I played Damita Jo in full last night and gave it a reevaluation - I think my opinion of it was seriously tainted by how challenging it was to be a fan that era. With time and distance, it's a pretty strong album; in fact, in many ways, it's better than AFY. It was rare then - a little less rare now - to find such a prominent and mainstream work of erotica from a Black woman. Janet got a lot of flack in the early 2000's for the more sexual aspects of her catalogue, but that was very much an important aspect of her life that she explored through her music. I would argue she was very much a trendsetter and ahead of her time. Beyonce's self-titled and songs like WAP would not exist without the likes of janet. and Damita Jo. I've always thought Damita Jo is better than AFY. DJ isn't top tier Janet, but it belong in the level below and is a more consistent effort than AFY. My faves are Like You Don't Love Me, Island Life, R&B Junkie, and All Nite. Put Your Hands On should have made the album.

You just made me start listening to Damita Jo right now while working. Haven't in a LONG time! Let's see how it goes. I can't hardly remember songs from it. btw, looking at the cover... I can't recall if that cover had already been shown before the Super Bowl. The album came out 2 months after the controversial incident. Unfortunately, it didn't do it for me. Yes of course I remember I loved so much All Nite back in the day and still do. It reminded me how I didn't like Just A Little While as first single. I had to check the video because I didn't remember it at all. It reminded me how I didn't like I Want You as single either. And unfortunately, how the rest of the album left me back then and still do without many highlights. It kinda' bores me. Yes, it is pleasant to listen to, but it ends up kind of samey to my ears after a while. I LOVE R&B Junkie and would've loved it as single, but i guess they didn't because it was perhaps too similar to All For You?? Of course I still LOVE Janet anyway and would go see her in concert again and I can't wait for her next album. I guess being and 80s guy that started with Control, it's hard to match my love and attachment to all Control to Velvet Rope eras. I really don't find this album that strong. I wonder how it really would've performed commercially without the Super Bowl scandal and the Little While single leaking...

There's not much variety among its songs, so the end results feel very lackluster. I never fully connected with all of the songs on Damita Jo like I did with her other albums preceding it. It's my least fave of her 2000s output. I think it's terribly overrated on this board. It has a similar vibe to Madonna's Erotica, but I always thought Erotica is a much better album than Damita Jo in EVERY step of the way. Love the majority of the songs on it. It's everything that I wish Damita Jo could be. I do love R&B Junkie and All Nite, but there's not a single song on Damita Jo that could ever match up with Erotica's highs like Deeper and Deeper, Rain, Bad Girl, Waiting, Words, Secret Garden, Where All Life Begins, and In This Life. Unlike Damita Jo, I love how Erotica has a good mixture of different emotions to feel...sad, lust, desire, healing, and heartache.

Damita Jo is her best album of the ‘00s. I truly spun it every day for months after it released and still listen often today.

DJ is easily the best album of her 2000s run. The sequencing and flow is everything!!

For me AFY is her best 00s album, but DJ is brilliant in its own right and I just LOVE it. I agree that there's basically no killer song on it—that one big highlight that just stands out, you know... the way "All For You," "Together Again" and "That's The Way Love Goes" do on their parent albums—but every track, pretty much, is strong and all work together really well. Such a great album.
And, for the record, it's not just on this board that people revere it. On Janet's fan boards DJ is generally viewed as her best post-TVR record. Unbreakable is also seen as a solid album, as far as her post-TVR albums go, but I've noticed the majority of Janet's stans, based on her fan boards always, would prefer if the new album isn't anything like that. From what I've seen they don't like that the bangers and big dance uptempos were missing from that record.

Co-signing with Dreams, I always did considered AFY to be her best 00s album as well because I feel that it has a lot more highs/standout tracks that I'm always going back to.
I just think it had an overall variety of stronger crop of banger songs and better slow jams.
My gripe with Damita Jo is just that it lacks consistency for me. There are a handful tracks I would always skip over. With AFY, it's only 1. It doesn't make much difference to me that it's also valued outside the Pulse forums. My opinion still stands that I think it's a largely forgettable album with immense filler-ish tracks and bad tracks about her pussy lol.

What's the 1 skip on AFY? Other than her mixtape (20 YO), AFY has the most skips for me. Somewhere between 3-5 (depending on my mood).

Would You Mind, but I l have always love the majority of the tracks on All For You. As for 20 Y.O., I always thought it was a VAST improvement from Damita Jo and I actually find it hugely underrated. Love that it was so much lighter and the songs really felt like it brought the old Janet back to life. I enjoyed many of the tracks on it. The only track I didn't care for was "This Body". Damita Jo is her only album that has the most skips from me. My least faves are My Baby, Like You Don't Love Me, Warmth, Moist, and Thinkin' Bout My Ex. All incredibly dull, uninspiring, monotonous tracks that I think runs down the quality of the album, imo. I think the album would have been a much more stronger, consistent album if she had left them out entirely, and kept Put Your Hands On and Could This Be Love in their place.

Damita Jo is a vibe. I enjoy listening to it from start to finish.
The introduction is where it really shines. "Looking For Love" sets the mood. "Damita Jo" is a bop, I like how she is feeling herself. "Sexhibition" is playful and the production is top notch.
I think "All Nite" is that big hit that every album has. I also enjoy the ending sequence of "Moist", "Truly", "SloLove" and the lead.

Damn...I wish it could have been with Mary J. instead of with *cough cough* Justin. Would have been a far more interesting lineup instead. Hell...could have brought in Beyoncè in to that mix just like when all three graced the cover on Essence magazine decades ago.

Of the explicit sex tracks on DJ I'm only a fan of "Moist" and that's mainly down to the production (it gives me soothing, jazzy summer vibes) bu one big disappointment for me on the album is "Thinkin' Bout My Ex". She finally worked with Babyface after all these years (and unfortunately after his prime era as a songwriter/producer, but still) and all they could come up with was that? The bridge ain't half bad but all the rest 🤦♂️ and those lyrics
At the shopping mall or the movies I'm thinkin' 'bout my ex At the restaurant while I'm eating I'm thinkin' 'bout my ex
gorl...

"Thinkin Bout My Ex" was super corny and weak as hell. I'm not a fan of naming and lamenting song titles after your exes. I wish the international bonus tracks were on the main album. They're much better than the majority of the tracks that made it on the album.

The Best Things in Life Are Free was added to her official YouTube channel. Not sure how recent this was but I know it wasn't available last summer.

Janet passed 6 million monthly listeners for the first time (I believe) on Spotify.

Friendly reminder that this is one of her best remixes and would have been a massive cross-format smash if sent to radio in 1993/1994.

I hope this don’t what she meant by “going out with a bang”. Announce that tour!

I heard "Runaway" while grocery shopping yesterday and a smile spread across my face :)
Also, "Where Are You Now" was a Top 30 Radio Songs hit in 1993 on unsolicited Pop and Rhythmic airplay. I've always preferred it more than "Again"
Of the 17 songs from that era, only 4 did not chart somewhere domestically or internationally: Funky Big Band, This Time, The Body That Loves You, and One More Chance.

I hope this don’t what she meant by “going out with a bang”. Announce that tour! It was confirmed by her team that she's not actually retiring and was misconstrued regarding that on the documentary. In fact from what I remember reading (I think it was on people.com that her rep gave a statement to?) she intends to put out several more albums.

Well seeing as it takes her 7+ years to release an album, yeah I expect her to only release a few more lol.

Who knows? Mariah has picked up in activity now that Roc and Roe are over 10. Maybe Janet will pick up the pace a little when Eissa gets a little older and more independent.
If Madonna can be out here showing her ass on Instagram in her 60s, Janet can still make music. Though I could see her doing a Tina Turner-style farewell tour in her late 60s and actually retire.

Has Mariah really picked it up, though? She's only released 1 studio album since 2014, and it only had 11 songs. She wrote a memoir and has done some other random songs/projects, but the past 8 years have been a really slow time from her in terms of newly recorded music.
