. As the song drops to #4,the only way it can get to #1 is a vital video or something else like it. 1 week at #1 for "Bad Blood" is better than what "Style" did and is great for a song that is a 4th single off the album.

Streams have led to slower turnover (obviously), and while 17 weeks atop the chart still feels challenging, it is now no longer so far fetched, given UF's 14 week reign on top of 31 weeks in the top 10...

Streams have led to slower turnover (obviously), and while 17 weeks atop the chart still feels challenging, it is now no longer so far fetched, given UF's 14 week reign on top of 31 weeks in the top 10... It does seem that way. Or...because songs can climb so quickly with streaming, viral videos...etc, it will make it even more difficult for a song to break the record. I think a song will break the record of 16 weeks, but it might not necessarily be in consecutive weeks. |

17 weeks at #1 will happen evenetually but I don't think the catalyst is streaming. There have been 28 songs since 1992 that have sepent 10 or more weeks at #1. Prior to that, in the Hot 100 era, there were only two.
Since 1992, 1 or 2 a year.
The frequency has not increased much. In this decade there have only been 5.

The only Diplo productions to have gone Top 10 until this week are "Paper Planes," "Look @ Me Now," and "Too Close," (#justice4climax) so his fourth must be a songwriting entry? Anyone know what it is?

That's probably true.
Over the last 24 years, there have been trends though. Not just in terms of content, but in terms of recurrent longevity and song familiarity fatigue.
In some eras (1998, 2006) 10 weeks at #1 feels almost like an impossibility. Then you have your 1996s, 2002s, 2005s and 2015s when the opposite is true.
I think we are in a time when 15 weeks *feels* possible.

It climbed No. 21 ---> No. 18 on Airplay It fell No. 10 ---> No. 14 on Digital It fell No. 11 ---> No. 22 on Streaming If it keeps falling in the other two metrics, airplay will just be too little, too late at this point. :( |

it's kind of weird seeing just debut now, though, especially since songs like "uptown funk!" have never debuted (or did it have a short run? idk I only really started following the R&B/Hip Hop Billboard charts recently) even though that got some urban airplay

This is a problem moving forward.
I guess a consensus of R&B stations or the label (or yes, Billboard) decided to add it.
Too many songs 'pop-based' songs have charted high on Mainstream R&B and not gotten onto the big chart in the last three years.
Recall Tove Lo was #1 on Rock Songs one week, and removed the next when deemed 'too pop'?
