Eh, it's not just pop music, though. The same thing has happened in TV and especially in movies. It's really more about advertisers and who they target (i.e. people who spend money). You say this as if I insinuated it was just pop music. I was speaking specifically about pop music and even more specifically about Madonna and her possible role in it. Of course there's more to it than that... everything is sexualized at this point. I was disagreeing with your general point about it all coming down to sexualization, though. As in, I think it's broader than that. Disney and its offspring (from Disney shows and movies to their actors becoming pop stars, as an example) aren't about sexualization in their initial success. But advertisers know that market is very lucrative so we get not only TV shows, but music, movies, and even merchandise. We have a lot of things in all forms of entertainment that cater to that demo, and while some of it may be sexualized (usually when the stars age into a new demo), not all of it is. My point was simply to say I think it's more broadly about advertisers (and studios/labels) reaching demos that spend money, which in some cases does including 'sexifying' things, but not all. The demos that advertisers cater to now are not the same as the ones they catered to 40 years ago.

Man, that maximum airplay peak is steadily creeping lower and lower for huge hits. It went from 270-300m AI for songs like Happy and All Of Me, down to 240m for Uptown Funk, then 210-215m for Hello, and now around 190m for Can't Stop The Feeling and One Dance. Did radio stations change something lately? Are they trying to avoid overplaying songs now? I'd be curious if spin counts are actually lower or if it's that there are just fewer people listening to radio stations. Or maybe we just don't have as many songs that appeal to about 6 or 7 different formats like "Happy" and "All of Me" did?

Excited to see Unsteady selling reasonably well. Hope it hits the Top 40 soon!
I really have to say though, all those sales really look pathetic. It's insane how sharply sales have been replaced with streaming.

That is the problem, people only want to hear the hits. All over the world people have become programmed like robots. When I turn the radio on I would rather hear a brand new song than one that's on every hour on the hour. I will be called old again for this ,but things were better. Back in the late 80s when I was a teenager you could call a station and asked them to play an album tracks and they would. Now you're lucky if they will play the latest Madonna song because she is old. Hi, did you just jump out of my mind. I like to discover new music at times when I turn on the radio as well. Back in the 80's Dj's played album tracks sometimes and I loved it. i'm from Boston and so was my favorite Donna Summer. The head Dj and future PR director loved Donna and would play all her singles and some album tracks as if they were hits. I know exactly how you feel about radio and how ANY fun of it has been sucked out. Yes back in the day you really did have a small chance of getting your request heard. I understand they didn't play all requests but you were heard. What a great time to be a music fan. It's great to have almost everything at our fingertips but there's a certain fun that's missing now. Sorry for the rant. LoL??????

Funny how when I want to hear a song, instead of calling a radio station, I just play the song I want to hear. Instantly.
This nostalgia for a time when it was HARDER to hear the music you want to hear defies all logic. What the hell is the point of these "it was so much better back then" posts?

What is boosting this song? There's a new version selling well from the Me Before You soundtrack. Clever: nabs both the music-casual, movie-frequent audience and music completionists who get everything from a band.

In a way having to work for something makes it better, to me. We don't fully appreciate things that come too easily.

Having worked in radio in the 80s (and in Boston!) I can confirm that no major radio station played any songs you called in and requested since the early 1970s. The call-lines were and always have been a joke since 'scientific research = ratings' came into play in the 70s. They were there as a marketing gimmick pre internet that no paid PD would ever use as a programming mechanism.

* CSTF again looks to be stuck at #3 behind Panda. DLMD should get a new peak. * "Don't Mind" will be in close fight with JLF for the #10 spot.

I think the main point westlife and others were getting at was there was more variety back then. Certainly, NO ONE can argue with that?

I think the main point westlife and others were getting at was there was more variety back then. Certainly, NO ONE can argue with that? More variety in what? If you mean Top 40 radio specifically, then yes, I'm willing to concede that point, since that was before the fragmentation that has resulted in formats like Rhythmic, Hot AC, etc. But if you mean more variety in general? Nope, I disagree there. I also think it's odd to see complaints about people hanging onto the same songs and listening to them over and over and lack of variety and blah blah blah. I mean, wasn't the entire concept of Top 40 radio generated from the observation that young folk tended to play the same few jukebox hits over and over again? (Oversimplification for emphasis, but you get the idea.) The only real difference is that, now, with the rise of streaming, we can see exactly which songs people want to hang onto, as opposed to which songs programmers think people want to hang onto.

^ Yeah, it is surprising that even without the video, Drake is getting almost twice as many streams as CSTF, and the video for that is already out!

And if the One Dance video is amazing - the sky is the limit for the song's weeks at #1 this summer. If it doesn't need a video to be #1 - which clearly it doesn't - they can take their sweet time. Smart move.
He may have waited a long time for his first lead #1, but this thing is turning into a BEAST of a chart topper.

Is there a video coming? And, really, why release it now when he has two new songs going to various formats?

Damn, CSTF just can't catch a break after its debut week (as in returning to the top 2)...well at least it got a week on top and DLMD should reach a new peak this week

The CSTF video is horrifyingly bad so no wonder it hasn't gathered views as much as the song itself has sales.

Well if Panda decreases fast enough it could back in the top 2 but the second that happens. I guarantee the One Dance video comes out and a week later the remix is dropped.

Music video for TIWYCF still coming soon, according to Calvin Harris officially on Twitter. Harris already announced this on Twitter two weeks ago. Hopefully get for new peak for TIWYCF after music video release by late June, July or August when it became a Top 10 hit already.
