Billboard not labeling Old Town Road as Country could have some merit, but then you remember -- this is the same chart company who put Gangnam Style at #1 on the Rap chart in 2012.
Another comedical meme that skated on a genre. They're just definitely inconsistent and getting rightful backlash with the genre charts. Now they've become charts full of asterisks and debates.

I mean... "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" went to #1 on the Hot 100, and country charts... I would not call that country either, and it's definitely less than "Old Town Road".

Technically PSY does rap on the song, it's just not a hip hop song in the slightest. Hence why it didn't appear on the R&B/Hip Hop chart.

I agree but year end charts only come out once a year. Weekly charts is all you have each week Yes is gets discussed and predicted here constantly but not the same thing So you would say "We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow" was more popular than "7/11" then? Weekly charts measure weekly popularity. Year-end charts are better in comparing how songs fared in the long run, but they still don't ever measure the entire lifetime of a song. RIAA certifications do, but they are not precise and require action on the labels' part to be awarded. All of these are beautiful and wonderful and make us nerds happy

If Taylor didn't "come out" as a pop singer in 2014, Billboard would have let "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" and heck, even "Bad Blood ft. Kendrick" rule country charts. It's funny how white country girl gets a pass but they scrutinize everything about "Old Town Road". ππ It's classified as country on iTunes and has multiple elements that make songs "country," except POC make Nashville quake.

Darius Rucker has reached #1 on country though, and several times.

Old town road could easily spend a good chuck of time at #1. It has a lot of room to grow on radio.
Also unrelated; Bad Guy debuted at #1 in Canada.

It's not about race. Darius Rucker, Kane Brown, Jimmie Allen, Ray Charles, Charley Pride, Kevin Olusola and Kirstin Maldonado (the latter two as part of Pentatonix), are all people of color who have been on the Hot Country Songs chart. And while Deford Bailey didn't chart (the Hot 100 was before his time), he's in the Country Music Hall of Fame. But the easiest way to disprove it was about race... is that Lil Nas X even charted in the first place. He would have been disqualified as a black person in the first place. The difference between Taylor Swift is that she was being promoted to country radio and was viewed as a country artist back when 'Red' was released. So it isn't really a comparable scenario.

Yea I believe country radio won't play OTR because it's a rap song containing a NIN sample, not because Lil Nas X is black.

They didn't take an established star like Thomas Rhett further than #30 with his rapping on "Vacation".

Of course, as an Ariana fan I'm a bit sad she didn't get a 9th week but whatever, it was so close and 8 weeks at #1 is amazing.
Congrats to Old Town Road, which is also a really good song!
Sucker aside, this has been a really good year for #1s.

They didn't take an established star like Thomas Rhett further than #30 with his rapping on "Vacation". There are reasons why country radio probably wouldn't play "Old Town Road", but I don't think rapping would be one of them considering country radio has been willing to play songs that contain rapping like "Dirt Road Anthem" (which was #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart back when the chart essentially only counted airplay from country radio) and "This Is How We Roll" (which was #2 on the Country Airplay chart).

Sucker aside, this has been a really good year for #1s. I have loved this years number ones! Last year, we had an influx of songs I didn't like or didn't really care about making number one. But this year I've liked EVERYTHING. In fact, Old Town Road is probably my least favourite of this bunch but it's still growing on me and it's just refreshing to see it #1 rather than something like In My Feelings or Girls Like You haha.

What's wrong with it? It's a better way (along with RIAA certifications) as to what's more popular. No itβs not.

RIAA certifications do, but they are not precise and require action on the labels' part to be awarded. All of these are beautiful and wonderful and make us nerds happy For that one week it was more popular (according to Billboard). Thatβs why you need other weekly charts for context. How did 7/11 do elsewhere on other weekly charts? Looking at just a peak only tells you a small portion of the story. A peak is usually just a single week. How did the song do elsewhere? Yearend charts are skewed because while it does take into account a wider time range, it still cuts off at the start and end of each year so all those songs with chart activity that goes beyond that period doesnβt have that included in the yearend data. Yearend charts favour songs that have their entire chart run within that yearβs timeframe.

He includes all chart activity even in other years to a song's total for the year (year that it peaked)
