Yes just like when Lennon was murdered The song of his that went #1 after his death was pretty nondescript, specially compared to some of his better 70s singles. But his death made the public interested in that single and it went #1. For me, even tho not a fan by any means of xxx, the song itself it's quite solid AND I love a fast turnover at the #1 spot. Besides Cardi will get her #1 this next week. Not exactly what happened with John Lennon. He was actually on the come back trail in 1980 after being absent from the music business for five years. "(Just Like) Starting Over" was the first single off his (and Yoko's) brand new album "Double Fantasy". The single was released in October 1980 and it had already reached #6 on the Hot 100 by the time he was killed on December 8th, 1980. After he was murdered, the single shot from #6 to #1 on the chart week dated, December 27, 1980, and stayed there for five weeks. This much is true: the single probably wouldn't have jumped to #1 so quickly if he hadn't been murdered at that particular moment. Would it have hit #1 if he had not been killed at that time? We will never know for sure but it is interesting to note that it had already hit the Top 10 on the Hot 100 before the tragedy occurred; so it already had momentum based on Lennon's name alone.

Bit random, but the charts for the first half of the year have all come out already, and we've 8 songs peaking at #11 this year so far:
Eminem featuring Ed Sheeran - River Kendrick Lamar featuring Zacari - LOVE. Bazzi - Mine Cardi B - Be Careful Post Malone - Paranoid Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie - Friends Shawn Mendes - In My Blood Kanye West - All Mine
Could we be heading towards a record number? Does anyone know the year with the most #11 songs?

I've said many times in the past that I dont like the chart formula. What happened today is ridiculous. A song making it to #1 because the singer died? Streaming has too much weight on the chart formula. The song will be #1 this week, out of #1 next week, out of the top 20 in 2 weeks and out of the top 100 in 3 or 4 weeks. What does next week or the week after have to do with this week?

Paging Daddy Juan to lock this again. I think you could have tagged me instead? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (TY! for the daddy though~) Either way, this thread is surprisingly back on topic, so once the full charts are posted, this could be permanently locked, unless this is derailed again before the aforementioned happens.

Patently false, as Nirvana had two major number one albums that went multi-platinum, one of which went diamond, in addition to a couple other independent charting albums, all charting over roughly a 2 1/2 year period before Cobain died. In terms of singles, they only had one major top ten Hot 100 hit (SLTS), but that was because alternative acts didn't release too many physical singles then and it was harder to get overall mass airplay. They did have a few other Hot 100 hits however, plus several other major rock hits that didn't chart on the Hot 100. Plus, in no way, shape, or form, were they as controversial as X. I don't know too much about the history of the band, and Cobain might have been involved somewhat in the drug world and other things, but it was probably mainly their music and how it had a more raw, harder, sexual and aggressive sound, than anything the bandmembers did in their personal lives. To my knowledge, none of them faced multiple criminal charges of aggravated assault, attempted murder, rape, or anything like that. Sherane I guess I'm just confused as to why you choose to defend X so much and laud him as your hero? Is there no shortage of other talented and innovative artists, including many hip-hop acts, who don't have major criminal allegations and whose music doesn't speak of and even celebrate such criminal activity, that you can find to admire more and get more easily behind? So you're saying that Nirvana did not get much airplay or have many single sales. I think we're on the same page with that one. That was my main point. A full BB200 analysis would be interesting. (Not sure the subtleties of that chart, and how much it's changed in the last 25 years). But RIAA I don't think is very consistent over decades. You're right about them not really being controversial on a personal level. I'm talking musically. Is there no shortage of other talented and innovative artists, including many hip-hop acts, who don't have major criminal allegations and whose music doesn't speak of and even celebrate such criminal activity, that you can find to admire more and get more easily behind?Whether an artist has a criminal record is irrelevant to how I see their music. And the truth is, a huge number of young Hip-Hop artists do have criminal records. I see no artist coming from the last few years (2015-now) quite as artistically innovative, distinct, interesting or multi-faceted as X. Here's my rundown: Uzi comes close, I suppose. He has the diversity. The talent. The innovation. Just not as much as XXX. And with Uzi, I kinda feel like he's going to end up being like Travis Scott and just fall into a musical rut. (He has no criminal record I'm aware of.) There are artists like 6ix9ine, who are ridiculously intriguing, entertaining, and distinct. But he's basically one note. (He does have a criminal record.) Same as above with Lil Pump. There's Cardi. Very entertaining. Has the performance talent to earn a legacy similar to Nicki. Not as novel as XXX. Not as much of a range as XXX. (No criminal record that I know of) There's Logic. Very interesting on a lyrical level. Distinct and diverse musically. But doesn't bring much new to the table. Just is able to use a range of sounds already popularized by others. Not as interesting musically. (No criminal record that I know of). Kodak Black, Kevin Gates, and to a lesser extent NBA YoungBoy. All great rappers in a more traditional sense. Don't bring too much new to the table. And aren't as diverse as artists.(All have criminal records) Trippie Redd is a great vocalist. And that's about all I can say for Trippie. (He has a criminal record.) Ugly God is hilarious and entertaining. But he hasn't given fans much to rally behind. (Has no criminal record I know of.) A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie has some good music too. But he gets carried by features a lot. Not too interesting in his own right. (No criminal record that I know of). What I was saying about the singles performance was that, yes, they didn't get huge airplay or sales, but no alternative acts did then (or even any mainstream rock acts I believe?), so you can't really fault them for that. They were the first alternative/grunge act to break into the mainstream in a major way, so comparatively, they did really well. But I was referring to overall chart performance, with albums combined with singles performance, and in that regard I think the vast majority would agree that, by the time Cobain died, their performance was certainly at least "more than half" as impressive as x's was before he died. And in terms of album performance, I don't think a complex analysis need really be necessary, as I looked the numbers up, and Nevermind went 5x platinum before he died, and their 2nd major label album, In Utero, went 2x platinum right around his death. To me those seem like very respectable numbers beyond a reasonable doubt, but if not I'll leave it open to debate. In terms of the other artists you mentioned, yeah, I see that some have criminal records and some don't. Almost all of them though seem to be the new ones and not exactly the biggest hip-hop artists out there today, so you seemed to be doing some cherry-picking a bit. But I will just leave it at that of course you are free to like who you like. It's become clear here that no one can convince anyone else not to like a certain artist.

John Lennon, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding also appear on the list.
As previously reported, XXXTentacion tops the Billboard Hot 100 (dated June 30) with "Sad!," which jumps from No. 52 to No. 1 after the rapper/singer died June 18 at age 20 after being shot in Deerfield Beach, Fla.
In the Hot 100's 59-year history, only seven other solo artists have hit No. 1 posthumously. XXXTentacion is the first to do so since Static Major on Feb. 25, 2008, as the featured artist on Lil Wayne's "Lollipop," which spent five weeks at No. 1.
XXXTentacion is the first soloist in a lead role to top the Hot 100 after passing away since The Notorious B.I.G., with "Mo Money Mo Problems," featuring Puff Daddy and Mase, in 1997.
Notably, six of the eight artists below earned their first No. 1s after they died, whereas the other two (Jim Croce and John Lennon) had previously reached the summit.
In chronological order, here is a recap of all the solo artists who have led the Hot 100 posthumously.
Otis Redding - "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," hit No. 1 March 16, 1968 (and led for four weeks)
After passing away in a plane crash on Dec. 10, 1967, at age 26, Redding's classic debuted on the Hot 100 in January 1968 and reached the summit two months later, earning him his first No. 1 after 19 prior entries (in which he rose no higher than No. 21). The song spent four weeks on top and has since been covered by dozens of artists, from Michael Bolton to Sammy Hagar.
Janis Joplin - "Me and Bobby McGee," March 20, 1971 (two weeks)
Joplin died of a heroin overdose on Oct. 4, 1970, at age 27, and five months later, the rock pioneer earned her first No. 1 with "Me and Bobby McGee." Joplin charted just one solo Hot 100 entry in her lifetime ("Kozmic Blues"; No. 41, 1969), plus three as a member of Big Brother and the Holding Company, but logged four posthumous entries, led by "McGee."
Jim Croce - "Time in a Bottle," Dec. 29, 1973 (two weeks)
Croce passed away in a plane crash on Sept. 20, 1973, and notched his second No. 1 hit three months later with the ballad "Time in a Bottle." He previously led the Hot 100 with "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," for two weeks in July 1973. The revered folk singer earned two additional posthumous top 10s: "I Got a Name," which hit No. 10 in November 1973, and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song," which reached No. 9 in April 1974.
John Lennon - "(Just Like) Starting Over," Dec. 27, 1980 (five weeks)
After his murder on Dec. 8, 1980, Lennon added his second solo No. 1, and biggest solo hit, "(Just Like) Starting Over." Not counting the record 20 No. 1s by The Beatles, the icon previously reigned with "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night," in November 1974. ("Imagine," perhaps his signature song, peaked at No. 3 in 1971.)
The Notorious B.I.G. - "Hypnotize," May 3, 1997 (three weeks); "Mo Money Mo Problems," featuring Puff Daddy & Mase, Aug. 30, 1997 (two weeks)
The Notorious B.I.G. holds the distinction of being the only artist with two posthumous Hot 100 No. 1s. After his shooting death on March 9, 1997, Biggie posted his first two leaders, "Hypnotize," that May, and "Mo Money Mo Problems," in August. He nearly earned a third, as Puff Daddy's "Been Around the World," featuring Biggie and Mase, reached No. 2 in January 1998.
Soulja Slim - "Slow Motion" (Juvenile feat. Soulja Slim), Aug. 7, 2004 (two weeks)
Soulja Slim's sole entry on the Hot 100 debuted nine months after his shooting death on Nov. 26, 2003. As featured on Juvenile's "Slow Motion," he reigned for two weeks in August 2004, marking the latest that an artist has led the Hot 100 after passing away.
Static Major - "Lollipop" (Lil Wayne feat. Static Major), May 3, 2008 (five weeks)
Like Soulja Slim, Static Major's first and only entry on the Hot 100 occurred after his death (on Feb. 25, 2008). Static Major, who died of internal bleeding, earned a featured billing on Lil Wayne's "Lollipop," which debuted on the Hot 100 in March 2008 and hit No. 1 two months later.
XXXTentacion - "Sad!," June 30, 2018 (one week to-date)
The song first reached a No. 7 high on March 31, when parent album ? became XXXTentacion's first No. 1 on the Billboard 200. After he was shot and killed June 18, the track vaulted to No. 1 on the Hot 100, with a 264 percent surge to 48.9 million U.S. streams in the week ending June 21, according to Nielsen Music. Before his death, the chart success of XXXTentacion was concurrent with numerous controversies and legal troubles. When he died, he was awaiting trial on over a dozen felony charges and allegations of domestic violence against his then-pregnant girlfriend.

Florida Georgia Line Scores a First by Topping Three Country Songs Charts With Three Different Songs: 'Up Down,' 'Simple' & 'Meant to Be' News By Jim Asker | June 27, 2018 2:02 PM EDT
Three charts, three No. 1s. As Florida Georgia Line, the duo of Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard, extends its reign atop Billboard's streaming, airplay and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart (dated June 30) to a 30th week with its Bebe Rexha collab "Meant to Be," the duo sets a record atop the tally's three component charts.
For the first time, an act tops Country Airplay, Country Digital Song Sales and Country Streaming Songs with a different track residing in the penthouse on each chart. On Country Airplay, Morgan Wallen's "Up Down," featuring FGL, rockets 6-1, up 17 percent to 39.7 million audience impressions in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music. "Up" is Wallen's first Country Airplay leader and FGL's 13th.
Atop Country Digital Song Sales, FGL's newest single, "Simple," leads, rebounding 2-1 as it gained by 2 percent to 21,000 downloads sold. The song, which debuted at No. 1 two weeks earlier, is the pair's eighth No. 1 on the chart. Thirdly, on Country Streaming Songs, "Meant to Be," FGL's fifth No. 1 and Rexha's first, rules for a 26th week, with 16.8 million U.S. clicks. FGL's unprecedented hat trick follows five acts that have led all three lists simultaneously, but not with three distinct songs each: Jason Aldean, Kane Brown, Luke Bryan, Sam Hunt and Keith Urban.
On Hot Country Songs, "Meant," Up" and "Simple" place at Nos. 1, 5 and 6, respectively, with all three songs in the top 10 together for a third week. FGL is the fifth act, and first duo or group, to triple up in the top 10 simultaneously. As FGL's Kelley recently mused on the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast of its versatility, "We can go left, we can go right and show our artistry and be creative."

XXXTentacion Tops Artist 100, 5 Seconds of Summer Return at No. 2 News By Xander Zellner | June 27, 2018 9:46 AM EDT
Plus, The Carters (Beyoncé & JAY-Z) debut at No. 3.
XXXTentacion vaults from No. 44 to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated June 30) to become the top musical act in the U.S for a second total week, following his death June 18. He first led the list on March 31. The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
XXXTentacion is the fourth act to top the Artist 100 posthumously, following Tom Petty (who led with his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) in October 2017; Prince in May 2016; and David Bowie in January 2016. Additionally, Linkin Park led the Aug. 12, 2017, ranking after frontman Chester Bennington's death.
XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Onfroy, was shot and killed June 18 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, at age 20. His success was overlapped with numerous controversies and legal troubles leading up to his death. When he died, he was awaiting trial on over a dozen felony charges and allegations of domestic violence against his then-pregnant girlfriend.
The controversial rapper/singer concurrently lands nine songs on the Billboard Hot 100, led by "Sad!," which vaults 52-1, sparked most heavily by its 264 percent surge to 48.9 million U.S. streams in the week ending June 21, according to Nielsen Music. Plus, his two LPs return to the top 10 of the Billboard 200. In topping the Artist 100, he gains by 769 percent in overall activity, with streaming accounting for the majority (61 percent) of his points on the chart.
5 Seconds of Summer re-enter the Artist 100 at No. 2, as the pop group's third LP, Youngblood, launches at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 142,000 equivalent album units. The act spent a week atop the Artist 100 in 2014, fueled by the arrival of its debut self-titled LP.
Beyoncé and JAY-Z debut at No. 3 on the Artist 100 as The Carters, as their joint album Everything Is Love opens at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (123,000 units). As soloists, Beyoncé peaked at No. 2 on the Artist 100 in May 2016, concurrent with the chart bow of her album Lemonade, while JAY-Z spent two consecutive weeks at the summit last summer, fueled by his album 4:44.
Closing out the Artist 100's top five, Post Malone drops 2-4 and Drake holds at No. 5. Check out this week's full Artist 100 here.
