a bit surprised by Ultravox, ELO & Kraftwerk making Top 10. One of these I ranked quite high, 1 I ranked low & the other somewhere in between Pleasantly surprised by ELO. Befuddled by Kraftwek and not surprised by Ultravox, which I’m hoping for a Top 5 finish. I would’ve ranked almost any other Talking Heads song higher than This Must Be The Place. Looking forward to seeing the Top 10

22. Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) - Simple MindsPretty good. Simple Minds is always reliable. I always considered them more alternative, but they did use synths, so why complain. 21. 100,000 Fireflies - The Magnetic FieldsI did not get into this song's vibe at all. Not even the female vocals sung to me. This sounded like a one woman band on a small Casio keyboard while banging some pots and pans in the back round. Idk? too minimalistic maybe? 20. The Sparrows and the Nightingales - WolfsheimThis was a great first time listen. Reminds me of Real Life. 19. Falling - Julee CruiseMore female vibe that just didn't click with me. It actually sounded like something off Twin Peaks. 18. Great Southern Land - IcehouseNice to know Icehouse is considered a one hit wonder. If you liked this one check out "Hey Little Girl" also off 'Primitive Man'17. REALiTi (Demo) - GrimesI liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Also its weird for the MV version to be a demo version, but at least I listened to the correct one. She has got the pipes for synthpop too. 16. Everywhere - Fleetwood MacDecent synthpop. emphasis on POP, but I always enjoyed the ahh's before the chorus. 15. This Is The Day - The TheHere is one of those bands that would not appreciate someone writing their name without the "The" . I upgraded this a bit, cuz I hear it frequently over here, so its kind a grown on me. 14. Are 'Friends' Electric? - Tubeway ArmyThe phrase WTF comes to mind. How does a Synthpop pioneer miss a top 10 Synthpop countdown? Butterflies & Hurricanes could have and should have done better ranking with this song. 13. Love Is A Stranger - EurythmicsGreat spot for this Eurythmics classic. 12. This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking HeadsNot my favorite Talking heads song, but once again a certain memeber's ranking surprises me. 11. Moving in Stereo - The CarsThe apex of coolness from the Cars and you guys slot it under the top 10. How this song misses the top 10 has got to be one of the biggest mysteries I have ever encountered. I'm off to watch Fast Tims at Ridgmont High. BTW, for those of you who didn't already know Fountains Of Wayne got the idea from the movie for their vid of "Stacey's Mom" which was also a homage to The Cars. Watching Ben Orr in that live video kinda tears me up.

At least they are all 80's icons. We got that part correct. New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle Kraftwerk - Computer Love Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin Talk Talk - It's My Life The Police - King of Pain Depeche Mode - Stripped ABC - The Look Of Love Electric Light Orchestra - Twilight Ultravox - Vienna

EXTRAS:
Enferma de noche - La Mode Damn you got some Spanish Rock vibes in your blood. A classic in Spanish Rock clubs.
Under Your Thumb -Godley & Creme Didn't know these guys were from early 80's. English synthpop/New Wave for sure. Ashamed to admit I only know of "Cry".
Five Seconds - Twin Shadow Surprised to learn this is from 2012. Sounds like it could chart in 1985, but it also has that Indierock/Pop sound that I prefer in today's Alt charts..
here is my contribution to this rank down. Some classic Synthpop from Argentina
Virus - Luna de Miel

The top 10 is kinda a no-brainer, but I was expecting ELO to barely miss. I predict either Depeche Mode or Pet Shop Boys will win.

Pleasantly surprised at how many of my own top 10 (or close to) are in the actual top 10. My #1 isn't what I thought it would be going in, but I hope both my original #1 and my actual one can both make the top 5.

Length, maybe? And if people didn't know it was sampled by Coldplay (and found out via this rankdown, like myself) maybe that might also have some kind of effect depending on how they feel about 'Talk'. (I like that song, ftr, and I did not tank Kraftwerk here).

19. Falling - Julee CruiseMore female vibe that just didn't click with me. It actually sounded like something off Twin Peaks. I wonder why

This is a somewhat surprising top 10, to me at least. I did not expect Ultravox, ELO, or The Police to be in contention for the top 10. I also thought that Tubeway Army and The The would be there for sure.
I'm mostly satisfied with this top 10 but kinda wish my #35 was not here. I would be happy with any of my remaining top 10s or my #15 winning this.

#10-1: The ARP Odyssey Set #10 saw all but 5 people rank it in their top 25. Of the outliers, 3 are bottom 10. 6 top 20s, 2 top 10s, and 4 top 5s. This song took its time to become a consistent top 20 force, and was only top 10 twice -- once around the 2/3rds mark and once after the very last list.

This is good (of course), but I'm fine with it being the first out of the top ten. ELO has better.

#9 lets us finally see what the 3rd highest SD is! 2 people lose 1s, 3 more lose top 5s, 4 more lose top 10s, and 6 more lose top 20s. There are 7 bottom 15s, and 4 are bottom 10s.

This song is absolutely stunning, and I'm pretty much going to rank it top ten in whatever RD it's in...but this wasn't necessarily a great RD for it. And it still made the top ten.

#8 spent 4 movements outside the top 20, but it was top 10 for most of the process. It also has 4 bottom 10s, but one less bottom 15. Only 3 more people did not rank the song in their top 20. To be dealt with are 4 top 10s and 5 top 5s.

In a lesser rankdown, comparatively, I would have put this song higher. It's a good song by a good band.
In this rankdown, it wound up in the bottom ten purely because ten songs had to make up the bottom ten. That is what gates is capable of.

#7 is the first song that never left the top 10. It was as high as #2 early on, but a cluster of low ranks around the 1/3rd point brought this far enough from the top 5 that it could never get back again. Out of this song's astounding 10 top 10s, 4 are top 5. 4 more top 20s. Only 5 people couldn't find a place for the song in their top 30. However, all but 1 of these are bottom 10.

I was kind of rooting for this the further it went along, despite my ranking. Really surprised it got this high, given the competition, but I'm not totally against it.

#6 is the second "always top 10" song. In fact, it almost pulled off the feat of spending every ballot in the top 5, were it not for the last list. It is the first song with no bottom 10s, but it does have 5 bottom 15s to make up for that key deficiency. Only 2 more rankings are outside the top 25. 5 top 20s, 4 top 10s, and 5 top 5s. This is the last song without a #1 ranking.
