Yea as you can tell I struggled to find songs to put in my top half, so sometimes I had to settle on stuff like Estefan lol

Ouch! This isn't going well, but what can I say? I love these cheesy ballads and still listen to them after 30 years.

In the #MeToo era, the Anything For You lyrics are embarrassing. They should rename it βIβll Be Your Floor Mopβ. Canβt Stay Away From You is nice though, and deserved better.

Anything For You isn't lyrically any more embarrassing than Mariah's Can't Let Go, Everything But the Girl's Missing, or even Adele's Someone Like You, just to name a few examples. Pining after some ex who left and moved on with his life eons before isn't really a #metoo trigger IMO (if you think it is that might say something about how that movement ultimately missed its mark from a public relations perspective), otherwise 75% of pop music would have to be wiped from the earth.

Huey continues getting the shaft, I see. But really, I still have yet to lose anything I really care about. That Winwood song doing so poorly has me worried about the two superior Winwood songs in this RD, though.

IDC if I was introduced to it through the Eric Prydz track, it's a good song.

Thereβs nothing wrong and embarrassing about pining after some ex, but IMO: I'd still do anything for you I'll play your game You hurt me through and through But you can have your way goes beyond that. Maybe Iβm interpreting the lyrics wrong. I also recognize that you canβt blame her for writing that lyric back then, but I feel nowdays it feels a little inappropriate. (By the way, I loved that song back in 80βs, it was a 2-week #1 in my personal chart).

(By the way, I loved that song back in 80βs, it was a 2-week #1 in my personal chart). I can see why one would read those lyrics like that if just looking at that verse. I always read/heard it along with the line before it ("Since you said we're through it seems like years...Still I can't figure what went wrong") and the verse after ("I can pretend each time I see you/that I don't care and I don't need you"). I.e. the guy is the one who dumped her and he made it clear he wants nothing to do with her, so she's saying "fine, if that's how you want to be I'll play the pretend game and say I don't miss you either." But deep down she does still want him back; in fact she doesn't even understand why they fell apart in the first place. I don't think she meant it to imply that he was playing mind games or abusing her or anything like that. My only real qualm with that (and with any song along these lines) is that it's usually so dramatic and one-sided, you never get even a hint of reality. Surely the guy (or girl) didn't just up and leave a happy relationship, something must have been going wrong before they finally left even if that something is as simple as the person being a habitual cheater and leaving for someone new. But the person singing always seems completely oblivious to any shortcomings on either party's part. Adele showed up on some married guy's doorstep just to wax poetic, talking about "it still isn't over for us in my head." Like c'mon girl! Have some self-respect! You don't even live in that neighborhood! Anything For You is probably one of the less groveling songs in this regard.

DISGRAZIA! Sam and Full Force were the original Britney and Danja. Lisa Lisa didn't perform as well as I anticipated in the 1987 rankdown either so I suspect there is a bias against songs that make you DANCE. How 'bout youuu...shut the f*ck up! Exactly. Noone seems to care about any R&B /funk/Dance songs from the 80's, Unless it was Prince, Janet and Michael Jackson. #81. I Want To Be Your Man - Roger Not even R&B funk classics are safe with this bunch. From the looks of it, unless its Prince, or Michael and Janet Jackson, nothing else R&B funk before the 1990's gets any love here. That's a real shame too. Anyway,This song was originally credited to Zapp featuring Roger, That is why Roger uses the effects in his vocals. I thought it gave it a unique sound. Very romantic lyrics. This one also appears on a lot of "Oldies" classics compilations. Very true...

#72. Foolish Beat - Debbie GibsonI'll come back to the others later, but this rank for this song really steams me. 8D This is literally the female version of "Careless Whisper". Sush a classy beat, with wonderful lyrics and vocals. What a complete travesty this rank is Speaking of travesties. Why is that acoustic ,song for a buck in a subway station, borefest still in the running? Did you all listen to an electrified version. BTW, glad Bruce "Bores me' and The Range is finally out. I was also never a fan of Whitney's ballads. None of them. Loved her uptempo Dance a thons tho.

In these next 20, you'll see more Glam Metal, Freestyle, One of my favorite rap songs of all time and the "Jeepers Creepers" theme song.
90. Dead Or Alive - Turn Around and Count 2 Ten (Billboard U.S. Dance #2) (DOC#10) Starting off with the late great Pete Burns and his band Dead Or Alive. This song started its chart run late in 1988, but I will surely bring it back once we get to 1989. The music video is great but chops off more than half the song. Here are both versions. The second is a Hi- Energy masterpiece.
(radio edit)
Turn Around And Count 2 Ten (The Pearl And Dean "I Love"-BPM Mix)
89. The Communards - Never Can Say Goodbye (Billboard HOT 100 #51) (DOC #10) The Hi-Energy vibe continues with Jimmy Sommerville's Communards. This Jackson 5 cover never sounded so great.
88. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #1) (DOC #10)
87. TKA - X-Ray Vision (Miami Freestyle) (U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play #26) (DOC #5) TKA broke the Miami Freestyle scene with "One Way Love" back in 1986. When they finally released their debut album, "X-Ray Vision" became another big hit on Billboard's HOT DANCE chart. Just like "Scars Of Love" and "Tears May Fall", this one also became a personal favorite of mine. Latin Freestyle and H- Energy had a lot in common with the use of the synths.
86. Kim Wilde - Never Trust A Stranger (U.K. #7) (DOC #7) I charted three Kim Wilde songs in 1988. Two of them ended up in my top 100. With its NRG dance sound , this song was poised to be her big club followup to "You Keep Me Hanging On". Unfortunately it never caught on in the U.S.
85. Roger - I Want To Be Your Man (Billboard HOT 100 #3) (DOC #8) Roger. Also known as Roger Troutman was the founder of Zapp. This funkadelic "Slo-jam" with its crafty use of the "talkbox", easily makes my top 100 of 1988. I always thought this had some great serenade lyrics.
84. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #3) (DOC #12)
83. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #1) (DOC #11)
82. Ratt - Way Cool Jr. (Billboard HOT 100 #75) (DOC #9) By the late 80's Glam Metal bands like Ratt were starting to inject Jazzy/bluesy vibes into their songs by adding horns and Saxophones to their music. A very cool development that kept Metal fresh and innovative
81. David Lee Roth - Stand Up (Billboard HOT 100 #64) (DOC #13) "Diamond" Dave was never far form my favorites of the year. "Just Like Paradise" didn't make my top 100 but this bop surely did.
80. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #2) (DOC #10)
PART TWO
79. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #4) (DOC #9)
78. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand (Billboard HOT 100 #12) (DOC #10) Now this is what I call fun Rap Music. Fresh lyrics and colorful music video to go along. I wish we could have ranked this one, cuz you all would have gotten a chance to see me upgrade a really great rap song.
77. Will To Power - Say It's Gonna Rain (Miami Freestyle) (Billboard HOT 100 #49) (DOC #4) More Latin Freestyle . This time from Will To Power. The actually had a #1 hit in 1989 by fusing a couple Lynyrd Skynyrd songs and makeing a ballad out them. I didn't care that one at all, but man this one was perfect with the Freestyle beats.
76. Rick Springfield - Rock Of Life (Billboard HOT 100 #22) (DOC #15) Rick Springfield has always been a personal favorite of mine. 1988 saw the release of "Rock of Life". This was the first single off the album of the same name. It was a departure from his more Poprock sound of the early 80's . This one had some hard rock influences and a horn section. It peaked just outside the HOT 100 top 20.
75. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #1) (DOC #8)
74. Cynthia - Change On Me (Latin Freestyle) (Billboard USA Dance #37) (DOC #2) also known as Cynthia Todino. Cynthia was another fresh Freestyle act getting major club play in the L.A music scene. Also one of the big hits palyed on Power 106 FM. In 190 she relased her debut album which also included "Endless Nights" and "Thief of Heart".
73. ? (Billboard HOT 100 #8) (DOC #15)
72. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peek-a-Boo (Billboard HOT 100 #53) (U.S. Modern Rock #1) (DOC #11) Known to many now a days as the "Jeepers Creepers" theme song. This was one of the top 3 hits on most Alternatiive rock charts of 1988. I always thought they were playing the song backwards or something, but it still sounded like 80's New Wave to me. The movie "Jeepers Creepers" really capitalized on the songs catchy chorus.
71. When In Rome - The Promise (Billboard HOT 100 #11) (DOC #7) One of the last very cool New Wave/Synthpop songs of the 80's. This song has become so much more popular than it ever was back then.

This was my highest ranked Winwood song, and should have remained in over RWI.
This was Gloria's weakest group of entries I think.
OMIT is Whitney's greatest 80s pop ballad.
Like IWTBYM, Hands To Heaven kept moving lower as I finalized my list.
And I've never enjoyed Kokomo, and I remember hearing it first when I was very little.

Y*******s Doc Indie Party Rock give me that X! Ray! Vision! and that when we met, it all happened so fast...! What is this aversion to all things Deborah Gibson about? It was far from a passion pick of mine but, as Pulse legend oscillations once said, Foolish Beat was *the* teen ballad of the 1980's.

This is far better than the ballad that hit #1 the following year, although they have superior songs in the exact same vein.
New Jersey is probably my favorite 80s Bon Jovi album.
