Howโs it going with 2011 and 2010 Year End? Havenโt begun working on 2010. 2011 is wildly uneven. The first month was astoundingly strong (particularly in the top 20), while the last few months were equally weak for the bottom of the chart. Holding the points per position constant throughout the year produces an inaccurate chart no matter what those points are. That's basically the issue with 2009. The beginning is obviously stronger than the end, but it seems like the very end, maybe the last 8 weeks, were all also abnormally strong from 10-20 as Forever was able to make the year end list. And even then there's some total discrepancies, like Paparazzi is right at the end and it's beating a couple songs that were strong near the start of the year like Beautiful and Viva La Vida, even though I have those with more points than Paparazzi
Also with 2011 I think there was a formula change at some point. The way I dealt with the infamous 2007 chart year with its formula change is I multiplied the points of every week after Aug 11 2007 by .75. It worked shockingly well, putting Paralyzer in its seemingly impossible #98 position and matching up very well with the results of the actual year end list

That shouldnโt be the case. I think 2007 was the last formula change until streaming was added in 2012. To quote the billboard top 10 article from the week that streaming debuted: โAdditionally, the Hot 100's sales/airplay ratio has been adjusted to both accommodate the influx of additional streaming services to the chart's data pool and to slightly lessen the influence of sales, as the volume of digital downloads had increased exponentially since the chart's last formula modification in 2007.โ Also, if youโre having trouble finding the exact numbers, see if Billboard still has the top 10 articles from 2009. Unless theyโve been deleted, they should be on the writerโs homepage. www.billboard.com/author/gary-trust/253 Hopefully this helps. Itโs the back page which has his earliest articles, youโd have to go forward a decent amount to get to 2009, but hopefully Billboard hasnโt deleted the articles.

As for the total points, I would but I think Rockgolf already made a thread for that, and I donโt want to steal his idea. He didn't - at least not with raw point totals (I think his uses the inverse method). It just gives you an appreciation for those "hidden" big hits - for example, I had no idea how big "Fergalicious" or "Eastside" really were without adding up their point totals Fergalicious - ~652,000 which is enough for #7 for 2007 - pretty surprising - more than "Glamorous" and "Girlfriend" which made top 10 - we wouldn't know that unless there's a column for total points though Just a thought Appreciate the feedback. If I were to do this, it would be in a new thread. I wouldnโt want to start that until after Iโve finished with this one. Not to mention, raw points probably doesnโt do justice to years like 2013 and 2012, which both saw midyear formula changes that created a massive influx of points (2013 was particularly brutal for songs that had been carrying over from last yearโsongs like Locked Out of Heaven, Diamonds and especially Gangnam Style would probably have been much higher if their YouTube views had counted towards their point totals). Creating a fair and equitable system for songs in these situation while not misrepresenting real points would be a challenge.

I try to pump them out every two weeks. It gives me enough time to do the list while also having a regular schedule. So 2011 should be out by next Saturday.

Maroon 5's fantastic "Harder To Breathe" making to #83 on the 2003 Year-End while "She Hates Me" gets caught between years is such a beautiful sight. ๐
Also, given that you already shared the lists for both 2007 and 2008, was Paramore's "Misery Business" close to making any list?
Congratulations for both of you - you're doing a great job and these lists are so interesting.

Here's 2001, featuring Michelle Branch and who cares who else? It's possible It Wasn't Me made 2000 but I don't think so, I have it barely above Shackles and I think the 2000 cutoff is gonna be higher than the original list.

Maroon 5's fantastic "Harder To Breathe" making to #83 on the 2003 Year-End while "She Hates Me" gets caught between years is such a beautiful sight. ๐ Also, given that you already shared the lists for both 2007 and 2008, was Paramore's "Misery Business" close to making any list? Congratulations for both of you - you're doing a great job and these lists are so interesting. Misery Business sadly wasn't close to either Jan-Dec list. Despite 22 weeks in 2007 only six of them were in the top 40 and the end of that year got dropped hard thanks to a formula change.

On the topic of Michelle Branch I made some edits to the 2006 list. It was the first one I ever did and I didn't quite know what I was doing yet so I adjusted some songs at the start of the year, most of which I'd previously just subtracted an arbitrary number of points for. One Wish by Ray J falls to #102 after being #102 the year before. My girl Michelle has song #100 truly the best timeline. But you can maybe take that with a grain of salt it could have also been One Wish (179266), Summertime by Kenny Chesney (178450), or Miss Murder by AFI (179289) it's hard to know for sure with songs below 100
EDIT: I also realized I made a mistake wish Fresh Azimiz. It lost two weeks and falls off the list.

Not only did Beautiful Day miss, but It's Been Awhile (my least favorite hit of the year) made the Year-End Top 10, so while it's a shame that Michelle Branch missed, I still prefer our timeline's 2001 Year-End List.

After seeing the 2003 list is safe to say that Beyoncรฉ would have been the Top Female Artist of 2003 over Christina Aguilera and the #2 Artist overall after 50 Cent.

Songs that made the official list and missed here This I Promise You - made 2000 I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me) - caught Beautiful Day - caught I Wish - made 2000 (probably) Dance With Me - made 2000 So Fresh, So Clean - #104 E.I. - caught Most Girls - made 2000 Oochie Wally - #105 I'm guessing Hemorrhage (In My Hands) by Fuel also got caught between years.

Here's 2001, featuring Michelle Branch and who cares who else? It's possible It Wasn't Me made 2000 but I don't think so, I have it barely above Shackles and I think the 2000 cutoff is gonna be higher than the original list. Omg thank you for this! I'm shocked at Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like a Bird" outranking "Turn Off the Light" considering I'm Like a Bird peaked at #9 and Turn Off the Light peaked at #5 :O Great list!

Hm...I don't know how to feel about the 2001 list. All the songs I love are still in, and while it would be a real shame to lose "So Fresh, So Clean" and "Beautiful Day", three of my bottom 10 songs of the year ("Oochie Wally", "E.I.", and "I Wish") would also get caught, so I see it more as a win - for me, at least. (I feel so sorry for @gabingston though).
As for the new entries, sure, Nickelback would make its triumphant entry on my year of birth, but given that the criminally underrated "Emotion" would make it at #83 (hm...I sense a pattern), I'm not complaining.

Watching the 2001 Year End Chart, I would have to say that she was the Top Female Artist of that year. She ruled the Singlesโ Chart with โLove Donโt Cost a Thingโ, the Murder Remix of โIโm Realโ and the Christina Milian-sung โPlayโ.

Also how on earth is it in your bottom 10? Unless it's just because it's by R Kelly which is fair and valid

Yeah, I should have put a 'potentially' in there. To be fair, I ranked it at #91 when I was doing the Year-End rankdown (so it's only my tenth least favorite), and I was hesitating between it, "Crazy", and "Put It On Me" (the artist did influence my choice, admittedly). Fortunately, I wrote a little commentary on the reveal thread, so I'll just share it here: 91. I Wish: For me, it only won over "Fiesta" because it sounds decent and has a pretty great chorus with momentum. Everyone already said what had to be said about this - it's R. Kelly asking us to feel sympathy for him with regard to his struggles as a famous artist, and while this concept could have worked well under anyone else, R. Kelly makes it sound rather hypocritical, I guess, given all the accusations that came forth against him and the fact that people are giving him a hard time for a very good reason. However, I will say that the line ' How did I become the leader of a billion men?' is pretty excellent and does imply at some of the more messed up aspects of fandom culture, which only grew worse with the advance of social media.

Here's the 2000 chart. Bizarrely there's the exact same 5 repeaters with no additions or subtractions. There's a slight change that I Knew I Loved You would have made the 1999 list but I'm 99% sure it wouldn't. The 90's charts are more unfamiliar territory for me still. Also I'm pretty sure Smooth would be top 10 twice !HYPE!

Not entirely sure what would make the 1999 list that missed here. I Wanna Love You Forever and U Know What's Up for sure. Waiting For Tonight has a small chance.
As for the songs that were just too weak I have I Don't Wanna at #102 and Shackles at #104

Iโll never forget how Americans treated Oops!... I Did It Again. A WASTED #1 hit for Mrs. Spears.

"Smooth" making the top 10 twice would be so fitting for one of the biggest and most iconic songs of all time ๐
Glad to see "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down making to the Year-End top 10 as well. As for "I Wish", I don't mind it making it, especially since all of my favorite hits from 2000 would still be in. However, I really hope "Waiting For Tonight" doesn't get caught between years. ๐ค๐ผ๐ค๐ผ๐ค๐ผ
Additional comments: I find it a funny coincidence how "He Loves U Not" and "He Can't Love U" are back to back given how their titles are so similar. ๐ Also, the infamous "She Bangs" making the Year-End would make it such an easy punching bag for worst lists. Still better than "Oochie Wally", regardless.

I'm going to assume that Ludacris's first hit "What's Your Fantasy" would've been caught between 2000 and 2001 as it peaked in December of 2000.

Yeah sorry, I have the numbers mostly done, but my professors decided to pile me up with way too much work over the past week. Itโs the closing stretch of classes, so I canโt say itโs unexpected. When I can find an open 3 hours to publish the list, I will.
