What annoys me about this whole discussion is how so many people think the chart should be less accurate just so they can be happy. This really is 2019 America, where facts are inconvenient. Y'all keep trying to basically deduce anyone who disagrees with letting Holiday songs continue charting the way they currently are to 'just wanting the chart to be less accurate'. It's incredibly one-dimensional and just dismissive overall. I personally understand the points made, but there's also other points. The issue is, the fact Holiday music will be pushing dozens of current hits and songs still into their peak as recurrent early on in their run as current rules exist. By 'keeping the chart accurate' the way it currently is, ironically, makes it far more inaccurate come January when various hits that should still be charting are no longer charting. The Holiday chokehold is much stronger every year, to the point within a few years, 20+ and 30+ Holiday songs should eventually began to chart. That would push out current songs as high as top 20, into no longer charting. A hit like Truth Hurts/Bad Guy going from months in top 10, to top 20 right around Q4, then off the chart and never re-charting within 1 month isn't accurate. A song just reaching top 20, then being pushed off the chart and not returning at the height of its run would also ofcourse not be accurate of its popularity. I don't really see how its 'wanting the charts to be less accurate' by calling that out. Also there's just things like the consequence in the future no big artist would want to release Q4, and thus the chart would deter artists from releasing new music rather than to encourage (in Q4), which is not what a chart is supposed to do. Also the point that Hot 100 is a barometer for current music -- people don't need to see Jingle Bells Rock chart at an arbitrary position 75 years later to have an understanding that its an enduring Holiday hit. People do need to see where a new Ariana/Post/Billie/a new artist's single is to have an understanding of how big it is & where their career status currently is. And having the position/chart run come off worse than it would be under normal (non Holiday) circumstances is ofcourse unfavorable.... but that's more personal opinion. The chart will always influence release schedules, whether it’s the holiday rush, the need to be the song of the summer, or having a hefty placement on the year end chart with a Q1 release. Using that as a reason isn’t exactly a good one. Plus, I’m all for putting how the Hot 100 runs in the hands of the consumer, not the control of record labels. This whole thing about only songs being pushed should be eligible is what made the hot 100 so shitty in the 90s. That shouldn’t happen ever again. The point you make about holiday songs pushing older hits to recurrent faster is valid, but you’re basically saying keep holiday songs off/reduced to keep other songs from going recurrent faster. Which is to say, make the chart inaccurate now to prevent it from being slightly inaccurate later. Recurrent rules are a whole other beast when it comes to chart accuracy and certainly shouldn’t inflict on how holiday songs chart. If the issue is with recurrent rules, tackle recurrent rules. As for the need to see what songs are hits right now, that comes down to the purpose of the hot 100 and what defines a current hit. If it’s meant to be a consumption chart, I think artists and labels should learn to deal with how holiday songs are treated by the *population* each year rather than trying to combat it by forcing them out of view on the charts. If we’re going to disallow event-based songs from charting because they’re inconvenient, why stop at the holidays? Let’s go all the way. No more Thriller and Monster Mash every Halloween. No more post-award show bumps for songs that are half a year old. No more returns of songs by artists who have just died. No more chart bombs by artists doing the Halftime Show.

This s**t is why the Billboard streams week can’t align with the airplay week. Are you sure though that Billboard needs to wait for these Spotify updates to update their weekly charts? They're tracking numbers such as Apple Music and Slacker that we can't see, so I'm almost certain that they don't need us to see the Spotify numbers for them to update. I wasn’t assuming they need the actual Spotify update, I was assuming the lack of an update meant Spotify has an issue of some kind and it could also affect Billboard getting the info. Regardless we know Billboard has said the streams and sales data takes longer to get, while airplay data is essentially immediately available. What is the delay in streaming data about, then?

Need You Now by Lady Antebellum went to #2. You're right, it did. But the peak listed is what the song's peak was at the time of the charting (which was #5 in this case).

Personally, I'm just eager for all these Christmas hits to fall off and for new, never-before-heard music to begin to chart. It's the start of a new decade soon, with loads of mainstream juggernauts prepping to show out for the year 2020. I'm also excited to see what new breakthrough acts we get in the new year. I feel like it'll be a wild year (and decade). MTE! I feel as if the first few years of the 2020’s will be great, but bittersweet also in the sense that the acts we grew up with will eventually hit a wall and no longer be the forces we once knew ie. Rihanna, Adele, Drake, Taylor Swift etc. Of course, they could all follow Madonna’s footsteps and be slaying their 40’s/50’s etc. but she’s an anomaly in itself. P.S: Do we know if Drake plans to release a solo project next year, or 2021 perhaps? Wasn’t their a French SONY exec. who said (leaked info) that Rihanna, Drake etc. would be releasing in December? It was all over Twitter. Well... 💀

Friendly reminder to keep this thread (as well as other Hot 100 threads) on topic, with discussion remaining tied to this current tracking week. If you see any off topic posts, remember to report those and as staff we will deal with them accordingly. In the meantime, you’re more than welcome to utilize the Hot 100 General Discussion thread (or, y’know, other, more appropriate areas of the board) to post these off topic comments.
Just because other people do it doesn’t mean you should too ;)

Mariah releasing a new music video makes it feel even more like it's a 2019 hit, you know? Not just a classic.

Mariah releasing a new music video makes it feel even more like it's a 2019 hit, you know? Not just a classic. It's a song from 1994 that hit #1 in 2019.

He'll be releasing a new album next year. He's been working on it at his home studio in Toronto for several weeks now.
