Yeah, 2010 was easier since the point totals were overall a lot more consistent throughout the year. The late winter and late summer top 10s were a bit weaker than average, and the fall was stronger, but even using my inverse system, I predicted 99/100 songs, and the one song that did miss was the #100 song, which was only off by less than 1k points. So yeah, 2010 was fun in that regard. As for surprises, well, yβall will see tomorrow. The only thing Iβll say is that the top of the chart looks totally different. Daaaammmmmn you have an inverse system that put 1-99 all in the right order? No, itβs not quite that impressive π. I just meant that I had 99/100 of the songs that made the official top 100. Although in terms of the right order, the inverse was more accurate this year than any of the other 10 years Iβve done.

Thank you so much for this! mikerivera Do you know if Tik Tok had more total points than "Need You Now"?

Yeah, TiK ToK was stronger than Need You Now over their entire chart runs. Even though Need You Now had 22 more total weeks, TiK ToK was a really strong #1. It had over 610k sales in its first week at #1, which was the record for most by a female lead artist. It would have been worth about 55k points, and thatβs without the radio (keep in mind that sales werenβt weighted as heavily as they are today. With the current formula, that would be well over 100k points). Which is why it was so close to staying as the #1 song of the year even in this scenario.

Also, these point totals can only be taken for their years right?
Like if a song charted in 2 years, you can't add 2009 + 2010's points to make a total right?

I know in rockgolf's initial list, they listed "Need You Now" as bigger but I think it truly was "Tik Tok"

Also woah 2010 seems really weak in chart points XD Yeah it was, although part of that had to do with how the charts back then had a different formula that resulted in a lot less points than today. Notice how the 2011 and 2012 year ends were much weaker than all the previous charts too. Not to say that this chart wasnβt weak even for its time (it had the same formula as 2011, which is significantly stronger), but it is worth remembering that points are relative to their eras.

You hypothetically could, but I think Inverse was trying to make the point totals roughly equivalent to today. Which is fine, because I have a multiplier that shows what these songs would look like if the points were roughly equal to today (Lover, Lover would have about 168k points). I might make another thread for the decade list that accounts for all the formula changes in the future.

^ Yeah I think yours are generally more accurate because I couldn't find point lists for charts that old and so I'm sort of just having to guess how strong a week at #1 was based on where it finished on the year end list originally.
Absolutely shocked that #93-#96 made it over songs such as Please Don't Go. The beginning of the year must have been a behemoth of chart points

Yeah, the thing you gotta remember is that right around Christmas time, people get iTunes gift cards, so thereβs a bunch of people that buy songs that week. That ends up getting counted for the second week of January. It happens every year, but before streaming was counted, that caused massive point spikes for the top 20-30 songs. Itβs gotten less important as sales have declined and streaming has become dominant. But thatβs why 93-96 managed to stay on the chart, when if you looked at their chart runs, they would have been below Please Donβt Go.

Ohh so do you go back and find sales figures for that week or just boost the assigned points of songs charting that week by maybe 10000 points

Iβll usually use the billboard top 10 article to gather as much data as I can, and use that to help estimate the rest of the songs. I can usually account for all of the songβs point discrepancy doing that.

Because adding Bad Romance's 2009 + 2010 points gives it more than California Gurls - but I'm pretty sure "California Gurls" was a bigger hit so that's why I asked :)

Been awhile since this thread was made but, surprise! Here's 1998
I didn't want to do this one because it's just conceptually a broken idea. The last four weeks of the 1998 calendar year (aka the first four weeks of the 1999 chart year) used an entirely different formula and 61 songs immediately debuted the first week because airplay-only songs were finally allowed to chart. So a bunch of 1998's songs fell off from high positions and the last four weeks were obviously way stronger than the rest of the year (see song #94 which peaked at 17 and only got 10 weeks). But then I had the idea that despite, or even because of, the numerous problems here, it would probably be fun to just bask in the absurdity of this whole thing. Beyond that the summer/fall were just astonishingly weak for no apparent reason so a ton of really small songs from the beginning of the year made it along with a couple extremely low peaks. So yeah this is a mess, enjoy!

Of the songs from the original list absent here
My Love is the Sh All Cried Out The One I Gave My Heart To You Were Meant For Me/Foolish Games Butta Love 4 Seasons Of Loneliness
all made the original 1997 list so they're just gonna get their positions bumped up. Of the other three I think Sock It 2 Me has a small chance, Heaven and Spice Up Your Life got caught

Does someone have an idea of how 2020 YE chart is going to look like, based on this methodology?

Here's the 1997 chart. Not sure how accurate this is or how many of them I'm going to do, a couple of songs at the start or end of the year might be + or - 5 spots or so

Of the misses, the songs that made the original 1996 list are
It's All Coming Back To Me Now (#101) Pony Last Night Macarena Twisted You're Makin' Me High
The others were probably all caught between years I Finally Found Someone (#104) Fly Like An Eagle (#103) No Time When You're Gone (sadface) I Like It You Must Love Me

Does someone have an idea of how 2020 YE chart is going to look like, based on this methodology? Yes, and I will be posting a 2020 chart at the end of the year.

Oh my goodness! YES at Fiona Apple and the Bee Gees making the 1997 Year-End under the January-December period. That would have been so great!

Here's the January-December year end for 2019 by my formula. 1. Old Town Road 2. Sunflower 3. bad guy 4. Wow. 5. Without Me 6. Talk 7. Truth Hurts 8. Sucker 9. 7 Rings 10. SeΓ±orita Looking at this a year later, with the exception of Talk and Wow., I think is this actually a very representative Top 10 for what 2019 mainstream music was. OTR-Sunflower-bad guy is one of the most blockbuster Top 3's of the decade.

Now that this thread is back on the front page of Pulse, I can acknowledge that with the most recent update to the 2019 January-December Year-End, AIWFCIY knocking Eyes On You off that chart is a massive W.

Idk, I thought Talk and Wow were pretty inescapable last year. Kind of irrelevant in 2020, but then again, you could say that about a lot of songs from last year, including songs like SeΓ±orita, Truth Hurts and No Guidance, all of which will make the 2020 YE

Looking ahead, there are 10 carryover songs that made the official 2020 list and will miss the J-D list (plus All I Want For Christmas is You, but I expect that to make this year too). Lemonade, Holy, One Beer and Bang are already past the cutoff. The contenders to make the last 6 spots to make it are:
-Tap In -Kings & Queens -I Should Probably Go to Bed -Midnight Sky -Pretty Heart -Happy Anywhere -7 Summers -Some Girls -What You Know About Love -Hawai -Positions -BS -My Exβs Best Friend -Franchise -Love You Like I Used To -You Broke Me First -Starting Over -Wonder -Diamonds -Levitating -Forever After All -Lonely -Rockin Around the Christmas Tree -Dakiti -Better Together
Iβve listed them in order of their current point totals. My prediction is that the last 6 will be Tap In, Kings & Queens, I Should Probably Go to Bed, Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, Midnight Sky and Positions. Midnight Sky is the one Iβm most unsure about though. I think the closest misses will be Dakiti, Levitating and Lonely.

I counted nine holdovers from 2019 (Circles, Someone You Loved, No Guidance, Senorita, Bad Guy, Trampoline, Truth Hurts, Panini and Only Human), am I missing one?

I meant among songs that will miss this YE. Songs like Circles and SYL are gonna make it. Not all the songs Iβm referring to actually made the 2019 list, but they charted for too many weeks in 2019 to make the 2020 list
