Who was an avid chart watcher in 1997? What kept “Candle in the Wind” selling so well for months? Its huge sales at first make sense, but what kept it going? Sales impacts from deaths now barely last a week or two. I was 16 and a chart watcher then. I can honestly say Princess Diana’s death was the highest profile death I’ve seen in my entire life. It’s like the world was in mourning. Not even Michael Jackson or Prince or Whitney even come CLOSE to the level of worldwide attention. Even after her death and funeral, there was a steady stream of news and shows discussing the circumstances and keeping her in the news. Also, the single’s proceeds went entirely to charity. And, it was an already classic song that a lot of people loved. It probably helped as well that the B-side got a healthy amount of airplay. And don’t forget, this was in an era as well when physical singles were already becoming increasingly rare, so it had less competition than a song might have today. My parents bought a copy of that CD and haven't even taken the plastic off. They're not avid collectors of music or anything and they knew what its value would be

With artists using TikTok as promotion, I suddenly remember Rae Sremmurd using the mannequin challenge to propel Black Beatles to number one. They really were ahead of the curve in using memes.

I mean, does it really matter? Are people gonna see AIWFCIY reenter next year and say "Look, there's that song that broke the record for biggest fall from #1, what a flop"? The price to pay from having a Christmas #1. The price? I think the only financial figure to care about here is the $60 million its made in royalties.

Seriously one of the most bizarre things related to Spotify/streaming 'payola'/'gaming' ever. I wonder if this song will rechart on Hot 100.

In 2015, Silento was LITERALLY asking multiple famous YouTubers to promote “Watch Me” on their channels. He was promising people personal meet-and-greets (on Twitter, IG) to those who uploaded their best “Watch Me” dance routines and of course many followed. Even in 2012, PSY was appearing in random “Gangnam Style” videos with the general public in South-Korea and in the U.K. 😂 Rae Sremmurd was just a product of their influence.

French Montana’s “Writing On The Wall” is up 148,000 plays and 27 spots to a new peak of 21 on Spotify.

Seriously one of the most bizarre things related to Spotify/streaming 'payola'/'gaming' ever. I wonder if this song will rechart on Hot 100. :tweets: Aha! That last one mentions Chinese music. Seems to support my theory that it's not someone on his team (at least directly) and is more likely bots from Asia (though could be paid off by someone on his team). The very same ones likely responsible for the large first day sales of random Asian singers on iTunes. And I seem to recall a smaller k-pop group being hit with it on Spotify at one time too.

The very same ones likely responsible for the large first day sales of random Asian singers on iTunes. And I seem to recall a smaller k-pop group being hit with it on Spotify at one time too. It's not only showing up next to Chinese music on people who have been hacked to be fair. Also the Kris Wu stuff had to do with an artist specifically trying to cross over to America with a huge label backing overseas. Lots of fans on forums were just trying to use VPNs to download their music. This is just absolutely random songs being played. People have said they have random French, Russian, Spanish, etc music being played on their accounts. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a site where you paid for Spotify click-farms (similar is done with fake YouTube views/subs, Twitter follows, etc) and these are somehow getting through notably without getting noticed yet. So there's lots of random artists of all varieties showing up who have people willing to shell out coins.

This has nothing to do with the Hot 100 When NoCap makes it onto the Hot 100, it will.
