That's a decent number of classics that didn't make the new list and/or just missed, my goodness...

A few more notes on this year 1. After ending the charts at the end of November last year, Billboard ended the original 1973 chart in the middle of November. They would end the 1974 chart at the end of October, which would spark a full decade of Billboard deciding November-October was an acceptable chart window. 2. If the longevity looks slightly longer on 1973 than previous years, that’s because Billboard decided to revoke the recurrent rule. Songs that fell below the top 50 were allowed to keep falling. 3. I didn’t realize the Monster Mash was re-released this year until I started working on the chart. The asterisk is for previously making the chart in 1962. 4. I find it interesting that this year had three hit songs about gypsies and three hit songs about space. I think that’s a good reflection of where the public’s mind was probably at this year. (Side note: I’m really sad Space Oddity got calculated out) 5. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t realize until working on this chart that Brooks & Dunn were not the original performers of My Maria. To be fair though, my knowledge of country music mostly begins in 1981. 6. If you want to know how old I am and how out of my depth I am doing these lists, for the longest time, I didn’t realize Dancing in the Moonlight was a real song. The first time I heard it was on the Disney Channel in like 2008, where this cover version was all I knew for the longest time. And if you want to know how broken my taste in music is, after listening to the King Harvest original and the covers...the Alyson Stoner version is still my favorite. Despite, well, pretty much everything about it.

To be fair, this new list now includes Photograph, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Knockin On Heaven’s Door. Plus, Let’s Get it On is now the YE1 I agree. The list looks a lot better with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Knockin on Heavens Door. Quite frankly, the biggest surprise is that Let’s Get It On finished #1 on here. I thought Tie a Yellow Ribbon would be a sure thing. However, I’m even more confident now that Seasons in the Sun will top the 1974 list.

Hey, if it makes you feel better, the first Selena Gomez song I remember hearing was her 2009 cover of Magic by Pilot, another song from the '70s that I didn't know existed until I first heard the original a decade later when going through the 1975 YE.

Will someone eventually do the 1970s for these lists? Yeah cause I'm waiting. My predictions are Midnight Train To Georgia will be in the top ten of that year Welp...I knew it... Multiple classics, Killing Me Softly, Touch Me In The Morning and Midnight Train To motherfreakin Georgia!!!! Also, Imagination, Neither One Of Us, Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. The way Gladys had the early-mid 70s in a chokehold!

I'm sad that Why Me isn't top 10 anymore, thought it would have a shot with the insane amount of weeks for the time but sadly too many of them were below the top 40 & it doesn't really belong there. If you adjust for strength between formulas there's some years of the 60's where it would have been top 10 though

The 1974. I've seen a lot of people refer to this as one of the worst years of all time. And after going through it, I gotta say the hype is real. Outside of a few classics, this year suuuuuuuuucks. But hey, bad years need chronicling too, and the 70s get a lot better from this point forward. Also, turnover atop the chart was insane this year, which led to a still-unbeaten record for #1s in a year and much weaker point totals near the top than previous years. Rank | Song | Artist | Peak | Top 10 | Hot 100 | Points | 1 | The Way We Were | Barbra Streisand | #1 (3 weeks) | 9 | 17 | 447,250 | 2 | Seasons in the Sun | Terry Jacks | #1 (3 weeks) | 8 | 21 | 426,190 | 3 | Bennie and the Jets | Elton John | #1 | 9 | 18 | 412,060 | 4 | The Streak | Ray Stevens | #1 (3 weeks) | 8 | 17 | 398,840 | 5 | Dancing Machine | Jackson 5 | #2 | 9 | 22 | 393,850 | 6 | Then You Came | Dionne Warwick & The Spinners | #1 | 8 | 19 | 364,280 | 7 | You Make Me Feel Brand New | The Stylistics | #2 | 8 | 25 | 360,590 | 8 | TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) | MSFB | #1 (2 weeks) | 6 | 18 | 353,370 | 9 | You Haven't Done Nothin' | Stevie Wonder | #1 | 7 | 19 | 349,330 | 10 | Nothing From Nothing | Billy Preston | #1 | 7 | 18 | 345,740 | 11 | Love's Theme | Love Unlimited Orchestra | #1 | 7 | 17 | 342,710 | 12 | Hooked On a Feeling | Blue Swede | #1 | 7 | 17 | 341,750 | 13 | (You're) Having My Baby | Paul Anka | #1 (3 weeks) | 6 | 15 | 339,090 | 14 | The Loco-Motion | Grand Funk Rainlroad | #1 (2 weeks) | 6 | 20 | 337,520 | 15 | Billy Don't Be a Hero | Bo Donaldson & The Weywoods | #1 (2 weeks) | 7 | 19 | 329,850 | 16 | Sundown | Gordon Lightfoot | #1 | 7 | 18 | 327,290 | 17 | Annie's Song | John Denver | #1 (2 weeks) | 7 | 17 | 321,890 | 18 | Band on the Run | Paul McCartney & Wings | #1 | 7 | 18 | 321,370 | 19 | Sunshine on My Shoulders | John Denver | #1 | 7 | 18 | 319,280 | 20 | Come and Get Your Love | Redbone | #5 | 5 | 23 | 312,590 | 21 | Rock Me Gently | Andy Kim | #1 | 6 | 18 | 309,790 | 22 | Feel Like Makin' Love | Roberta Flack | #1 | 6 | 16 | 306,990 | 23 | Jungle Boogie | Kool & The Gang | #4 | 7 | 22 | 305,300 | 24 | Boogie Down | Eddie Kendricks | #2 | 6 | 18 | 303,890 | 25 | You're Sixteen | Ringo Starr | #1 | 7 | 12 | 303,610 | 26 | Spiders and Snakes | Jim Stafford | #3 | 7 | 15 | 296,630 | 27 | Do It (Till You're Satisfied) | B.T. Surprised that The Way We Were still finished ahead of Seasons in the Sun. I would have thought TWWW having part of its run in late 1973 would have given the edge to Seasons in the Sun, but I guess TWWW was much higher on the all-time chart.

Gosh this cutoff is brutal. This might be the best 101/102 we've had so far. On to 1975. I'll be really happy if Pure Prairie League's "Amie" makes the list.

I’d also throw in the Barry White song as well. We can at least agree that all 4 of these are better than the song at 100.

The song I was saddest to lose was Living For the City. But it’s okay guys, instead of all those songs, we got Sweet Home Alabama. Side note: if YouTube existed in 1974, that song would have made all of those YT critics’ worst lists just for the line “Watergate does not bother me” mere months after Nixon resigned.

That is a very strange collection of songs, some of which did better in other years, obviously, some of which are classics, and some of which are completely obscure to me.

Not y'all sleeping on Then Came You. Literally, the best song of 1974 and Aretha's UYCBTM(TWIGD) follows super close behind and so does Gladys.
R&B was literally on fire this year.
I noticed how no one literally said anything about TWWW. LOL!

1973 and 1974 produced surprising results at #1, at least in my opinion. I thought for sure Tie a Yellow Ribbon was going to be #1 (that song had great longevity for its time, and there didn’t seem to be any song really close), whereas Seasons in the Sun would clearly beat out The Way We Were because all of Seasons run was in 74, while TWWW’s run was partly in 73.
One more thing before I let 73 and 74 go, 73 was the year The Doobie Brothers became big, and this was the song that did it:

Looking ahead to 1975:
The second version charted at #24 on the 2001 J-D list. Will the original outchart it? Who knows, maybe we're due for a third version in 2027.

The 1975 chart is here, and we're now kicking off the glory era of the 70s. Coming off 1974, this list is such a glow up. The only year-over-year improvement I can think to compare this to is 2018 to 2019. And that isn't just because it's the dawn of disco; every genre came out swinging this year. This year isn’t even the peak of the second half of the 70s, but it's a great introduction. Songs that missed
Calculated out: -Bungle in the Jungle -Get Dancin’ -I’m on Fire -Misty -Shoeshine Boy -Third Rate Romance
Made 1974: -Angie Baby -Cat’s in the Cradle -Do It (Til You’re Satisfied) -I Can Help -Kung Fu Fighting -Sha La La (Make Me Happy) -When Will I See You Again -You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet
Caught between years: -Doctor’s Orders -Junior’s Farm/Sally G -Mountain Side of the Morning -Never Can Say Goodbye -One Man Woman/One Woman Man -Only You -You Got the Love -You’re the First, My Last, My Everything
Quick note: I’m Sorry and Calypso were the Side A and Side B of the same single. I’m Sorry was the song that was promoted to radio, but midway through the chart run, Calypso began getting more airplay. Billboard decided to only count one song at a time, and this led to I’m Sorry’s chart run ending abruptly while it was at #2, and Calypso debuting at #2, with both songs only being credited with 9 weeks apiece. For this chart, I counted both songs’ chart runs as a single entity. This makes more sense to me, given that 100% of people who bought one song also bought the other, and both songs were still receiving airplay that contributed to each other’s chart runs. The same rule applies to Junior’s Farm and Sally G, though that song was caught between years anyways

How close (or far) was Amie from making the 1975 list?

Not close at all. It peaked at #27 and spent 13 weeks on the chart, only 3 of which were in the top 40.
Don’t feel too bad about that. Even though I knew it also had no chance, I was really hoping Born to Run could sneak in.
