Well, that was a thing. Sorry guys, I wasnβt impressed with the documentary. All it did for me was open up old wounds I thought had been closed. The way they treated this women was worse than I thought being in my teens at the time.
Iβm glad they shed light on Les Moonvesβ participation in all this but what about the nasty things Justin said while riding on her demise? Also, canβt believe they just let the head of Clear Channel say there was no blacklisting. The narrative was in our hands, put up some text before he speaks says βmany fans believe Janet was blacklistedβ or something, prior to letting him spill his lies, and donβt get me started on the doc giving Justin the last word at the end; sickening.
Anyway, excited for JANETβs doc next year.

What I enjoyed?
- My 5 second appearance towards the end!
- Giving a background of Janet's career. Her achievements and longevity are highlighted. Also, some aspects like self-esteem and pressure to be perfect were touched on nicely. I love how they discussed her TV and music career early on. She really is a pioneer (especially for young black women) and one of the few to successfully transition from child star to superstar recording artist for decades! - Interviewing relatives of Janet as well as those who worked on the Superbowl halftime show. Everyone was neutral.
- The emerging movement of censorship from conservative America. I was 15 when Feb 1 happened and watched it live. But I often forget just how politics were way more about traditional values in the 90s and 00s.
- Corporations threw one person under the bus and took no accountability. They overreacted to 9/16th of a second and made the situation 10xs worse.
- Danyel Smith, Cathy Hughes, Chris Molanphy, Matt Serletic, Alan Light and especially Jenna Wortham and Shannon Holland all gave great commentary throughout the documentary.
What I didn't enjoy?
- That blacklist denier Andy Levin, who worked for Clear Channel HAHA. There was a lot of "cover my as*" behavior on this documentary. "Just A Little While" was doing well for 2-3 weeks and then just STOPPED. Someone made a few calls and that someone is CLEARLY Les Moonves.
- It jumped too quickly from 2004 to 2018. Once they stop discussing the backlash, it abruptly goes to JT returning to the Superbowl.
- The comment "JT manned up". Yes, he gave an apology, but went on to record "Give It To Me" and did that skit at ESPY Awards.
Is it worth the watch?
Yes. Lots of people are unaware of the scrutiny Janet faced and lots more don't remember this event. Some will watch this and be irritated at the actions taken against her.
I also think Janet's documentary will be BETTER, because she is involved and will give us more of a personal look into her life. I hope she discusses her emotions and thoughts surrounding the Superbowl. Janet's feelings were NEVER considered or thought of when tabloids and news were trying to drive up their ratings by using her name.
I give ZERO phucks about who planned the reveal. She is only human and made a mistake. The punishment was not fitting of the crime and never will be. She solely took public humiliation because of the Bush administration, CBS, MTV, Viacom, Clear Channel and the NFL having foolish leadership.
Overall, I give it an 8. It is a solid piece of work, IMO.

When her nipple got exposed, at first, I was thinking that it was part of the act and I felt kinda awkward and shocked. Then, I noticed how the camera quickly turned away as soon as it happened.

I was shocked when it happens, because I automatically knew it was a mistake! Janet has never needed cheap tricks to get attention. The whole idea of a reveal on live TV is way too risky...but whoever made the idea and however it occurred is not important. The orchestrated backlash and blacklisting has been the biggest issue with this story, period. That is what needs a further exploration, to create a more authentic story of events.

Distasteful interview. So unprofessional and immature. I can't believe they were treating her that way. Such total assholes.

I enjoyed the documentary. If only she hadn't switched outfits- well, that, or not had that nip ring underneath, which the clothing probably got caught on. She didn't "honor" Moonves with an in-person apology, so he probably had a hissy fit and took action. Though like the one guy said, it wasn't an across-the-board "ban." The videos did get played on MTV and VH-1- just not a heckuva lot. "I Want You" and "All Nite" showed up in the lower portion of their most-played charts for a few weeks or so. As for radio, "Just a Little While' debuted on the Feb. 13, 2004, Radio & Records pop chart, and its movement went: 30-23-20-19-19-25-47-out. It didn't really collapse until the March 19 chart.
Ah, well- in the end, Janet overcame Nipplegate and got her overdue Rock Hall induction. And karma bit Moonves in the rear.

^Though on the positive, important things were discussed, such as how Janet was unfairly treated, along with her importance as an artist.

Ah, well- in the end, Janet overcame Nipplegate and got her overdue Rock Hall induction. And karma bit Moonves in the rear. Respectfully, I disagree. The response from the companies and public were an outright ambush. The singles were not supported at all! Her previous album had every single go top 10 on a radio chart. "I Want You" went #4 on Adult R&B and that's it. "All Nite" didn't chart on Hot 100. MTV and VH1 may have played them overnight, but she wasn't getting interviews, tv specials or performances on either channel. That would be BET. Nipplegate doesn't define her, but it had a negative effect on her reputation and record sales for years.

I just meant that she overcame it and the incident didn't keep her from, eventually, getting her due. In the end, it wasn't enough to keep her out of the Hall of Fame. she had to wait some after her eligibility, but there are others who've had to wait longer.
I agree that it impacted her career commercially thereafter, though at some point, she wasn't going to enjoy the same success she enjoyed prior (2004 was 20-plus years since her debut album; also, other big female acts also had commercial slumps around that time). Would it have come an album later? Two? We'll never know, thanks in large part to Nipplegate.
On side/related notes- Viacom/CBS owned BET at the time of the 2004 Super Bowl, didn't it?
