I do like "Overnight Success" quite a bit, but agree with LBTrocks that it just kinda plods along. I do really enjoy the way that the lyrics are crafted! There are numerous incredibly vivid and effective descriptions of his loss and heartbreak throughout the song! But melodically the song just kinda chugs along like a lawn mower stuck in its lowest gear... It is barely over 3 minutes long, but to me it always somehow manages to feel like it's over 4 minutes. After finishing at #99 in the singles rankdown, behind only "Shiftwork", it should come as no surprise that this song finished so low here. It is pretty clear that this song was a bit of a headscratcher to release as a single according to Pulse! The lyrics are the best thing it has going for it... and I can see why it was released as a single for that reason. Musically though, there were WAY better options on the album!

Swingin’ doors, sawdust floors. A heartache drowns as the whiskey pours. There’s a hole in the wall from some free-for-all, The ringin’ crack of that ol’ cue ball. I been fallin’ in here for what seems like years, Where the tears and the lonely belong. And wonder what’s goin’ on Beyond that blue neon.

Ok now "Beyond The Blue Neon" deserved better. I love the swing of this song and how it sounds slightly 'off-key' if that makes sense lol. I love George's vocals on this, love the piano, and the melody. The fiddle laced throughout the song is also a gorgeous embellishment. Just everything about the instrumentation and melody is heaven to my ears lol

I love George's vocals on this, love the piano, and the melody. The fiddle laced throughout the song is also a gorgeous embellishment. Just everything about the instrumentation and melody is heaven to my ears lol The fiddle is mixed in with saxophone, giving it all a really unique sound!! This is a perfect segue for me to mention that this album was deemed kinda sonically different for George when it was released. Today it is easy to overlook because it fits so neatly within his career, but he actually played with sounds here that he never had before. The most noteworthy was the saxophone. He attempted to jazz this album up quite a bit, by adding saxophone to several of the arrangements. In this song, "Angel Angelina", "Ace In The Hole", etc. there is very noticeable saxophone driving the musical arrangement for most of the song! That saxophone melody has always been a major selling point for "Beyond The Blue Neon" for me. It gives this song a huge boost of personality that makes it hard not to enjoy, imo. I only put this song at #8 because this album is so perfect, but we are officially in the "love" territory for me with this loss!

Well, here we sit at a table for two. But bottle, there’s just me and you. She loved me so, but I loved her so wrong. I gave her too much of too little too long.

My turn for a high loss :'( "Too Much Of Too Little" is one of my favorite George songs of the '80s. The ascending "I gave her too much of too little too long" melody is brought to life by George's velvety baritone Not to mention the wittiness of the songwriting that is characteristic of George as he headed into the '90s. The fact that this is a conversation between a narrator and a bottle of alcohol is about as classic country as you can get. This may not be widely regarded as a favorite from this album, but it did well enough to be included in the album tracks rankdown, which means it will at least get a chance to appear in a rankdown again in the near future!

The vocal arrangement of "Too Much of Too Little" is simply to DIE for! So gorgeous! And George is one of the only artists not only in country, but in all of music, that can make 'talking' in a song work. The instrumentation on this one is also lovely. Traditional country goodness is what this is! I know it missed my top 5, but this is a George album remember LOL. I still adore it.

I lose my #1 and #2 instantly and then I get a perfect #8 ranking and lose my #10...makes the first two losses less sad. I've still only turned a Lighter Shade of Blue though lol

"Leavin's Been Comin'" is a song that I did not really know what to expect from in this rankdown. I have always loved this one, and consider it to be among George's best ballads of the '80s! The vocal arrangement is an especially strong selling point for me However, it also feels like one of those songs that people might find boring despite being among my favorites, a la "What Did You Expect Me To Do" on the Does Fort Worth... album, or "I'm Never Gonna Let You Go" off of #7... This song fell quite a bit throughout the rankdown thanks to tim giving it such a high starting point, however once it settled in around 6 and 7, it alternated between the two positions with almost every new list, ultimately finishing at #6.

It was probably too much to ask for "Leavin's Been Comin' (For A Long, Long Time)" to make it into the top 5. It's a shame because this has long been one of my favorite songs from this album ever since I first heard it and it might be one of my top 5 favorite album tracks from George.

It's about time this song exits and what a disappointment it is that this song now makes it into the album tracks rankdown where it's all but assured I'll be ranking this one last. For whatever reason this song has always stood out to me as one that didn't quite belong on this album and it doesn't help matters that I actually much prefer Diamond Rio's version compared to George's (which I can't even believe I'd ever say!).

I present to you, the most polarizing song of this album!! "Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby" is extremely catchy to me, and I also find it pretty clever. The way it uses expressions of sadness to start a real phrase throughout the chorus is pretty cool, imo. (Example: "Oh me, oh my" becoming "Oh me, oh my sweet baby said goodbye." "Oh no" becoming "Oh no one else could take her place," etc.) The way George lingers on the expression of sadness, emphasizing each one before turning it into an actual sentence, helps make each one stand out in a good way. Actually, it is one of those songs that could come off as either really clever or really stupid But for me it manages to come out on the clever side of that coin! Not everyone agrees, however, as it got 4 bottom 2 ranks. Everyone else put it in their top 5 though! This was settled firmly at #4 for most of the rankdown before getting some of its lowest ranks in the last few lists.

I mean, this album is so short and had so many singles that technically only one album track will get excluded... So the chances of this one not making it were pretty slim!! Besides, I would MUCH rather have "Angel, Angelina" be the one that gets excluded, lmao ;)
