81 on Metacritic (so far). Her last 3 albums got 65, 69, and 70.

Yeah, I will side with the unpopular opinion and say I prefer the “Delirium”, pop Ellie so the EG.0 side of this release appeals to me more. To me, “Delirium” pushed her sound to the mainstream yet still maintained eccentricities and quirks of her earlier albums. I gave the rest of the album a spin and it’s too much of a step back in her sound to me personally. It also seemed like most tracks blended into one another too much.
I will keep “Start”, “Power”, and “How Deep Is Deep” from side A on Spotify though.

This is my favorite female album this year Love I'm Given, How Deep Is Too Deep and Power this is nowhere near Fetch the Bolt Cutters or Future Nostalgia but I would put it head to head with Chromatica. probably like an 8 or 8.5 for me.

I'm impressed with her performance here, some really powerful album tracks, one of the better albums of the year, and will definitely be re-listening several times throughout the week.

I'd tempered my expectations, but I'm very impressed by this! Not up to the level of her last two, but very strong in its own right. I appreciate the more minimal aspects and how "grown up" it is. I need another listen to pick out highlights besides HDITD but it's very cohesive and better than some of the snippets indicated separately.
She is a very underrated and skilled singer, and extremely deceptively versatile in the amount of material she has successfully carried through her career.

Another great female pop record this year. The girls are not playing this year! BLEACH and BRIGHTEST BLUE are fantastic.

Man she really subverted expectations with this album and was trolling us until Power dropped
Also if you asked How Deep Is Too Deep still has ownership over my ass

"Brightest Blue" review:
Before I listened, a lot of people said that this side of the album was boring, but I really don’t find it boring at all. I find "Brightest Blue" to be more personal and slowed down from her previous album. Ellie was able to keep this album from making me wanna take a nap and instead, she kept me intrigued! Most of the songs on here, have amazing writing and production. This to me was a highlight of this side.
Favorite tracks:
Power How Deep Is Too Deep Love I’m Given New Heights Bleach Flux
Overall ranking 7.5/10
"EG.0" review
This side of the album was really good as well! I enjoyed pretty much all songs on here. It was less personal and more fun. I liked how most of the tracks with featured artist really suited Ellie’s voice. I wish Ellie would have added at least 1 or 2 solo songs to this side. I find that production really came through in this part of the album.
Favorite tracks:
Slow Grenade Close To Me Hate Me
Overall ranking: 8/10
Conclusion: Ellie Goulding created an amazing album with both sides. She exceeded my expectations with this project. I enjoyed how one side was more personal to Ellie and the other side was fun and more like "Delirium".
I definitely recommend this album!
Overall ranking (for both sides): 7.75/10

Projected to debut with 15-18k SPS (7-8k sales). Considering her biggest US hit off the album was largely driven by radio and happened, what, a year and a half before the album, I'm not shocked. I'm more interested in seeing how her numbers stack up in the UK & rest of Europe at this point.

As long as her label doesn't drop her, I'll be happy. I love the album.

I like this more than Halcyon, but still undecided on how I feel about it vs. Delirium. Despite her feelings about it, it was such a strong body of work, especially given the seemingly overbearing length. That said, Brightest Blue DEFINITELY feels more authentically Ellie than Delirium, so I get why people find it stronger. I feel like the more time I spend with it, the more I will love it even more than Delirium. I can't speak for Lights other than the title track because I didn't care about Ellie until Halcyon. Also, since Ellie didn't even bother splitting Brightest Blue and EG.0 into two distinct discs, I will lump them together when doing my ranking. Spoiler alert: Sorry, not sorry, but, for the most part, EG.0 songs are better than Brightest Blue. She just really works well in the context of these pop songs because her voice is so distinct. She can never be TRULY generic, so I wish her diehards would stop resisting and admit to themselves where her true strength lies. Either she needs to give me all of EG.0 or an album full of Joy, Atlantis, Tides, and Anything Can Happens. If she can successfully blend both on one album, all the better. But, for whatever reason, she doesn't seem capable.
Edit: As I went back to listen to New Heights and Love I'm Given, I had to put 'spekt on their names. I still think Slow Grenade and Close To Me are those bitches, but yeah, Worry About Me and Hate Me are in the middle of the pack now. This album is VERY good.
Anyway:
1. Tides (I don't know how she manages to top herself with songs that really put me over the edge of...delirium, but...here we are. Her best song. Period. Not even up for debate.) 2. Slow Grenade (should be a smash, honestly, but radio doesn't love Lauv, for some reason) 3. Close To Me 4. How Deep Is Too Deep 5. Love I'm Given 6. New Heights 7. Worry About Me (that bassline SLAPS and I don't know Blackbear other than him being Mike Posner's boyfriend, but he sounds good on this. I also like how they maintained some of the chorale moments from Overture.) 8. Hate Me 9. Bleach 10. Brightest Blue 11. Power 12. Flux 13. Start 14. Woman 15. Ode To Myself 16. Overture 17. Cyan 18. Wine Drunk

Uuggjjj I can't wait to play this album but I won't have time to experience it the way I want to until the weekend. Is it really that good? Where does it rank among her previous albums? I really want this to be either sth completely new for her or a Halcyon continuation.

Universal is CANCELLED. My sh*t still hasn't shipped yet. She did a little sneak peek of the box set though and it looks so purty.
As for the "which Ellie is better" discussion. I love the moody atmospherics of this and Halcyon. The pop maximalism of Delirium is also ace, that album was a BEAST at 25 tracks and I really only dislike one (sorry, "I Do What I Love" is a goddamn mess). But I'm also here for the lightness/airiness of Bright Lights too. She can serve me whatever she wants.

It's relieved to know she's still doing fine in her home country. I wonder what they would push there as her next single.

Her live performances this era have been fantastic. She has really grown as a vocalist. Very nimble and a strong technique. Also, Love I'm Given is such a banger.

They murdered that performance. She's grown so much as a vocalist. There are moments on this album and in recent live performances where she'll do a little run or an adlib and I'm like OKAY ELLIE, I didn't realize you were gonna be that girl but I'm here for it. Crazy as it sounds, I want an R&B album from her so bad.

I finally got the vinyl the other day and gave it a listen yesterday (I purposely waited for the vinyl to be my first listen). I liked the sound of it as a whole. I also liked knowing that all the poppier singles would follow at the end. That’s something I enjoyed with Delirium too - all those hit bonus tracks that help wrap up the listening experience until I got used to the album and didn’t need them anymore.
Anyway, I need to dive into it more to pick out more specifics but I did like what I heard. It sounded like a tamer Halcyon. Less theatrics but still there with the atmosphere.
