Wow, I legitimately thought Mariana's Trench would've made like top 20. I was waaaaaay off. What a shame

I'll continue later this evening. Here's a clue for the next one: Canadians everywhere would be outraged that this next artist is so low on this rankdown.
Ta-tah!

Marianas Trench played Parliament Hill for Canada Day a few years ago and I was there the day before with my sister and dad while they were doing soundcheck...Josh is walking around off stage and my dad says to me "Look at that guy, what's with his outfit and hair???" And then a few minutes later he takes the stage and it dawns on my dad who he just insulted. :')

I hope somebody will do this with Britain, Australia and New Zealand because for these i think I'd know enough to participate I believe Az Paynter has an Australian themed Rankdown coming up, but not entirely sure of the when/who/hows, etc, etc!

My Aus-themed rankdown that I'm working on is based on songs, not artists - it won't be like this one.

The Tragically Hipβs first three albums have each received Diamond certifications from Music Canada, meaning they shipped each one million copies. I always found Diamond certifications impressive in Canada because with a population of 35 million people, that means 1 in every 35 people has a copy of each of those albums. That doesnβt account for family households, etc. If we assume the average household has 4 people, that's one copy for every 9 homes. lol 11 of their 13 studio albums have been certified Platinum and the remaining two have been certified Gold. That means every album theyβve released has been certified. Their Hits compilation, live album and even their 2 CD/2DVD box set have been certified at least Platinum. In May 2016, lead singer Gord Downie announced he had been diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer and basically had months to a year left to live. They still went ahead with a tour in support of their new album with a final stop in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. That concert was aired live on CBC to an audience of 11.7 million people, nearly 1/3 of Canadaβs population. Many cities aired a live feed of the concert outsides to large gatherings. (My city displayed it on a big screen at city hall and the place was PACKED!) Since his diagnosis and following the Hipβs tour, Gord Downie has also been heavily involved with bringing attention to Indigenous issues politically. His solo album, also released last year, is a concept album about a First Nations boyβs fatal escape from a residential school in the 1960s. The video for Ahead By A Century came out when I was in grade 6 and reminds me of my girlfriend at the time (lol). Also, I think I might have had a crush on the boy in the video lmao

Get out of here.
I'm not Canadian, and I know that this low placement of The Hip is sacrilege.

I keep forgetting to do those preview posts before I reveal an artist. lmao!
That's probably it for tonight people. There won't be any more #1 losses for the next couple of reveals so the rest of you are safe for now.
The next two artists are both surprises to me that they made it this high. I guess country fans aren't the only ones grouping together to get their favs on this list!

I first heard of Lights around the time I first heard "Lights" by Ellie Goulding, and I used to always get the two artists confused. lol

My ranking thought process was simple. My top three were untouchable, set in stone from the beginning. Lights was the clear #4. After that, I then set out to rank the rest of the artists in my top 50. That's how much I love Lights, and how disappointed (but not shocked) I am to see her go out this early.
Siberia is a must-listen. Might be one of my five favorite albums of the decade so far.

Wow I thought I'd see the Hip in the Top 10!
Great unveiling of this list. Loving the trivia cliffhangers.

I remember first hearing of lights back when "second go" was playing on those "famjam" music video segments on the family channel (what used to be our de facto disney channel, now that we have an actual disney channel I have no clue what it's turned into lmao) like 7 years ago lol also glad to see the tragically hip on the list, although they should have been a lot higher

Gutted that Kathleen Edwards didn't make the top 50, go check her out guys! Also if you're in Ottawa go check out Quitters, I loved her coffee shop! Got the travel mug to prove it. Fefe Dobson slays, her 3 albums are all stellar and I'm dying for a fourth one. Terri should be higher but I can't complain, at least she made the list! She's my all time favorite artist! (Also I'd say "Girls Like Too", "I Just Wanna Be Mad" or "Better Things To Do" were all bigger even if they didn't peak higher.) Lights is great, I've been waiting for her to have a break out hit in the states one day. Not sure it's ever going to happen but I'd love to see it.

I've been wanting to go there since it opened! I met her once. About ten years ago. She signed my Failer CD and got a picture with her. She's the greatest!

I went to check out the directions for quitters out of curiosity and it's like a 45 minute drive for me (then again I barely live in the official ottawa boundaries at this point so )
