I have been saying since last year that this was Adele's Born this way era, and I'm glad people are now starting to get the comparison. Hello was huge out of gate (just like BTW) but it didn't have a lot of staying power, people got tired of the song quickly and so much they don't even care about the following singles.

I'm still shocked by the fact that "Stitches" outlasted "Hello" and will do the same with "Sorry". That's why I maintain the argument that Hello's chart performance is underwhelming. For a song debuted with such lofty points and literally crushed any other song in its first week, 10 weeks at no.1 and 18 weeks in top 10 (its short-lived radio and streaming are both responsible and it just doesn't have the vibe and worth for meme and its audience is not so streaming-friendly in a longer view) are both embarrassing. Songs like Candle In the Wind 1997, I Will Always Love You, Shake It Off or even See You Again all smashed their respective first week no.1 and got some insurmountable numbers, but they're more convincing of their staying power (12-14 weeks at no.1 or 24 weeks in top 10). Hello gives me the impression that if it's not for Adele absent for about 4 years and her last album was the no.1 album of all-time, it wouldn't have stood a chance of becoming a hit that has any longevity even though critics generally like the song. It's not that surprising to see that WWWY peaked at no.14 and still no idea of when it's official video's finally gonna be out. I think maybe 25 is kind of like Born This Way of Adele, and her star power is gonna decline even though the album sold that much in its first week. But who knows? "I Will Always Love You"'s chart run isn't as impressive as MANY songs either. LoL Once it left it's peak of Num.1 for 14 weeks. Sold over 4 million physical singles, was played to death from day 1, had Parody's done of it, sold millions of an album, and was talked about EVERYWHERE much like "Hello" it dropped pretty quickly. I think I would rather "Stiches" chart run though........

I think it's important to keep in mind the unparalleled enormousness of 25 during its first 2 months - it greatly exceeded that of Born This Way's. And while I can't predict the future, I have a good feeling there's a couple more sizable hits from 25 still on the way. They aren't pushing anything at the moment, but time will tell.

Over 7 million copies of 25 sold, as well as over 5 million copies of Hello sold is in no way embarrassing. Those first few weeks were literally so massive that it hit an overexposure ceiling. Its first week along would be worth about 4 weeks at #1 for the average song, and it kept up with doubling or tripling the points for another few weeks. When the totals are that high for the first few weeks, it's bound to crash later. As it is, I'm pretty sure Hello is still crushing Stitches' chart run overall.

Yeah, I'm sure Adele is kicking herself, wishing she was in Shawn Mendes's shoes.

Except 25 is still top ten four months after release and has already far outsold Born This Way. The second single did not die off less than a month after release. The lead single was also a long standing number one with enormous cultural impact. That's just not the Born This Way era at all. I think I would rather "Stiches" chart run though........ That's just incomprehensibly absurd. Stitches is nowhere close to Hello in terms of chart success. Longevity doesn't necessarily mean it was bigger. There's so much more to a song's chart life than simple stays like peak and weeks inside some arbitrary position.

It's like saying I'd rather be given $10,000 a week for an entire year than be paid $1,000,000 all at once.

That's why I mentioned how IWALY and Hello sold millions of singles, sold albums, had parodys done of it, had the world talking, held sales records etc etc. But, yes I want "Stiches" chart run over "IWALY and Hello"'s> LoL I believe that was a song that was pointed out. I was using it of more of an example. Like so what it lasted all this much time on the hot 100. I think I will stick with the chart runs etc of IWALY and Hello that was Num.1 for weeks but dropped quickly.

Even then, with ry4n's example, you would only get paid $520,000 over the course of the year. Why would you want to make half a million dollars when you can make a million?

Adele's lead single spending ONLY 10 weeks at #1 should not be cause for alarm. Adele's follow-up not being an out of the box #1 smash should not be cause for alarm.
Up front sales records for the single that it set does not imply to me that it should also set longevity records
'25' has been a consistent seller and will continue to be. It will probably end up on par with '21' '29' (or whatever the next album is) will do well too.
Adele - Lady Gaga comparison lacks a couple things
- '25' is still a consistent seller even without multiple #1 hits; Gaga's album was not - Lady Gaga's audience is younger and relies more on #1 hits to move albums than an Adele would - Adele's audience may not be downloading/streaming the song just to push it up the Hot 100 and may not even care. Sometimes you don't need single to move 10 million albums.

You can choose to have a reliable consistent income for a year. If you run out, another cheque will come in a few days. Or you could choose to receive a considerably larger sum of money all at once... but then you'd have to worry for 12 months that it's going to run out.

And it's not like Hello had bad longevity either. 18 weeks in the top ten is nothing to sneeze at. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that is in fact longer than Stitches, the song you're comparing it to, spent in the top 10 (not to mention a much, much longer run in the top 3) :kii:

There's no way Stitches was top 10 for 18 weeks :O
EDIT: 17 weeks in top ten. I didn't think it was there that long. I guess it's because I wasn't really paying attention to the Hot 100 after October until the beginning of this year.

Some examples of big songs and their weeks in the top 10
When I Was Your Man - 16 Radioactive - 20 Can't Hold Us - 17 Wrecking Ball - 16 Fancy - 17 Problem - 16 Am I Wrong - 14 Blank Space - 17 Love Me Like You Do - 15 See You Again - 19 Bad Blood - 13 Stitches - 18
Blurred Lines spent 21, Dark Horse 22, All Of Me 23 and Happy 22. Considering how HUGE Hello was for the start of the run (and how big it still is), I see nothing wrong with 18 weeks. This also all depends on what else was in the top 10..

I enter and see people comparing the chart run of Stitches to that of Hello. All I can do is wonder how people can really still be talking about this comparison. Hello is under a chart run handicap, that's for sure. But that handicap is simply a result of how overwhelmingly massive the song was in its first 6 weeks, and even beyond. 25's unparalleled sales performance did not help the situation either and I for one was actually a bit surprised at how well Hello's sales managed to hold up even with its parent album selling so consistently well.

Hello really was a huge hit, but when something like this happens and a song is already massive out of the gate and dies out not too long after that, it's hard to know for certain how much of its success is due to people actually connecting to the song and how much is just due to hype. Stitches is nowhere near Hello's success, to the point that the comparison is almost laughable, but we do know Stitches got there mostly for the song itself and its staying power is a sign of its reception by the audience.

I think people expect more from Hello, since it is a massive hit. Even Sorry is able to wait for Hello to dip so it can reach #1 (and now having 21 weeks in top 10). Comparing songs that had around 10 weeks at #1 this decade: See You Again (12 weeks @ #1) | 19 | All About That Bass (8 weeks @ #1) | 25 | Happy (10 weeks @ #1) | 22 | Royals (9 weeks @ #1) | 23 | Blurred Lines (12 weeks @ #1) | 21 | One More Night (9 weeks @ #1) | 21 | Call Me Maybe (9 weeks @ #1) | 23 | Somebody That I Used to Know (8 weeks @ #1) | 23 | We Found Love (10 weeks @ #1) | 23 | Tik Tok (9 weeks @ #1) | 20 |
I guess 18 weeks for a 10-weeks-#1 song is a bit less, isn't it?

I guess 18 weeks for a 10-weeks-#1 song is a bit less, isn't it? As has been pointed out several times already, it is nearly impossible for Hello to have longevity like the songs you listed when the song reached an extremely high oversaturation that none of those songs ever achieved. There is so much more to a chat run than just peak and weeks. Point totals are important, and Hello had several weeks where its points were 2-4 times as large as any of those songs ever reached in one week.

Work From Home 13. Dangerous Woman 14. One Call Away 15. Hands to Myself 32. Team 40. Be Alright Good prediction! I wish Work From Home can go to top 10 the week after this. Such a solid track! Work's gonna end up 7-10 weeks at no.1? 8 or 9 seem ideal for the song. I hope Stressed Out at least collect 20 weeks in top 10, Love Yourself looking to get 23 weeks out of its super powerful airplay. Would be good for ITAPII to peak in top 5 for it's much more evocative and moving than 7 Years (I now think See You Again is better than this) If Sorry falls down the high tier this week then it's almost an ancient curse in effect on "21 weeks" (similar to the "14 weeks" at no.1 mass pile). Would be ideal for Dangerous Woman to top the chart quality-wise speaking, or lease peak in top 3 and higher than NO
