I like Applause but her best song ever? Please don't disrespect Bad Romance like that.
Wouldn't mind that sound back though. Applause and DWUW suffer from being associated with ARTPOP, an album that on the whole didn't really hold a candle to her previous efforts, and she was due for a bit of backlash at the time... but both songs are really good.

My vote for her best song ever is "Dance in the Dark." But then again, it sounds a lot like a Depeche Mode song (Strange Love, Never Let Me Down Again) and they are my favorite band.

I can listen to Applause non-stop all day and not get sick of it. So to me, yea it’s her best song. Bad Romance is great sure, but it’s not in my Top 5. It’s a tad overrated. Much prefer Monster and So Happy I Could Die from that album.

Picking favorite Gaga songs is hard for me because I like so much of her music that it really depends on my mood lol. Embarrassing.
I am glad to see people liking Applause though. I sometimes see it casually referenced as a flop and like, ok, it wasn't as big as Bad Romance obviously, but that was in the midst of like...EVERYONE hating her, huge backlash against her. Artpop is definitely when the backlash against her came to a head. The fact that it still performed as well as it did says something to me about how much people liked it lol. It would have been very easy for all of her singles from Artpop to legitimately flop and Applause was a pretty legitimate hit as long as you aren't comparing it to Bad Romance...

Living for the Applause love on here rn. I truly think it is one of her best - it also is electrifying live. Perhaps my fav song of hers live actually? I'd say that.

Do we think we are getting another jazz album with Tony or a solo album from her first?

My favorite Gaga songs all seem to be the second singles from each album: Telephone, Do What U Want, Judas, Poker Face

Applause, like much of the Born This Way album and Diamond Heart, continues to grow on me over time. I do think DWYW might be her most overrated single. I like it for what it is but as far as Gaga songs go, it isn't important.

DWUW feat. Christina could have salvaged Artpop era, or at least allowed for the third single to be given a chance. Never understood why they didn't just push that version once the controversy started.

Yes with some bullshît excuse about concerns over association with R. Kelly and Terry Richardson because of their sordid pasts as if that information wasn’t common knowledge before Gaga collaborated with the former and hired the latter to direct.

It was more than that, though. Stills revealed some sort of ER setting with a doctor (RK) ready to do what he wanted with Gaga’s body... some hints of sexual scenes in that setting leaked as well. That was just too freaking much especially with R Kelly of all people!

Kelly on a song proclaiming do what u want with my body didn’t raise enough eyebrows, I think any kind of sexually charged video was going to garner a similar reaction. Gaga probably just decided against releasing it instead of compromising her artistic vision.

I am just shocked that in this day and age (even THAT day and age) that the full video didn't leak SOMEWHERE.

Idk why but parts of what we saw of the DWUW video always reminded me a lot of Bad Romance
Which is a good sign BR still is probably her best video Telephone & MTN only challenge it, MTN though knocked out due to the length of it all
Also to this day, it still shocks me how badly G.U.Y underperformed I can see that it isn't the most radio friendly song ever and it's music video release was pretty damn long, plus only promo performance But it only like charted for one week on the Hot 100 right?
I love G.U.Y though, so it was sad to see it flop hard

I was watching so many old performances and interviews today. Rant ahead:
Joanne was such a f**king cop out. She is the pop star of the generation, and has served the best visuals since Michael Jackson. She brought back music videos and gave them value in the digital age, when labels were confused about their value/effectiveness. She created some of the biggest pop hits of all time, and managed to cement herself as a music history icon after only 5 years, and really is the pop-star of our generation. She has one flop album that people don’t like, and instead of going back to the creative drawing board, she contemplated quitting music, and did left-field projects like Cheek to Cheek for years.
I get that she’s entitled to that creative scope and expansion with side projects, but her comeback under the Lady Gaga name was SO anticipated. LG5 was built up to be the big comeback album before she even wrote it. Radio was anticipating it, and would have jumped on whatever she released, and the fans were anticipating it. After listening to her entire discography today, Joanne has to be the biggest f**king cop out. It was like she was scared to flop again, but you can’t flop if you don’t try. She knew what people wanted from her, and I think she was scared she couldn’t deliver it, so hid behind a “personal singer-songwriter” project that people couldn’t s**t on. (Like I’m doing now lol).
It wasn’t the time, or place in her career for that and it pisses me off that she did it. She books these huge events based on her name and what she accomplished in those first 5 years. Not the music she would have made if she wasn’t “Lady Gaga”. I hope to god with Vegas on the horizon she realizes that, and gives us Lady Gaga back. And if she’s done with it, than retire and start a career as Stephanie, but stop ruining the legacy because it’s going to make it difficult for me to teach my kids about her greatness someday.

It’s pretty impressive she managed to sell 600k+ units in the streaming era. Very interested to see what direction she takes with the next album

I agree with most of this. This was especially how I felt after Joanne was released and I found my close friends raving about it. I kept my mouth (mostly) shut but even upon the album's first listen, I was let down. I am completely for her going the singer-songwriter route at some point in her career but it shouldn't have been at this one. I remember thinking when Telephone was released that Gaga was the bigger of the superstars between her and Beyonce (and I STAN Beyonce) but now, that isn't so. It's interesting because she used to have this drive and tenacity which she still has a lot of but has been missing to the extent during her debut through early ArtPop.

NOT Joanne selling 159k less than Artpop with no radio hit. And C2C at 760k! #queen
