Looks like, unless PILLOWTALK pulls a SYA magically staying on top for the next couple months, Stressed Out will be #2 by the March 5th chart. Hopefully LY/SO won't be like the Blank Space/Take Me To Church scenario just over a year ago...

If Zayn Malik reaches number one with "Pillowtalk", I believe he will become only the second act to score their first chart topper on the Hot 100 as a solo act after reaching number two as a member of a group. Belinda Carlisle's first number one song was "Heaven Is A Place on Earth" in 1987. In 1982, as a member of The Go-Go's, she peaked at #2 with "We Got The Beat".
Are there any other examples?

NSync peaked at #1 with It's Gonna Be Me.... does that rule Justin out?

NSync peaked at #1 with It's Gonna Be Me.... does that rule Justin out? Yes, in that limited way the question was asked since it was about their "first chart topper." Justin's first was as part of a group. Also, then Justin wouldn't even be the first as plenty of people have had a #1 as part of a group and then had solo #1s (Diana Ross, George Michael, etc).

NSync peaked at #1 with It's Gonna Be Me.... does that rule Justin out? I was looking for artists who never had a number one hit as a member of a group (specifically peaking at #2), but did top the chart as a solo act.

I figured, which is exactly why i said what i said in response to Mark's guess of Justin Timberlake. It indeed rules him out, as NSync peaked at #1.
I guess I should have quoted Mark's post to make this more obvious? lol.

Gonna be another exciting week on the Hot 100. 2016 is turning out to be a good year so far and it's just gonna get better.
If Zayn debuts at #1 this week, will he be able to maintain that #1 the following weeks or will it fall and linger in the Top 10 for weeks?

Are you thinking Billboard now divides sales by 10, and streaming by 1000? I was thinking maybe sales /9 and streaming /1000 was possible too... still not too drastic of a change points-wise - just a little higher overall. They did say minor or whatever, so maybe 10 makes more sense. Gathering all the available data from last week for various songs (From Billboard, Kworb, Mediabase etc) and matching them with their respective ranks, yields this formula or something close to it: Sales/9 + Airplay/10,000 + Streams/1,200

I think it's specifically that the group's highest chart hit was #2, and then they went solo and hit #1.
I looked up Gwen Stefani and Fergie - both of their bands hit #3 before they hit #1 as a solo artist (though BEP hit #1 after). Almost but not quite.

The next update will include those songs. Sorry :(

It just occurred to me that the reason Billboard would adjust the formula so notably at a non-year-end-point is the RIAA. The original standard of 1:100 has been adjusted thanks to the rise of streaming to 1:150, which that updated formula reflects.

And the fact that you have analyzed all the available data and that it matches up makes it believable.

Just curious but was there something that helped Stressed Out take off? Tear in my heart was great, I wish it'd fared better.

Looks like, unless PILLOWTALK pulls a SYA magically staying on top for the next couple months, Stressed Out will be #2 by the March 5th chart. Hopefully LY/SO won't be like the Blank Space/Take Me To Church scenario just over a year ago... Idk what the BS/TMTC scenario is, but is it like the Uptown Funk/Thinking Out Loud scenario?
