It's kind of ridiculous how much power the Today's Top Hits playlist has, but the few times I use Spotify I tend to check that playlist first so I guess it makes sense.

So I'm guessing this will continue to hover around the mid teens at Pop for another week or so and then they will pull the plug and release the second single (maybe announce the new album at the same time). Another good song that sold well and people seemed to like that Radio ultimately dropped the ball on for some unknown reason. :| Right? I love this song.

Removed from Spotify's Today's Top Hits playlist. :'( Never been a Miley fan, but this shoulda been the song of the summer. Maybe this will catch a second wind.

#12 on iTunes (discounted) and dark green I hope this returns to the top twenty again at some point. Part of me is really happy this managed to get a top 10 peak, but another part of me is annoyed she didn't release it on the Friday so it may have had a higher peak (emphasis on may)

A second wind for this song wouldn't be the worst thing. I really would like to see it hit top 10 on Pop.
Considering her track record with radio is fairly unremarkable so far, not a huge shocker if it's really done.

Kind of surprising that the lead single from a 24 year old did better at Hot AC Radio (Peak #14) than Pop (Peak #16).

Kind of surprising that the lead single from a 24 year old did better at Hot AC Radio (Peak #14) than Pop (Peak #16). To me it wasn't really a surprise given the song ("Malibu" is kind of out of line with what pop plays right now and I've always felt songs like this one are more HAC/AC friendly than pop). I do see where you're coming from though especially since her music hasn't really been HAC friendly anyways outside of "The Climb" and "Wrecking Ball".

Kind of surprising that the lead single from a 24 year old did better at Hot AC Radio (Peak #14) than Pop (Peak #16). To me, she's grouped in with the Katy's and Gaga's. She's been around for a long time to be just a "24 year old." She seems 30.

I completely disagree - she is in the Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez group. Don't forget Selena has been around since 2009, Miley 2007, Demi 2008 and Ariana 2010. Ignoring Skyscraper and Give Your Heart A Break, I would consider 2013 the year they all broke out as themselves rather than Alex Russo, Hannah Montana, Cat Valentine and Sonny Monroe/Mitchie Torres. Heart Attack (a big hit for Demi), The Way (Ariana's first single, top 10 debut), Come & Get It (Selena's first top 10 and her change of sound/image) and We Can't Stop (changed image, big hit and led to Wrecking Ball). 2013 is when they all began to be taken seriously, to me. They were now more than just ex Disney/Nick stars, they had their own careers and identities now. Ariana has had three albums since then, Demi and Selena are about to release their third each, meanwhile this is Miley's fourth lead single (We Can't Stop, Wrecking Ball, Adore You, this).
The reason I think this song didn't do as well on pop radio is because, although it is a pop song, it doesn't really sound like one. Even when she performed it, she always seemed to put a country twist on it. It reminds me of Million Reasons. Especially when I found out the huge hit We Can't Stop only got to #9, this doesn't surprise me. It has sold very well compared to its radio run, had a decent start on Spotify nd now everyone thinks "wow, Miley looks great and is normal now". I don't think this shows she is unable to get a hit. Don't forget, this still managed to peak at #10, with its debut week caught between two weeks. It also has over 200 million views on YouTube and #11 on iTunes (granted, discounted). So long as her next big single is more poppy, I think she will be perfectly fine. Not that she already is, this was a good sized hit and a hit globally as well (#3 in Australia, #2 in Scotland, #4 in Canada, #7 in Ireland, #1 in Belgium and top 10/15 in many other countries)

Miley Cyrus became a big name way before all of the other people mentioned in the above post. It doesn't matter that they were all technically around then, who released what when, who established or broke out however too, Miley got a lot more publicity than any of them did for years and years (those jailbait Leibovitz photos only being one part of them). Hannah Montana was her main vehicle, but Miley Cyrus was a known name to people outside of Disney.
Technically, she was birthed as part of the High School Musical/Jonas Brothers era, which makes her predate Katy Perry, but ultimately I don't think any of that has to do with why this track stiffed in the long run.

I'm not really adding much to this discussion beyond semantics but Miley had several airplay hits (including a pop #1) before radio would even touch Selena/Demi (with 'Party In The USA' hitting #1 in 2009 before Selena charted with 'Naturally' in 2010 and Demi with 'Skyscraper' in 2011). I guess the thing here is Miley's not out there following/chasing trends like her successors have.

I'm just a casual observer, and to me, Miley has been around forever. It's almost as if she's being grandfathered into ageism because of how long her career has been already.
