My Predictions:
Rank Song Sales Airplay Streams Points
1 The Hills - 100-150-18.0 = 43,300 2 Hotline Bling - 125-90-16.0 = 37,200 3 What Do You Mean - 85-120-15.0 = 35,700 4 Can't Feel My Face - 50-115-12.0 = 29,000 5 679 - 55-60-16.0 = 28,400 6 Wildest Dreams - 85-125-7.0 = 27,400 7/8 Stitches - 75-90-10.0 = 26,400 7/8 Locked Away - 65-130-7.0 = 26,200
Hotline Bling should be #2 this week.
Wildest Dreams might crack Top-5 depending on streaming this week. It will definitely get there next week surpassing CFMF or 679 or both.
Locked Away has lost its chances of reaching Top-5.

If Wildest Dreams does its 0.69 discount thingy, being put on more lives, has spotify services, gets a remix version and a lyrics video plus a fan made viral for both...Then ding! The fourth chart-topper of 1989! Now the worst streaming ever almost makes me wanna cry!

Following Where Are U Now and You Know You Like It should help. I want them to re-release Take U There with Kiesza and Missy Elliott. It's quite a commercial song with great crossover potential.

Just looked at the chart topping hits of Billboard 2015 (since December, 2014). There have been eight songs to top the chart so far. An amazing low number if you were to ask me.

If you count songs that hit #1 in 2015, Bad Blood is the only song by a female artist to go to the top of the chart this year. And it was only there for one week. If you count Blank Space, then it's 2, but still Taylor is the only female to go #1 this year.
Only chance I see of another female artist hitting #1 before the end of the year is Adele.

I'm losing faith in that happening. Remember that Bieber had hype building for more than a month, while there's been nary a peep about Ariana's track since early September. Also, it had the benefit of a popular lyric video, a quick start at radio, and a music video launched all within the same week; at least one of those things I don't see happening for Ariana.

Why is Ariana Grande assured a number one debut? The chances are high, but it's definitely not assured. She has proven to have hype back up her first week digital sales as seen with "Problem," and that should be higher now given that her last album secured her many more fans. Airplay should have a nice kick behind it too for that same reason. Do we know the video's release? If it's same day, she'll probably get number one fairly easily. If not, it's going to be tough given "Hotline Bling," "The Hills," and "What Do You Mean?" killing it in all three formats of the chart. We're also not 100% certain on just how well airplay will be for her first week. It'll be big, I'm sure, but it certainly won't be Taylor Swift/Katy Perry big. It might be more in line with how Ellie Goulding's latest did on its first week, and if so, that'll make it a little tough to get that number one debut.

On the other hand, none of the songs you mentioned are very high on any of the three metrics, so the points are overall fairly low, giving Ariana a prime opportunity to debut at #1 if ever there was a chance.

Saying a song nobody's heard yet is guaranteed to debut at #1 is kinda crazy. I think some people on here said the same about Britney's "Pretty Girls" and we all know how that turned out.
If Ariana's song is good it definitely stands a chance, given how well "Problem" did in its first week, but even if it amasses enough points to hit #1 it may do it in its second week if it debuts early due to airplay. Or the song could be a dud and do relatively poorly. Or it could be good and just miss the top. Or Harlem Shake 2.0 could appear and block everything else. Who knows.
Separately -- is it definitive that Adele is releasing new music before the end of the year?

Why is Ariana Grande assured a number one debut? Don't quite know about assured, but it's quite possible. +: Last few hits: Problem, Break Free, Bang Bang (she's got some momentum) Growing fan club (from Nickelodeon and her music) Desire for new music at the top -: Impact of the doughnut incident (if there's any lasting one) The lack of buzz on Focus (in contrast, What Do You Mean was being felt for several weeks before debuting) I agree that it comes down to timing. If she can get Focus up at the start of the week, she should get some airplay based on her recent hits. If Focus has a good video or the song showcases her voice enough, that could help streaming. And if the song appeals enough, there goes sales. If Grande gets the timing down and gets all three elements working for her, she could conceivably debut at the top. If she misses one, perhaps a debut more like Drag Me Down is possible. But if the impact of the doughnuts is greater than we thought, who knows?

I think people have completely forgotten/stop caring about the doughnut thing. People are just using it as an excuse to dislike her at this point.
If she has decent promo/appearances planned for the week, the video out on the Friday/Monday (or at least a lyric video) and radio jumps on it quick (which I can see happening, 5 top 6s in one era, two #1), I think it is easily possible. Drag Me Down didn't really have much hype around it either

Ariana is not that big of a star and also she didn't really have a break at all from making music. This new song comes too soon to be really THAT anticipated.
