Yes. That is exactly what the "holiday/Christmas freeze" is. Wrong, actually. The 'freeze', at least as it's known on pop radio, is the time of year (generally the second half of December leading into January) where pop as a format gets sluggish and stagnant. Playlists (I believe) switch to automated as all the PD's go on holiday, plus there's year-end stuff that cuts into the airplay of currently active songs. In previous years it was much more of an actually 'freeze' where everything came to virtually a standstill, but lately for pop it's been closer to a 'chill' than a straight-up freeze. The Xmas freeze refers to the week on billboard's hot 100 where the chart remained unchanged from the previous week (the "TW" column was the same as the "LW" column). The chart was frozen for the week. Rather than reflect the actual AirPlay and sales readings, which were all warped due to year-end countdowns and Xmas songs AirPlay (limited to a week, once upon a time), they just froze the chart. I have no idea if the hot 100 still does this.

This has burned on me completely now. I'm even skipping when it comes on through my playlist.

The video now has over 600 million views in just over 6 weeks! Now over 700 million views 8 days later! Should get to the 1 billion mark in early-mid January. Anyone know the record for fastest video to 1 billion views?

Taylor Swift's Blank Space was the second fastest with the others mentioned in that Billboard article.

Wow, 1 Billion! How long did it take Blank Space to hit One billion? That was a beautiful video just like Hello. I guess Hello will make it by the end of Jan or Feb.

Just think within 2 weeks all the Christmas songs will be over! It seems like overkill with the Christmas music to me.

Hello just hit #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Play Chart.
Funny how this is sort of the last chart for Adele's Hello to get a #1 on and it is the easiest chart to get a #1 on. It shows how nearly any song is now mixed and goes to dance. It is amazing how many formats this has gone to #1 on!

UAC would be nice but I guess at this point the song has proved itself to be a smash across multiple formats. I guess she will do it all again starting in Jan with WWWY.

So let me get this straight... All this hype, super fast climber on CHR and in the end it will get how many weeks at no. 1 on CHR?

Aren't runs at #1 on CHR pretty short across the board? The turnover the last couple years has been pretty quick.

I think you should also keep in mind that 'Hello' has virtually been running at double speed since it was released. A more 'natural' pace might have seen it take around 8 weeks to hit #1, then spend twice as long at that peak (about 6 weeks maybe). It might even clear out at an accelerated pace too, thanks to 'When We Were Young' already starting its ascent. It's just a really weird situation because we don't generally see an entire chart run crammed into just a few months.

I know what you mean. The whole thing has been unreal so I guess we just need to wait and see. No matter what happens from here on in, Hello has been a force of its own!

Three things definitely need to be considered.
1) "Hello" went from nowhere to everywhere in a matter of days. It did not get the chance to grow organically like most songs do. This means that it will reach its burn rate faster than normal, which lead to it not lasting a long while on top.
2) "Hello" appeals to massive amounts of demographics, and when that is collected together, it makes for huge overall numbers. That doesn't mean individual demographics love it like no other, though. Think about it this way: Song X is your average number one on pop. Song Y is your average number one on pop and also makes the top ten on rhythmic. Which ones has the higher placement on the Hot 100? Song Y. Both of them performed the same on pop, though, because the pop listening demographic liked both songs relatively equally. "Hello" is like Song Y, but obviously on a grander scale since it appears on more than just one format. "Hello"'s callout scores actually do not suggest that it appeals to pop listeners more than the usual number one hit, so it's going to spend a relatively average number of weeks at number one. (Only its favorite score is abnormally high. The rest are normal numbers for a number one hit.)
3) Don't let the wild success of "Hello" overshadow "Sorry." "Sorry" would be a long lasting number one hit in every right too had it not been for "Hello" coming out at the same time.

Crammed performance makes sense when it comes to sales, i.e., this song sold in the first few weeks what would take other (big) hits to sell in 10 weeks. I get that. But that doesn't apply to CHR AirPlay. If you look strictly at CHR AirPlay, this chart has been completely unremarkable other than it's quick rise. It never broke any CHR AirPlay records (did it?), it only managed 4 official weeks at no. 1 (or so it seems) and it's already descending. It's absolutely anticlimactic for a chart watcher.

Look, I get it, but complaining about the chart success of "Hello" isn't cool. Wishing for a more traditional run so it can fit the mold of a "bigger" hit is just unnecessary, IMO. It charged up the chart like a maniac and is a multi-week #1 single. With the freeze coming, it will probably end up with some decent longevity. It also has a follow-up single beginning to scale the chart as well. It also has been viewed about three-quarters-of-a-billion times in less than 2 months on YouTube plus 250 million Spotify streams plus audience impressions from other formats plus parodies plus etc. etc - a slight burn on the track is inevitable no matter how massive Adele is. Also important to keep in mind how strong competition is from Bieber. Hell, with the incredible start "Hello" got digital-sales-wise, it's a f**king wonder that "Sorry" hasn't overtaken it, even for a day, on iTunes.
I understand that "Hello" doesn't look AS big only looking at its CHR run as it does on the whole but it just seems a bit petty to knock it for losing spins after 4 weeks at #1.

Had to laugh at the bolded part. "Only 4 weeks" what a joke. Come on. "Hello" has done an absolutely phenomenal job on radio and yeah, it didn't break any CHR record, but who cares? It was still massive. You mean to tell me you haven't been impressed even a little since it's release? It was only a matter of time before it started falling, but don't think it's going anywhere; Hello is going to hold on well into the new year airplay-wise.

Adele truly set the bar high.

Only it does make sense when you think about it. The song reached a quick peak everywhere in a matter of days and radio was slow to catch on (note that even though radio was behind on Hello, the song still had a warp speed rise to #1 - that's how fast it caught on everywhere else). So when you think about it, it has been everywhere already since its first day of release, which was two months ago? The only reason why it got 4 weeks at #1 was because it didn't debut at #1 on radio the way it did everywhere else. If it had, it would be spending it's 8th and final week there and about to drop down only now. Also note that as you said, you can't condense an airplay chart run the way you can a sales one so you can't make a short chart run on radio look impressive the way a shortened sales chart run can. Out of context, Hello on pop radio isn't an event hit. Within context, pop radio was simply trying to keep pace.

Great comments on how the charts work. You all know so much about them. I think WWWY will explode in Jan and replace Hello near or at the top. Either way Adele is going to be on radio a lot in 2016!
