If Purple Rain hits #1 (though I don't think it's very likely), then would that make it the longest gap between a song's release date and the week it peaked at #1 in Hot 100 history?

Biggest I can think of is Madonna - Express Yourself which I believe was released in the 80's and reached #1 in 2011.

I would think that would be the longest gap. Can't imagine any previous #1's that were released 30 years before hitting #1. And I wouldn't say it's unlikely, as "Purple Rain" has MASSIVE sales this week (it's already Monday and it still has a more than 2-to-1 lead over "Panda", "One Dance" and "7 Years" and I'm pretty sure it's getting pretty substantial streaming too (pretty sure the AVI live performance counts since it's categorized under Music) so I would not at all be surprised if it hit #1. I'm rooting for it to be #1 next week (since it obviously won't result in "Panda" peaking at #2).

I think that might be the record. So, Panda might not get a lot of weeks at #1. The next few number ones should be Purple Rain and One Dance. Formation could maybe do it, but let's see how it holds up during the week. Meghan Trainor's song is struggling right now on Pop radio, so it might not return to the top 5 :(

Good to see so many Prince songs, but anyone else think it's kinda ridiculous that the best-selling song of the week can only hit #17 on the Hot 100 without airplay or streams? It's clearly more popular than that.

It's a joke, because one of the songs that hit #1 in 2011 sounds like "Express Yourself", and the artist who sung it has been frequently compared to Madonna. EDIT: Oh, you already caught the joke. Never mind.

I don't think an extra day of sales in this sales frame would get it to #1. Top 10/5 maybe, but still not enough for #1.

Yeah, you're right. I did try to be somewhat vague with my explanation, but I guess it wasn't vague enough.

Same thing happened to "Out Of The Woods", which was #1 on Digital Songs and only debuted at #18 on the Hot 100, despite a full week.

That's the only one that hit #1 in 2011 I can think of that sounds remotely close to EY...

Ravi With the sales estimates on kworb, I would love to see your top 10 predictions for 5/14 Will need to work on Top-10, but here goes the Top-5.... 1. Purple Rain - 390-5-7.0 = 49,700 2. Panda - 90-50-38.0 = 46,700 3. One Dance - 100-65-30.0 = 42,600 4. When Doves Cry - 260-5-12.0 = 39,400 5. 7 Years - 75-135-17.0 = 36,000 Much could still change.... So Purple Rain hasn't got the #1 locked.... Panda is not giving up without a fight!

Lyrics and music much older than that have been to #1 before.
The Byrds hit #1 in the sixties with lyrics taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the bible
Beethoven's 5th hit #1 in the 1970s

It'd be weird and cool if Purple Rain reached #1 after a #2 peak in its original chart run. Also hope 1999 can reach the top 40. Has to be a record for # of times a song re-entered the chart.

And, here are Prince's re-entering Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tracks:Position, Title (Original Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Peak, Year) No. 5, "Purple Rain" (No. 4, 1984) No. 8, "When Doves Cry" (No. 1, eight weeks, 1984) No. 12, "Kiss" (No. 1, four weeks, 1986) No. 13, "Little Red Corvette" (No. 15, 1983) No. 15, "Let's Go Crazy" (No. 1, one week, 1984) No. 17, "1999" (No. 4, 1982) And there's my question answered.. he and Beyonce are gonna dominate this chart next week.

k non-Christmas songs then. It's probably a song which kept dropping out and re-entering the bottom half of the Hot 100. I think I've seen songs that have charted in the 90s (chart position not decade), dropped out, re-entered in the 90s, dropped out, etc.

I think he mean top 40, still not a record though, Thriller has come back a couple times, thanks to Halloween (although I guess only one top 40 re-entry)
