I don't think "Chlorine" or "The Hype" got these updates. So what's going on now?
Not that I'm complaining or anything.

If you asked me which established band during this current global health crisis would take opportunity of the situation by releasing a last minute disco-ish feel-good song that explicitly mentions the quarantine and show their newborn in the video in an attempt for a hit, my answer would be Maroon 5. I can't help but see this as a sell-out coming from TOP no matter how much of a bop it is. This is no different than a folk artist doing a social-commentary song. Yes, I see your point, but it has happened for a long time. You can also look it from the other side, and say they’re trying to make a positive moment in a negative situation. We all need a break to dance our worries away. I don't think "Chlorine" or "The Hype" got these updates. So what's going on now?Not that I'm complaining or anything. Timing lol Yes, timing and this > Chlorine. The Hype though should have had more success. This is also a fresh new single so new stuff usually gets initial spins at the beginning. (I think this isn’t tied to an era). What singles were ahead of those? Because if those were the 3rd and 4th singles, the interest starts to die that late into the era, especially if the first two didn’t gain that much traction. Again this is much more radio friendly and instant than the singles of “Trench.”

I'm lost in this discussion. How are they "selling out" (and what the hell does that even mean? such a snobbish term imo)? They always had that Pop/Alternative sound.

Again this is much more radio friendly and instant than the singles of “Trench.” From "Trench", "Jumpsuit" was first; that smashed immediately at Alt but wasn't really intended for CHR (too abrasive in sound/style). "My Blood" was next, and sounded more commercial radio friendly but only grazed the CHR top 30. (Maybe it should have been first?) "Chlorine" did about the same and "The Hype" a little less, though it did get to the CHR top 40 after the album was about a year old.

FUCK YES THIS IS AWESOME
I wasn't really a fan of the last album aside from a few tracks. This is great though. Way better than anything on Trench.

The difference between this and Maroon 5 is that this is actually a good song without 100 co-writers

How is this remotely a sell out move? They're a famous and popular alt rock band and when you listen to their last two albums this progression makes total sense. It fits right in with tracks like My Blood and Chlorine to my ears. Also as much as I'm generally not a fan of coronavirus lyrics the song makes total sense and works outside of that context as well, plus they're donating earning from this song to charity and aren't nearly as shameless as some other songs have been in their virus references. also it just bumps

Getting ready for this to dominate at #1 on alternative for the next few weeks. I don’t know how pop and AC will respond to this though but so far it’s looking good.

Oh, NOW CHR cares about 21P, after snubbing them for making Trench full of good songs instead of trying to force in overproduced pop sounds and hooks like this one does.
Goes to show that CHR wants everything to conform to one universally accepted "sound" as opposed to being a mixture of different, unique voices, regardless of the genre.
This is still a good song, albeit a step down from the majority of Trench, but the dance-ability and poppiness is definitely turned up here by 21P's standards. They were definitely pressured to get a hit and they manufactured one, but I hope they do more of what they want for the next album after they made this song to make the label happy.

Trench's problem goes beyond lack of "poppiness" of its tracks and i think have a lot to do with how they botched the push for its singles in pop tbh. The early singles didnt get any push in pop until its too late and the later singles also felt like its not getting proper push from the label.
