Coming in at #6, we lose an album track that many people have mentioned through the years as a song they wish had been a single!

You played me for a fool, And I played the part so well. You played it smart, you played it cool. Broke every promise, every rule, And I couldn’t even tell.

"Shame On Me" is the final song to leave us before the top 5. This is one of the most clamored-about non-singles from the album, from what I have observed through the years. It was always on pace to finish right around the middle of the album, however, and was never even close to contending to be the highest-finishing album track.
Personally, I feel like just missing the top 5 is a good place for this song, as it is a good song, but hardly compares to the best of the album imo. George's vocal performance on the verses sounds awkwardly shaky in places, and to me the idiom around which the chorus is based grew tired pretty quick when put in song format. Still an enjoyable listen, but I revisit almost the entire top 5 more than this one.
It was the least polarizing song on the album, which is pretty cool!

A showman’s life is a smoky bar And the fevered chase of a tiny star. It’s a hotel room, and a lonely wife From what I’ve seen of a showman’s life.
Nobody told me about this part.

"A Showman's Life" was very consistently among the highest ranks of this rankdown, and for awhile looked ready to settle in right around #3. Unfortunately, it was neck-and-neck with another song, and Troublemaker's #3 ranking was enough to shove it backwards by a position towards the end! LBTrocks' last-place rank was the final nail in the coffin, shoving it to the bottom of the top 5. It was still a good 9 points ahead of "Shame On Me", so it was never really in danger of missing the top 5. .indulgecountry loses a #1 here, so I imagine he is less than thrilled to see it out now... Flops undoubtedly tanked the song because it includes the one and only "Fail Hill" I have always found this song to be a highlight on the album. I always love it when George sings songs about being lonely in showbiz, whether it is in the rodeo, or in the music industry, or whatever it may be. He just has a knack for songs like this

Ruby lips hid a razor tongue And a heart blue as glacier ice. I was warned, but I was willin’ To ignore everybody’s advice. The more I gave, the more she took. She walked away without a second look.
4. "Poison"

Bowing out at #4, we say goodbye to "Poison", which is also the highest-placing album track. This song was very consistently poised to be at least top 2 on this rankdown, but unfortunately .indulgecountry, gardyfan, and ClevelandRox teamed up to tank it with their trifecta of semi-low rankings while simultaneously ranking all 3 singles high, allowing them to pass this song. "Poison" is a chilling song. From the moment that mournful guitar kicks off the intro of the song, all filled with reverb like its all alone in an empty cathedral, you know you're in for a treat. The lyrics are so well-crafted, but I have known them to get under peoples' skin. My mom personally hated the song because she hated the sentiment that you can learn to love anything, no matter how much pain it causes you. But part of me feels that people dislike that idea simply because it is hard to face, because it sure does seem to be true... How else do you describe people getting addicted to opioids, or alcohol, or pornography, or abusive relationships? It's a stark reminder of our mortality and our fallibility as humans. I can totally understand why this song is so loved by many, and so disliked by a few. I almost wish it wasn't on the same album as "Drinkin' Man", because it makes it seem like you have to compare the two. They are similar thematically, and both are amazing.

To break this tie, it all comes down to the amount of #1s... The only problem being, 2 of them have the same amount of #1s!!!!!!! So the amount of #2s is literally the difference between winning and losing this rankdown
