Half hour in and the song is still not working on Apple Music USA. Funny seeing the Swifties freak out on Twitter and threaten Apple. I heard it on Youtube but really Apple better not do this when the album drops or Steve Jobs may have a yard full of them out for his blood! lol! Edit... they finally got it working, Swifties win again! You know Steve Jobs died 8 years ago, right? Oops wow I’m an idiot for that one.

"Lover" debuts at #1 earning 1.853 million streams in US its first day.
"The Archer", "You Need To Calm Down", and "Me" all experience bumps as a result.

‘Lover’ is probably one of her best songs. It’s everything I love and have missed about Taylor.

Lover is the best possible song Taylor could release right now and it should have come so much sooner than it did. Songs like Me!, Look What You Made Me Do, Ready For It, You Need To Calm Down, etc, are fine and dandy for instant (albeit short-term success) but songs like Delicate and Lover are meant for the longterm and I think she's at a point right now where the Me's and Calm Down's are cheapening her legacy. Lover should have been the first single and while it might not have been an instant success the way Me was, I think it could have helped toward a much needed rebrand. The song itself is beautiful and probably the best I've heard from her since 1989 at least, but it's also reminiscent of her earlier sound, without the country of course but I think it's something her former country fans could get on board with without completely dropping the newer fans. To me it sounds like a mix of Fade Into You by Mazzy Star with Already Gone by Kelly Clarkson blended with some of Taylor's old material.
This is the type of music that will help her in the long run and if her album is made of more songs with this level of quality, it's an automatic buy from me.

"Lover" has a hint of country to it in spots, so would be interesting to see if country radio would give it some play. "New Year's Day" made it No. 41 on Country Airplay.

It would be nice to release a more upbeat song and "Lover" as singles when the album comes out like "Shape Of You" and "Castle On The Hill". I think "Lover" has a lot of potential but I don't want her to waste album release week on a slow-burn song. Releasing 2 singles would be a great strategy.

Lover is now the 6th top selling digital album of all time by a Western artist on QQ music with over 160,000 pre-orders. It was also released on their second biggest digital platform today - NetEase - and reached over 70,000 pre-orders there. Overall top selling digital albums of all time by Western albums across all major Chinese platforms. 1. reputation - 1,559,608 (20¥) 2. 1989 - 1,510,652 (19¥) 3. Kamikaze - 471,136 (20¥) 4. Evolve - 394,690 (20¥) 5. Bloom - 383,300 (20¥) 6. Thank U Next - 363,514 (20¥) 7. Revival - 349,593 (20¥) 8. Red Pill Blues - 313,841 (20¥) 9. Anti - 309,210 (15¥) 10. Origins - 280,867 (20¥) 11. Divide - 256,402 (18¥) 12. Lover - 242,943 (20¥) 13. Dangerous Woman - 238,780 (20¥) 14. Voicenotes - 238,237 (12¥) 15. Sweetener - 159,499 (20¥) 16. Witness - 146,864 (20¥) 17. The Thrill Of It All - 135,830 (20¥) 18. Queen - 139,716 (20¥) 19. Melodrama - 126,256 (20¥) 20. Head Above Water - 124,040 (20¥) Now that Lover is available on all major platforms it should rise up that list quite quickly. Although it hasn't sold as many copies as Anti and Divide, it already outgrossed them since those albums are cheaper. Well it's good for Taylor that whatever declines may be happening in the Western markets, the Chinese market is booming... I realize that the sales numbers are over one and a half million and that’s great, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a booming market. That’s one-tenth of 1% of the population of China.

I think that's what they mean by a "booming market".
These are the current numbers she's pulling which are already significant, and they're getting bigger and bigger as time goes along. The (legal) music market in China is ready to explode, similar to how China has become the most important market outside the US for movies.
Taylor is by far the biggest western artist in the country (and most of Asia really), so she's really set up in a good spot for the future.

HDD is predicting 700-800k in Pure Sales (200-250k digital and 500-550k physical).

800k on Pure Sales puts her close to 1m SPS, but apparently she needs streams comparable to thank u, next for that? That's not gonna happen.
I always forget that "massive" streams can ever hardly account for more thna 200k on SPS.

She is not hitting 1 million SPS this era. I am thinking 7-800k. There will most definitely be those calling anything less than a million+ debut for Taylor a flop, even by today's standards. Lol

I believe they're extrapolating that from the last paragraph, in which Hits says "Lover" would have to do the same # of streams as "Thank U, Next" to have a shot at 1 million. TUN did 228K in SEA. So if you take 200-250K in digital and 228K in streaming, you're left with about 550K units to come from physical sales and track sales.

Pitchfork reviewed her first five albums today, for whatever reason. to capitalize off the easy clicks from Swifties.

Pitchfork reviewed her first five albums today, for whatever reason. I can't help but think that this is in part a response to Taylor's Vogue profile. In the portion of the article where Taylor and the interviewer discuss sexism in the industry, the writer states, "I stared into space for a good long while when I was reminded that Pitchfork did not review Taylor Swift’s 1989 but did review Ryan Adams’s cover album of Taylor Swift’s 1989."

Also, when they have ignored a culturally significant artist's oeuvre out of innate snobbery, they go back and deep dive before a new album comes out.

NOTE: I have not heard Lover (am waiting).
Is anyone else suspecting the album is actually going to be...ready for it...somewhat singer-songwriter-y like Red?

Lover gives me a Speak Now vibe. I wonder if they’re going to push it to country radio (especially with a video already done).

I don't see why they would waste resources on country radio when there's nothing country about her now. The song is pop, the label is no longer country-led and most importantly country won't accept her easily now. (See also: New Year's Day's push to country)

(See also: New Year's Day's push to country) "New Year's Day" sounded less country than "Lover" IMO and didn't get any push outside of an adds date. If country/rap is a thing I don't see how "Lover" would fare so terribly.

She needs to decide what direction she wants her music to go. Seems like shes all over the place.

She needs to decide what direction she wants her music to go. Seems like shes all over the place. She’s only doing Pop and Country. What do u mean. 😐 Even if she’s doing a lot of genres, so what. Gaga and Beyonce and many other artists do that too.

She had said, when 1989 came out, that if you continue to chase two rabbits, you lose (or risk losing) both of them, hence why she didn't want to have country songs on that album when the label requested three country songs. Maybe she's had a change of heart after "New Year's Day," "Better Man," "Babe," etc.
