Funny people here keep saying "Smile" would be a bad single because people I know who don't care for her usually like it a lot... I was surprised when I had friends saying "WoW I actually like a Katy Perry song". lol I love "Smile" and don't get the dislike for it. I'm a very casual Katy fan though. Maybe it's more her fans that don't like it?? I guess we'll see what happens. I personally never bought into "Daisies" I usually get most lead/hyped up singles but not this one.

Well, the mv for Smile is ready and will be released on August 14 so they might just make it the next single. After the birth, she can release another single.

I didn’t care for Daisies when it first came out but it has grown on me a lot over time especially with the performances, remixes, and acoustic version. Now I love it. For Smile, it was the opposite. I liked Smile instantly but it has burnt on me over time, faster than the other 3 songs on her upcoming album.

I agree. I don’t even think Smile is better than Small Talk. There has to be something better.

I'm sure there are better songs on the album but she won't be able to do anything for 2-3 months at least, why waste a potential great single when she has a song that already has a video?

Since it's getting a new video, maybe she can serve Harleys In Hawaii justice and push that one

Because if Smile flops (and everything so far indicates it will), the era will be over. She doesn't need to do much. Her label can put it on playlists and send it to radio and if the song is strong, it will carry itself, like all songs do now. It's not like working her face off to perform Daisies everywhere yielded more results than a #1 placement on TTH and a better run on pop radio would have. She has those visuals for every song anyway (although I'm assuming they're not gonna be real videos), so even that box is kinda ticked

I wouldn't mind "Smile" being a single if it were released during 2010-2013. I mean everything is an uphill battle for her in regards to getting radio success that she's was well accustomed to. I get that she's in a place where she's trying to mature her sound and give audiences something else and I don't think "Smile" is the kind of song that will achieve that.
"Harley's In Hawaii" is what I think would have been the perfect mix between a more mature yet classic Katy song. But with them not sending it to radio when it was fresh, we never got to see how it would fare. Personally, I'm definitely on board if they were to re-release it though but I'm not sure if it would be the best decision.

If there’s nothing else, it would be a great decision. I’ve heard talk of Teary Eyes being next tho? Who knows.

Yeah I read somewhere that Teary Eyes is planned to be a single but not until September. Katy definitely needs something before that. I’m voting for a HIH re-release to hold radio over and then see which song from the album is resonating most with people and send that to radio in the fall.

Let's take the terrible numbers it has done so far on streaming and sales as a much bigger indicator of success than what our friends say they like. But btw, two friends already told me they felt "Smile" was a big letdown after a relatively strong string of singles. And one of them is a huge Katycat who plays OOTB daily lol.

^ I was highly disappointed in Daisies and Smile after loving every single she released last year, I could live with Daisies but it's a bit of a bore tbh. Smile isn't any better though, and it won't make a dent here.
HIH is the way to go or something unreleased. She definitely should not release Smile as the second single.

I don't get the dislike for "Smile" either. I find it every bit as infectious as "Never Really Over," "Harleys in Hawaii," and this. I get the distaste for the bridge because of its emptiness, but the rest of the song is pure pop bliss. Reminds me of "Birthday."
I don't know about it being a single, but I don't understand the hate for it just as a song.

I’m gonna say something so vile, and I’m gonna get so much crap for it, but it’s the only thing that I can think of. I was stanning hard for Katy during the TD/Prism eras, and then she completely lost me with Witness. Swish Swish was good enough and Save as Draft is the only thing I’ll listen to again from that album. And the biggest difference I notice is Dr. Luke (god why does that feel like saying Voldemort these days). The same thing happened with Kesha IMO. He’s a horrible human being but his collaborations with both ladies (and Max Martin) just hit so much harder. I feel like Katy and Kesha are trying so hard to reclaim that sound, but nothing they’ve done since comes close.
I will take the tomatoes now...

I think Kesha's Rainbow album is her best work & "Never Really Over" and "Harleys in Hawaii" are two of Katy's best releases ever. So I don't think they need Dr Luke or their music was good only because of Dr Luke. I think both artists failed to adapt to the shifting dynamics of the industry, while their fans grew up and apart from them. We saw this begin in PRISM and Warrior eras—both were very successful, but had misses and mismanaged elements. Witness and Rainbow eras, both very tough for the artists and personal, failed to connect and kind of confirmed that both of them had passed their prime on Pop Radio & Hot 100. It's okay though, Katy could live off of "Firework" and Kesha "Tik Tok" alone, probably. They aren't chasing hits anymore, but making music they like, it seems, and that's important and good for them. I say this as a retired KatyCat—I was a stan from 2010-17 (yes, I loved "Rise") but she lost me with Witness.

I was always a bigger Kesha stan, but Katy had me with the Roar-Unconditionally-Dark Horse triple. I couldn’t bear to sit through Witness and High Road upon first-listens, which made me so sad because I still root for these two talented women. Just haven’t been able to connect to anything they’ve released lately as hard as I try. Maybe it’s time for a Katy/Kesha/Gaga collab. The 2010 girls can reclaim their glory days.

I think Rise was handled terribly. It could’ve easily done a lot better than it did.

Let’s not forget that Katy made some magic on Teenage Dream and Prism without Dr Luke. Firework was produced by Stargate and Walking On Air was produced by Max Martin & Klas Ahlund. Plus, Witness still had some bops that were reminiscent of her glory days: CTTR and Act My Age are two examples.
Also, I agree that NRO and HIH are really good and Top 10 in Katy’s discography! (at least for me)

365 and Never Really Over weren't bad either. She could create just as much magic with Zedd if she wanted to.

Katy should collaborate with Calvin Harris again. Feels was one of the boppiest tunes of 2017. But I’d love to hear what Calvin could do with Katy on a track similar to One Kiss or TIWYCF. 365 and Never Really Over weren't bad either. She could create just as much magic with Zedd if she wanted to. I read somewhere that Zedd helped produce the Smile track “Cry About It Later”. It might be fan spec but I remember reading it somewhere long before the tracklist even leaked.

I think for 2020 Katy Perry this did great. I like it but I'm ready for the next single.
Get into the acoustic of this by the way. She is serving vocals.
