In all honesty, I was stuck offline for about a day and a half and by that point, I'd have guess Tanooki would have taken roadblock already.
Had some highlights and some lowlights. But at the end, all is fine.
Now I'm wearing the judge's hat and if you saw my efforts in the folk round on Last Stand, I tend to be a bit tough.
Basically, I'm Simon. Without the British accent, improprieties and millions of dollars.

here's our exit interview with The Steel Porcupines, @humanshazam & House Lannister
how do you feel about your time in the race?
shazam: i had a lot of fun! i wasn’t sure what to expect while participating, but the challenges were always interesting and kept me engaged in the game. it would’ve been cool to finish at a higher placement but tbh i was just content enough finishing above Gabe.
Brian: It was too short. I felt like I worked well with Shazam and our teamwork was pretty good.
do you think you could've/should've done anything different?
shazam: i think we handled the game pretty well. despite some big stumbles, we had some solid ass placements and managed to make top 10! i guess the one regret i have is not sending “Alex Chilton” by The Replacements for the song named after a famous person roadblock, since i love that song, but i have no idea how that would’ve done score-wise
Brian: The judging has improved from part 1. But so has the competition! To be honest, I did want to mix it up and pick more modern selections after falling last year with Bohemian Rhapsody and Kiss from a Rose. I did succeed in that goal, but I would have loved to have won a leg or even made top 3. Still, I enjoyed the time I've got to work with Shazam. Song selection wise, my only regret was not seeing what others would have thought of Maitre Gims.
any predictions?
shazam: it’s hard to have any solid predictions but I’m fully endorsing The Golden Ducks for the win! 🦆🇦🇺
Brian: This is tough, but I'm going with Fire and Desire, Dylo and Latino Gang for top 3.

Brian: Song selection wise, my only regret was not seeing what others would have thought of Maitre Gims.
Maitre Gims might still have been a little divisive (not sure which song you were thinking of, I've heard "J'me tire", "Est-ce que tu m'aimes?", "Sapés comme jamais", and "La même" so it's not like I have even close to a full view of his discography) - if you were thinking of a French artist I imagine Stromae would've fared better, I think people generally seem to like "Papaoutai" and "Alors on danse" (and maybe some other songs? but I feel like these are his two most mentioned songs).

getting their first win of the season we have...1. The Lights (walt91 & Lukas )Overall Score: 70.5 | Roadblock Rank: #1 | Detour Rank: #4 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.2Roadblock Results:(Sent by Walt)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a wonderful little tune. I grew up on a bunch of mid century jazz so this is right up my ally! I think all the instruments here come together really nicely, and overall this is just a great chill jazz track! (9.5)Samo: I did enjoy this, but I’m not really seeing what everyone else is. I know I’ll get s**t for this, but I don’t personally think the track’s quality justifies it being almost 10 minutes long, though I still like the song a fair bit. (7.4)gates: Yo you really gave birth to the cool with this pick (9)shazam: now THIS is the type of stuff i really wanted to see here! i sadly don't know as much about jazz as i'd like to, but it's hard to not see why Kind of Blue is considered one of the greatest jazz albums. "So What" is the definition of cool. the track never gets too hurried or superfluous, it always maintains a restrained but confident tone. the tones on all the instruments here are impeccable, with the earthy upright bass, mellow keys, and bright trumpet all taking me back in time to a dimly lit cafe at 2 am. Miles Davis grabs his trumpet and takes the listener on a journey wherever he pleases. even the most subtle of moments contain a pocket of passion, and it's all carried out through Davis' genius. i still feeling like i'm not writing enough here lol, this track is just truly incredible. (9.7)Overall Score: 35.6Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: my favorite TLC song! the beat is really unique and also very catchy lol. I really enjoy the sentiment of the lyrics and I think there’s some strong lines in there. the vocals are also super smooth, great track! (9.7)
Samo: I have a lot of nostalgia for this, but ignoring that it’s still a really great song with some fantastic storytelling in the verses and stellar performances from everyone. The song’s groove is also pretty amazing, and fits the song’s more serious tone surprisingly well. (9.7)
Carrie: This one has a nice funky groove to it...I feel like I'd heard it before but I can't place when or where. Anyways, this one is a nice song to relax and just vibe to. I love that chorus!!! (8)
Brian: T Boz’s vocals are decent and serviceable. The writing on this song is the draw here telling a story of several people who make big mistakes. Left Eye’s rapping is serviceable. The background music is solid. I was big on this back in the day, but it’s lost some appeal to me. (7.3)
Overall Score: 34.7

rising into the top 2 for the first time we have...2. ;-; (shruggie & DistrictTwelve)Overall Score: 69.7 | Roadblock Rank: #2 | Detour Rank: #7 | Bonus From Last Leg: +1.2Roadblock Results:(Sent by D12)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this song has all sorts of super catchy melodies in it. I really like the electronic production, and I think it really shows what Daft Punk is capable of! (9.5)Samo: I wasn’t really feeling this for the first minute or so, but the rest of the song is pretty great! It manages to be incredibly danceable without sounding like many other early 2000s house tracks, and doesn’t overstay its welcome. (8.2)gates: Yo you really captured a band of blue aliens with this pick (8.1)shazam: Daft Punk's Discovery is easily one of my favorite albums, period, and Aerodynamic is one of the highlights off the album. this track just slaps you in the face with an onslaught of glimmering colors, and it doesn't hold back. it's a space journey filled with twists and turns, whether it be the funky, playful house intro or the noodley and shimmering guitar theatrics that steal the show. Daft Punk are kings at creating house tracks that don't sound like typical house tracks, and what better example than "Aerodynamic". it really feels like what i'd hear at a space party set in the year 2100 while sharing a drink with an alien buddy, superb track (9.3)Overall Score: 35.1Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I really like the production on this song. the mix of classic instruments with more modern production is nice! I’ve just never loved Jess Glynne as a singer though lol. the song is still pretty good though (8)
Samo: It might be the most basic choice here, but it’s still a fantastic song that’s held up incredibly well for me after 6 years of listening to it. This is probably the best production Clean Bandit’s ever had, and Jess Glynne sounds great as usual. (9.8)
Carrie: I love this one! I love the production of it, especially when it hits the chorus and there's a bit of a disco-pop vibe going on. I also love Jess Glynne's vocals here! I assume that's the one singing. I've never heard of her so I'm gonna have to put her on my radar soon! (9)
Brian: Nice use of violins. Jess Glynne gives a solid vocal performance. Song is a bit too busy in places, particularly in the chorus as the electronics prove distracting. One of those songs I enjoyed at the time, but it's slipped a bit for me. (6.6)
Overall Score: 33.4
congrats on finally making it into the top 2 - the only question now is can you pull out a win? you'll be getting a +1 bonus next leg

bouncing up big we have...3. Fire & Desire (Fire & ry4n )Overall Score: 69.6 | Roadblock Rank: #3 | Detour Rank: #1 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0Roadblock Results:(Sent by ry4n)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a very solid dance track! I like the energy it gives off, and the different melodies and instrumentation choices make this a truly stand out dance song! (9.4)Samo: This is one of the only songs in this set I’d heard of before, but I’m only listening to it now, and I’ve been missing out. The piano line is definitely the song’s best asset, but the rest is also really good. The propulsive beat helps keep the song interesting without overshadowing the more melodic elements. (8.5)gates: Yo you really ollied the oildrum with this pick (6.7)shazam: now whoever sent this REALLY did their research! trance is a pretty niche (and somewhat dated) genre of EDM, and especially this particular subgenre of dream trance. this has always been one of my favorite dance songs, though. this track is straight up euphoric, ethereal, and entrancing. the centerpiece of "Children" is the piano section; it has a vulnerable, human sound while also sounding omnipresent, and larger than life. "Children" is enormous while still remaining spacious, being propelled through its runtime by the steady beat typical of the style. it's heavenly, it's danceable, it's emotional to the core, and it's a classic of its genre in my eyes. (9.6)Overall Score: 34.2Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: the opening to this is pretty alright, but once the beat kicks in a little more is when I really start to like this one. I think Hayley Williams’ vocals are really good and the song also has some great energy to it. doesn’t hurt that it’s catchy af haha (9.3)
Samo: I was really hoping someone would send Paramore for this theme, and luckily it’s one of their best. The verses aren’t exceptionally memorable, but that chorus . The lyrics are also really well-written and relatable. (9.3)
Carrie: Whoever picked this--amazing choice y'all!!! You hit a home run. At the beginning I was like "okay, we're gonna get a nice slow ballad, love that" and I was pleasantly surprised when the beat suddenly dropped. Two things I absolutely love about music is when a song juxtaposes sad lyrics with a happy production and music's ability to connect with the listener. They feel like they can identify with the lyrics, they can relate, they could've written the song themselves. This song did both things and for me, I relate hard to the If I smile with my teeth/I think I believe me and I bet everybody here is fake happy too lines. What a beautiful song, and I also love that Paramore's voice reminded me of Avril Lavigne! (10)
Brian: Gets off to a rough start even though it sets up its premise. Hayley’s vocals recover after a rough start. Guitars aren’t bad here, the pianos are less so. The lyrics are nicely done. I think you could have picked a better song from Paramore. (6.8)
Overall Score: 35.4

slipping a bit from the previous leg we have...4. Sambal Wrap (Sambalada & wrip)Overall Score: 69.1 | Roadblock Rank: #6 | Detour Rank: #2 | Bonus From Last Leg: +1.9Roadblock Results:(Sent by wripwrap)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: there’s some absolutely stellar guitar work on this song. it really carries the whole track. I think the drums also fit it quite well! (9)Samo: Johnson’s guitar skills are impressive, but there isn’t much happening in the song aside from the guitar, which can cause it to drag on when the song is over 5 minutes long. It’s still one of my favourite songs of the set because it sounds great, but it’s one of the less interesting songs here. (8.3)gates: I gotta chalk it up to you, this was a good flint (7)shazam: this track is a little bit of a meme, sure, but i can't deny the technical prowess behind the song. it's pretty rare that you hear a "shredding" song that sound this straight up happy, but damn if this track isn't 5 minutes of straight merriment. my main issue with this track, however, is that the soloing is pretty much the only thing in focus here. it feels like a platter of all the different guitar tracks you could show off, mushed into a 5 minute span. Johnson is obvoiusly a very technically skilled guitarist, and he rocks out here, but the track feels a bit "empty" when all he's doing is showing off how he can shred. not to say this makes the track bad by any means, i just always wished there was a bit more to this track than noodling. (7.5)Overall Score: 31.8Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this is peak 60s pop! I think the vocals are really pretty and the song is also quite catchy. there’s also some pretty good lines mixed in here! (9)
Samo: I’ve seen this win rounds in both Amazing Race and Last Stand, and listening to it for the first time I can certainly see why. The production has aged really well, especially the guitar (?) riff that sounds great despite repeating the same few notes. (8.9)
Carrie: I didn't much like this song at all when I first heard Reba McEntire's version from her 1995 covers album Starting Over, but as I listened to her version a number of times I grew to appreciate it more and more. This version is the supreme version tho (see what I did there ) because sometimes you just can't beat the original! (9)
Brian: Great vocals by Diana Ross. Solid lyrics. Nice backup vocals. Background noises are a bit annoying. Not sure why that just had to end suddenly, but nice selection. (8.5)
Overall Score: 35.4
though you did slip from last leg, this is actually your highest placement without the Fast Forward in play, so congrats in that regard! you'll get a +0.6 bonus next leg

staying consistently in their "zone" we have5. Latino Gang 😎 (MoD & Leo ✔ )Overall Score: 67.6 | Roadblock Rank: #5 | Detour Rank: #5 | Bonus From Last Leg: +1Roadblock Results:(Sent by MoD)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a very tense track, but I think it really works (especially in the context of the movie). I think the strings are really eerie, but I definitely dig the vibe they go for quite a bit. (9)Samo: This does an excellent job of creating an unsettling tone, especially for a song with relatively minimal production, but that unfortunately also means it can be a little repetitive upon repeated listens. (7.7)gates: Yo you really fit in the red dress with this pick (7.8)shazam: Kronos Quartet are some of my favorite classical performers (i love their take on a few Reich pieces), so i'm stoked to see them here. Lux Aeterna is an example of where subtlety in melodic choices can reign supreme over something bombastic and showy. during the entire duration of the piece, all of the instruments create sheer tension just through sustaining the notes just a little too long for comfort. the track truly feels so much more grand than the sum of its parts, creating the aura of a full orchestra with only four instruments. i haven't seen Requiem for a Dream but i've known this piece from the soundtrack for ages, and i can already imagine the high-intensity type of scene this would create a soundscape for. (8.2)Overall Score: 32.7Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I like this song! I think the production is really cool, and I dig the vocals as well. the lyrics are also pretty nice and interesting! (9)
Samo: This really is the round of songs I want to like way more than I do, huh. I can see why this is so loved between the lyrics and production, but I just don’t like John R.E.M.’s vocals in a lot of their songs, and it’s especially a problem here. (7.4)
Carrie: I really liked this one as well! The vocals were a bit too repetitive in the sense that the person singing...literally sang the same notes the whole time BUT the great lyricism makes up for it in spades. I also very much liked the production in this one as well. (8.5)
Brian: Good intro. Solid vocals from Michael Stipe. Great lyrics dive into the ramifications of the title. Solid guitars with nice drums. Great choice. (9)
Overall Score: 33.9

taking a bit of a tumble we have...6. The Mild Dislikers of Justin Bieber (@matthewlam & tanooki)Overall Score: 67 | Roadblock Rank: #4 | Detour Rank: #8 | Bonus From Last Leg: +1.4Roadblock Rank:(Sent by Tanooki)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: quite the iconic track! it’s really impossible to listen to it without thinking of Darth Vader, and even if I’m not really a big Star Wars fan I think it works quite well as a theme for him. I also just enjoy it on a composition level haha (9.1)Samo: Lol. I like this as it is, and it’s also helped by being one of the more engaging songs here. Like a lot of songs here I don’t think I’ll be returning to it in the future, but it’s still an impressive song, and the last minute of the song is great. (7.8)gates: Yo you really used the force with this pick (8.2)shazam: it's pretty impossible to separate this track from Darth Vader lmao. John Williams has a knack for creating really cinematic and theatrical classical pieces, and this is no exception. imo far and away the best part of this song is the last ~30 seconds. the track comes to a menacing climax, with the steady thump of the march pounding out. at the same time, the descending run of notes makes this feel downright sinister. i do wish the track did more to build up to that closing, because man does it rip. i will add that the woodwind section really adds a cool layer to the song; it feels fluttery and fantastical, almost hinting at a weaker side to the Sith Lord himself. no doubt an iconic piece though, and a very solid choice. (7.9)Overall Score: 33Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a solid rock tune! I especially like the guitars here. overall this is so much better than what Green Day has been putting out recently! (8.6)
Samo: Green Day has a lot of good songs, but this isn’t one of my absolute favourites. I quite like the production, particularly the drums, and the lyrics aren’t bad, but I find it difficult to remember anything about this song once I’m done listening to it. (7.8)
Carrie: I've never really been a fan of Green Day, but this one is a bit of an exception. I love the lyricism, but I do wish the production would've done a bit more. Towards the end of the bridge it felt like it was heading that direction, but then it went straight back to the same repetitive riff heard throughout the entire song. That did hinder the enjoyment of this one a bit. (7)
Brian: Kicks off with a great guitar riff. Billie Jo offers solid vocals. The lyrics are fine. The guitars hold through until the end and the drummer holds its own. The lyrics are solid. Strong selection. (9.2)
Overall Score: 32.6

staying steady this week is...7. Dylo (Mylo13 💜 & Daryl the Beryl )Overall Score: 65.7 | Roadblock Rank: #7 | Detour Rank: #6 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.4Roadblock Results:(Sent by Mylo)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this is just a masterclass of how to do a slow build up over the course of a song. I also really like after the tension of the song released and the last little bit is very quiet (8.7)Samo: The song’s crescendo is pretty good, but I have a really hard time remembering anything else about the song if I haven’t just listened to it. I’m sure there are some situations where this would be a more effective track, but I’m not really feeling this. (6.8)gates: Yo you really promised them women with this pick (7.4)shazam: i was wondering where i recognized this from, and it's from THAT scene in 28 Weeks Later. whoever sent this knows me well, because i looove me a good post-rock track like this. In the House - In a Heartbeat is a damn anxiety track in 4 minutes; each chord is just dissonant and nasty enough to get the point across that you're in great danger. even with a chord progression as simple as this, the crescendo combined with the harrowingly clashing tones make this an absolute monster of a track. this seems like a left-field choice to me, but it sure payed off (at least for me!) (8.9)Overall Score: 31.8Detour Results:(Folk Affinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a gorgeous little track. the instrumental here is perfect and the vocals fit it super well. I love all the detail in the lyrics, and the song has all the vibes lol. great track (9.9)Samo: I mentioned this when “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” was sent, but I’m normally not a massive fan of Sufjan’s music, and this is a great example of that. The production is nice enough, but doesn’t keep my interest well, and unlike “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” the lyrics aren’t gripping enough for me to give this a higher score. (7.3)Carrie: I love this song too! The lyricism, the cooled-down vibe of the song, the production...I love all of it. I've been a pretty damn nice judge for the most part, and this is the third perfect score I've given! lmao (10)Brian: Nice guitar playing to start. Surfjan’s vocals are decent, I do wish they went beyond a whisper. At times, the production is a bit rough with the instruments threatening to overwhelm the singing. The lyrics are solid, though. (6.3)Overall Score: 33.5you two barely dodged the bottom 2 this week, so you're still in the race, but you will not be getting a bonus next legthe first team in the bottom two this week is...8. Canadeam (matteeeb & lyhom )Overall Score: 65.6 | Roadblock Rank: #9 | Detour Rank: #3 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.8Roadblock Results:(Sent by lyhom)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: a nice groovy little track, but I think it’s a little too short. I do like the laidback groove of it though! (8.4)Samo: In a group of songs like this, this stands out as an interesting pick, and one of my favourites of the set. It’s different to a lot of what I’ve heard from Calvin, but still very enjoyable and fun despite its much shorter length. (8)gates: Yo you really educated the class with this pick (6.2)shazam: this was an interesting pick. Calvin Harris is no doubt a talented DJ, and he's pretty versatile at that. this shows off his funky, disco-tinged side of his material pretty nicely. the bass throughout this is bouncy, and the warm layer of synths creates a fun, summery soulful sound. i do feel like this functions more as an interlude type of track, especially given the length; i don't think the melody is as hooky as it could've been either. i was honestly surprised this came off of 18 Months, the funk-infused style makes it sound like it could've come out yesterday. this was pretty good, though, and a cool pick in this diverse round. (7.3)Overall Score: 29.9Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this is a nice track! I think the guitars are really pretty, and the vocals fit them well. I also like the theme that’s gone for in the lyrics here! great track! (9.5)Samo: I’d forgotten how good this was, even if it’s no Iris. The guitars are beautiful, and the lyrics about growing us as an orphan contrast well with the more upbeat instrumental. (8)Carrie: Anything that could pass as a downhome country song has my heart and this is one of those songs. The production is top-notch for my country ass and I LOVE the lyrics. All around, this one is beautiful. (10)Brian: Solid opener. The vocals from John Goo Goo Dolls isn’t bad. Guitars and drums are solidly done. It’s not bad, but the Dolls have had better songs that you could have sent. (7.4)Overall Score: 34.9and in dead last is...9. The Golden Ducks (willapted33 & Web )Overall Score: 59.4 | Roadblock Rank: #8 | Detour Rank: #9 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.6Roadblock Results:(Sent by Will)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I absolutely love the instruments used here. I also think the song gives off a very chill, yet still tense vibe, which works well for the film it accompanies haha. (9.3)Samo: It’s a pleasant song, but also one that isn’t particularly memorable. The song does pick up for the last minute, but it’s still just decent. (7)gates: Yo you really left the gun and took the cannoli with this pick (8.2)shazam: i'm... not proud to say i haven't seen The Godfather so i unfortunately don't have context for this track. however, i definitely enjoyed this one! the genre blending here was really intriguing; modern classical/waltz/italian folk music doesn't sound cohesive in my head, but it all meshed together super cleanly here. this track shines in how slow it takes thing, gently bobbing along with the steady waltz beat. the traditional Italian instrumentation adds a really nice touch to the track that allows me to invision what the scene might look like where this track plays. there's not really a whole lot else really selling me on this track, though. it's pleasant enough, but it lacks something really ear-catching for me to give this too high of a score. (7.1)Overall Score: 31.6Detour Results:(The Trinity)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I always enjoy some Nirvana haha. I feel like this is one of their signature songs for a reason - the guitars are very strong and Kurt Cobain’s vocals are really cool also! (8.8)
Samo: Nirvana is a band I respect way more than I actually like, and this is no exception. There’s some great guitar work here, and the lyrics do an amazing job of describing his relationship with Courtney Love without being cliché, but the song is a lot to take in, so I don’t really see myself returning to it. (7.3)
Carrie: This one was a bit too boring for me--no, I'm no fun at all lol. I did pick up some nice lyrics such as "forever in debt to your priceless advice" but ultimately the song didn't feel like it went anywhere. It felt like a rinse-and-repeat of quiet verse, louder chorus, and it became too repetitive for my liking. (3)
Brian: Solid guitar riff to open. Kurt Cobain’s vocals aren’t the best, but they’re functional as he’s able to radiate intensity in the chorus. The post chorus guitar playing by Krist is strong. The lyrics are memorable. Good song. (8.3)
Overall Score: 27.2
unfortunately, neither of you could quite it against the competition this leg, and as we said the bottom 2 teams are done. so The Golden Ducks and Canadeam are no more
HOWEVER
we never said anyone was being eliminated, and that is still the case. instead, you four are just switching teams. your new teams are: willapted33 & matteeeb Web & lyhom both teams will face a Speed Bump next leg, but you're still in the race and still racing, even if it may be with a new partner
