Now that we are done with #7, it is time for us to move on to what is without a doubt one of George's most iconic albums from the '80s! Ocean Front Property spawned three hit singles, all of which are among George's most immediately recognizable early-career hits. If you asked a bunch of people what George's signature hit was, I am sure that both "All My Ex's" and "Ocean Front Property" would come up, which is pretty astounding considering how small this one album era was in the context of his entire career as a whole. Somewhere Down In Texas is not as important in the context of his overall career, and yet it is no slouch. It spawned a #1 hit in "She Let Herself Go", and a song that nearly got there with "You'll Be There". It also has several album tracks that have become well-known fan favorites through the years. Also, I am not sure if you guys realize this, but we are only 3 albums away from finishing the '80s, and 4 albums away from finishing the '00s. THE ICONIC '90S ALBUMS ARE ON THEIR WAY SOON!!! Submissions for both albums are open now, and will be closing on Saturday, July 27. I had a feeling that "How 'Bout Them Cowgirls" would be quite polarizing and as it turned out it was with the largest standard deviation. This has been one of my favorite songs from the album since I first heard it and it sounds just as good to my ears today as it did back then. Something about the production of the song really clicks with me and I love the way George sings the lyrics. This has always become a concert staple for his live shows and I don't think he's excluded the song from his setlist since he started singing it live in 2006.
"I Ain't Her Cowboy Anymore" is probably George's favorite album track from IJCN so I'm not surprised y'all are in agreement! This was always a song George put into his setlist as well and while I do enjoy it the song comes in at just under 5 minutes which kind of takes the wind out of the audience for a bit. Still a great song that George sings with a lot of passion and I'm sure he would've loved to have sent this to radio as the 5th single.
I had a hunch that "Wrapped" was going to come in at #3 and that's exactly what happened. Being that the songwriter Bruce Robison hails from Austin, I had been familiar with this song for many years prior to George recording it as Bruce had released the song on an album of the same name in 1998 that also included "Angry All the Time" and "Desperately" both of which would of course go on to be hits as well. This has and will always be my favorite song from the album.
I'm actually thrilled to see the title track win because when the album first came out it was that song that was my favorite at the time. As the years have gone by, though, the song settled back into my top 4 and I think it has more to do with the fact after seeing George live so many times I found that "It Just Comes Natural" isn't an easy song for him to sing as I think the vocal range is a bit too high for most of the song. I noticed he stopped including the song in the setlist and for the most part he always includes "Give It Away" and "How 'Bout Them Cowgirls". Again, considering it was initially my favorite song from the album back in the day I'm not at all surprised to see most of you enjoy as much I did.

Seeing "Give It Away" lose when it came in pretty far ahead of IJCN in the singles rankdown is s**tty. It should've won. What an iconic song. :'(

IJCN is an iconic album. With the exception of One Foot (which isn't bad), I really enjoyed everything on the album. This is probably the George Strait album that I go to most routinely over the last 5 years. The album tracks continue to grow on me. That's My Kind of Woman had always been my favorite, w/ I Aint Her Cowboy Anymore also way up there. HMHRHYB and WCILHA keep growing on me. I personally don't see why the disdain for COJ and WS. All in all, just a great album. Just submitted for the next two. Ocean Front was another great album that I wasn't overly familiar with. Somewhere Down in Texas was probably my least favorite so far. I liked half and the other half were just okay IMO. Thanks bboat11!

I’m really looking forward to the next two albums as Ocean Front Property is an album I still come back around to quite a bit (and have on vinyl!) and I was spinning Somewhere Down In Texas a lot back in 2005 because that’s more or less when I was finally settling down near Austin. Funny side story to OFP...I remember riding along with my Aunt somewhere (I was maybe 9 at the time) and looking around at the cassette tapes in her car when I pull out George Strait’s Ocean Front Property and she asks me something like “You like him? I can put it on for you” to which I think I replied “No, not really and he has a weird name” lol. It wouldn’t be a year later that I actually realized I did like him

Man, don’t you know This woman you want and crave Is the queen of my kingdom? When she walks through the garden, Roses drop petals to cushion The footsteps she takes. I know she once loved you, And I know you still love her, But you carelessly asked for your freedom. I can see how it hurts you, but it’s too late. You’ve made your mistakes.

There were no second chances for our #10 song! It dropped like a stone from my #5 ranking, and once it landed in last place it never looked back. "Second Chances" is a song that I did not exactly expect to be a last place contender. I have always found it to have a pretty wise lyrical message, especially when you realize that George as the narrator was in the same position as the guy that he basically replaced, in love with a woman who wouldn't give him a second chance, which is what allowed him to be in position to meet his new love. However, listening objectively, I can see why people might not like the song. The melody is very slow and plodding, and while it has never bothered me, I can see why it might bother some. Other than a #5 vote from myself and collinkottke, everybody else had this in their back half, making this the seccond-least polarizing song on the album.

Well, the ocean ain't all that's blue for tim, who had hopes of a top 5 finish for "Without You Here". The song sets sail in the penultimate position, missing out on both the top 5 as well as the future album tracks rankdown. Another one that I was shocked to see such hate for! This song tells such a romantic and sweet story in such a well-crafted way. It's a pretty unique song from a production and melodic standpoint, but imo that helps it to stand out from the album in a positive way. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the minority, as six people found room for this one in their bottom 2... jimmy's carhartt has the unfortunate distinction of taking a hit to his top 3 incredibly quickly in his very first rankdown ever!

Well, the ocean ain't all that's blue for tim , who had hopes of a top 5 finish for "Without You Here". I see what you did there ...while I was expecting “Second Chances” to be out first I didn’t foresee “Without You Here” to follow it thereafter nor for it to receive multiple last place rankings. It’s a shame some of y’all don’t enjoy this one as much as I have come to over the years and maybe it’s just one of those songs that has to grow on you more with subsequent listens. Either way not a good start to this album rankdown for me.

"I'm All Behind You Now" is a somber, wistful look at lost love. I have always been fond of the way the lyrics describe it though. The whole description of "you did what you left to do, and I'm all behind you now" is just a very clever way to portray the whole situation, imo. It implies that she's the one that left, and that her life is coming together, and that he is still reeling in the breakup. And the fact that he promises to always be there for her even though she broke his heart... It's just a very well done lyric, which should be no surprise coming from Dean Dillon. The melody has always grabbed me a lot, despite being melancholy. I am unfortunately the first one to take a hit to their top 2, while ClevelandRox joins the #3 loss club. Four more people lose their last place though. This was the most polarizing song of the album, according to our results!

"You Can't Buy Your Way Out Of The Blues" is catchy, and has a theme that is effectively integrated throughout the entire song. However, melodically it is not one that I am always in the mood to listen to. This song was on pace to be in the bottom 2 for almost the entire submission period, before a couple random high ranks came from castleoblivion26 and Cody Wants Out... came right at the last minute.

jimmy's carhartt joins me in the #2 loss club, but that unfortunately means his #2-4 are all wiped out, leaving his top 5 in shambles :( I, however, have the unfortunate distinction of being the last person with their last-place remaining now that collinkottke lost his with the last reveal... "My Heart Won't Wander Very Far From You" did better than I expected, honestly. It was a top 5 contender for pretty much the entire submission period, and only ended up missing because of collinkottke's last-place rank at the very end! It actually tied with the #5 song, but lost the tie because the song it tied with has multiple top 2 rankings! Anyway, the reason I am surprised this song did so well is because I figured more people would have a problem with the lyrics. The song is basically a laundry list for every sexist reason somebody could ever value their wife... It's like, "Yes, that other gal is REALLY hot, but I would never leave you because you are so good at cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, managing the budget, sewing, meeting my physical needs", etc... Lmao I mean, at least the narrator is aware of how good he has it and smart enough not to mess it up, but it's not exactly romantic to imply "if I ever found somebody hotter who is as good as you at all those things, I would possibly consider leaving you for them"
